YouTube Music Premium In-Depth Review: Did Google Finally Get it Right?

by birtanpublished on August 25, 2020

Hey friends this is Brandon here with Android police and now with the public launch of YouTube music premium we wanted to take a deep dive into it and find out how good is it for those who have it available sorry – those who don't have it available where they live

Yet anyways here's my review of YouTube music premium make sure you let everyone know what service you use by answering the poll up here and leaving a comment on why first for those who don't know Google Play music is being merged into

YouTube music premium unfortunately at the time of filming your library your playlists and music Locker has not transferred over to youtube music premium but supposedly that will be added later on this year only time will

Tell how true that is and if you already had Google Play Music you may know that there has been some confusion about pricing last a few questions and also through personal experience here's what's happening

You're being grandfathered into YouTube's premium so YouTube's premium is one step beyond YouTube music premium and includes add free youtube and original content so if you have any discounted plans or even a family plan

From google play music that's being grandfathered in but if you're signing up for YouTube music premium for the first time here are the plans so keep in mind that YouTube music premium is just the service to stream anything

Associated with music and music videos YouTube premium prices are different and that is YouTube music Premium Plus access to premium youtube features like add free youtube and excess original content for an advertising company

Google makes some really confusing advertising and branding choices they should just name it YouTube music and then YouTube premium simple so as far as I can tell you cannot purchase music on YouTube music premium so it's strictly a

Subscription-based streaming service unfortunately it's not public the exact number of tracks are available but on YouTube music premium you have access to original content remixes covers live performances etc oh and like a ton of

Video options beyond the single official music video with those videos you can cast it to a cast enabled device and watch it there or even cast the audio only in the app you can listen to the audio from videos only by switching the

Toggle button which makes way more sense if you want to passively listen to music rather than watch it you can even search for a song based on describing it or looking up the lyrics which is really cool that's the power of Google search

So when you look at the app it's divided into three different sections home HotList and library so when you look in the home page of the app you can tell that YouTube music premium is focusing on you finding new artists to listen to

You and that comes from suggestions that are given to you or playlists that have been curated for you as well and behind all that is the power of Google's search algorithms and machine learning this data comes from a variety of means

There's the little artist choose your adventure thing that is really fun where you click on different artists and it will suggest other artists that are similar and you just keep going and going down the rabbit trail the more you

Choose the better your service will be from the start thumbs up and down is important because it'll help with suggesting you better content and speaking of thumbs up you should give a thumbs up to this video huh oh and

Subscribe because you know YouTube subscribe also helps but it currently subscribes to the artists channel on your actual YouTube account apparently this is being worked on but right now subscribing may boost all your

Notifications and suggested videos on your main YouTube account since I have a sub account under my this is tected a channel this doesn't really affect me personally but if you don't have a sub account under your one email address

This may be a nuisance you can kind of get around this if you simply add the album that you want only to your library but you can't just add an artist it also analyzed how you use the app and how often you look at videos with that

They'll adjust the main homepage based upon your actual usage if you don't watch much video it'll move it lower on the home screen so you don't see it as often and vice-versa I think that's really cool you will also receive

Suggestions based on your location time and weather and that'll all be grouped based upon style mood and artists there's also an offline mixtape that YouTube curates and then updates every day if you want to you you can set up so

Your phone automatically downloads out to a certain number of songs every day and you can listen to it without a signal and of course you can turn this off on the second page you have HotList which is honestly just what music videos

Are hot new and trending right now on YouTube when I checked it only provided 19 videos on that page and one thing that I noticed while poking around was the option to enable stats for nerds and you can find out a lot of neat info

About that specific video streaming at that moment on the library page you'll see the last played downloads playlists albums like songs and artists playlists will include custom playlists that you create as well

As the playoffs that are already created that you add and albums are listed in the order that you add them you'll find that you're unable to add individual songs unless you search for it instead of adding a song to your library you

Like it kind of like adding a song to your library but way more confusing and less organized the only way to add it to your library is adding the whole album to your library like songs are arranged in the order that you liked it with the

Most recent showing up first and considering that the majority of consumers listen to you things based upon singles rather than entire albums this is a bit counterintuitive the artists section consists only of the

Artists that you have subscribed to you they're essentially forcing you to subscribe to an artists channel page in order to add the band name to your library from a consumer standpoint I kind of hate this but from an artists

Standpoint this is really great and part of the success of YouTube music premium is the satisfaction from the artists perspective so with all this how good is the sound quality for sound quality settings it's a bit hidden the labeling

Doesn't make it super easy to tell which one is the best but it seems like HD is the best option right now now when you add resolutions to these sound quality settings and you combine YouTube with all this the audio

File on me kind of gets a little scared so it may be hard to shake the stigma that the audio quality from the music on a video is quite poor because it is for the audiophile out there but when you're listening to the audio only not the

Video actually sounds pretty good and in my comparisons I thought it actually sounded better than Apple music but sound can be a bit subjective there's not much else that's there in terms of the sound quality like Spotify there's

No gapless playback there's no normalization there's no EQ and I really hope that they fix that soon the overall design of the app is nice I prefer the dark theme and the huge emphasis on photos looks really

Nice and I would say it's a great start it still needs a lot of the more advanced features from google play music like the music locker or features that Spotify has there is a native integration for google home devices that

Allows you to set YouTube music as your default music streaming service sure check out this price station on YouTube there isn't a podcast section however Google just released a Google branded

Podcast app so you could use that but I'm just going to call it right now that Google will release a podcast section in YouTube music premium and then we'll have the huge confusing Google strategy of releasing a bazillion apps that

Overlap and just currently there is a widget available like you would have with Google Play Music but if your experiences like mine with Google Play Music it was prone to lag a bit but I'd still like to have a widget speaking of

Lag I haven't experienced any so far so knock on wood as for the web browser app on your computer it is generally the same general layout or logic for navigation the benefit is how big the images are in the added backgrounds it

Just looks really nice just to know that there's no ability to adjust the audio quality on the web app oh and I really hope that they have a dedicated app for the desktop as a whole I think this is a really great start but it has a lot of

Room to catch up to something like Spotify and if you watch our last comparison video Spotify kind of came out on top but for me personally I prefer YouTube music premium because well I was grandfathered in from a seven

Dollar and 99 cent Google Play Music plan and I use a lot you tube so I like not seeing the ads but do you think YouTube music premium is a good fit for you go ahead and leave some comments don't forget to check out another

Android place video below and subscribe and if you'd like to check out my channel this is tech today click on the image of me in the middle thanks for watching Android please until next time
