Xiaomi Mi 9 SE review

by birtanpublished on October 4, 2020

Everyone when Xiaomi released the me9 it packed a bunch of flagship features in a flashy but affordable package however Xiaomi realized that not everybody needs a flagship phone so they also released a pocketable mid-range err the Xiaomi me 9 se this phone has a slightly smaller form factor a slightly smaller battery a slightly weaker chipset and you can get it for slightly less money but what does that mean in terms of the overall experience I'm Andrew for gsm arena and this is a review of the Xiaomi v9a see with the less than 6 inch screen the me 9 se is the most compact of shammies current

Nines and it passes for a compact phone nowadays it's incredibly comfortable and easy to use one-handed it's pretty much the only phone at this size that has three cameras and honestly I hope more manufacturers start releasing phones with this form factor again the SE is also unique in that it's one of the only phones to have a true triple camera setup at its price which definitely makes us stand out in the crowd however as far as looks the SE goes for elegance and minimalism over flashiness it has a simple reflective back but the phone doesn't feel or look cheap and it has a

Pleasing heft to it on a table it wobbles quite a bit and it quickly picks a finger prints but the situation improves if you put a case on it also that way the phone is kept safe although the Gorilla Glass 5 on the screen should allow it to survive most daily use cases anyway as far as biometrics are concerned there's an under display fingerprint reader that works quickly and reliably there's a really satisfying vibration every time you unlock it and you can change the unlock animations if you want to personalize it a bit face unlock is equally fast but not as secure

And you might need to change a region in order to get it to work on the front the bezels are slim and there's a small notch on the top you can leave it on constantly or allow them UI to hide it automatically but the autumn Oh doesn't always hide it when you're watching YouTube videos other than that the screen itself is a samsung made Super AMOLED and it's plenty good the full HD panel has a decent pixel density at 432 PPI and while its whites are way too cool when you start phone for the first time if you switch it to the warm preset or the standard

Mode the display becomes much more color accurate you can use it outdoors with no issue thanks to a great 615 it's of max brightness and it won't blind you at night because it drops to a good 2.2 minutes of brightness and complete darkness the phone has an IR blaster too which is a rarity these days and using the mirror mode app you can control TVs and other appliances another nice inclusion is a dual SIM tray which is very convenient for traveling unfortunately it's not one of those cards thoughts that has expandable storage so you're stuck with whatever

The phone comes with sadly it's also missing a headphone jack on the one hand these emissions make it seem more like a flagship on the other hand it's really nice not having to hunt for a dongle while we're on the topic of audio the loudspeaker is very loud and easily earned an excellent rating sound is rich and detailed but bass didn't have as much of a kick as we'd like still it's more than good enough for a smartphone with the 3000 70 million power battery the – you got a respectable but still mediocre 73 hours on our battery life tests the UI

Supports dark mode which might help you squeeze out a few extra minutes of battery but more importantly the SD supports a quick charge for plus you can charge the phone up to 47% in half an hour and up to 100% in an hour and a half performance wise the SE has plenty of power for daily use with the snapdragon 712 if you want a true step-up in the graphics department the regular me 9 is probably a better bet but naturally that comes with the step up in price to me 9sc runs Android Pi with me UI 10.2 you on top Mui updates typically are pretty timely so you

Shouldn't have a problem with future updates there are a few nice 24-hour live wallpapers and there's a limited selection of themes available if you don't like any of them you can get to the theme story he changed the region but it's a little irritating that so many features are region specific another little irritation is that Mew I has no app door if you install a third-party launcher you can get around this but once again it's a bit of a hassle once you get all these things set up however Mui is very comfortable to use gestures are some of the

Around especially the back gesture and the task switcher is nice when to get used to it of course you can always switch back to navigation buttons if you need them there's also a gaming mode that allows you to boost RAM take screenshots and record your gameplay the me 9 SC sports the same triple camera setup that you'll find on the Xiaomi me 90 there's an ultra wide camera a telephoto camera and a main 48 megapixel main shooter with an F 1.8 aperture in daylight the main camera does an excellent job when in the default 12 megapixel mode there's a lot of detail

Good color rendition and it has a natural look without excessive sharpening the dynamic range is nice and wide and it handles scenes with a lot of contrast quite well you can also take photos in the forty eight megapixel setting but quality wise you'd be better off with the 12 megapixel ones it produces when you switch to the ultra wide camera the dynamic range and sharpness are very good they don't quite measure up to what you'd get with the main shooter and sharpness noticeably degrades in the corners but these are still extremely detailed images for an

Ultra wide camera the telephoto camera on the other hand doesn't have a dynamic range that's quite as good as the other two it has slightly less contrasting images that have a slight haze in difficult light and slight purple fringes and brighter areas details are fine and there's some noise but that's to be expected considering how small the sensor is low-light images out of the main camera are good but not spectacular they're a little soft and there isn't a ton of detail in there even so we're liking the SC's regular night photos a little better than the

T's the se has a dedicated night mode that rescues even the darkest scenes there's a noticeable drop in sharpness and increase in noise but shadows are well-developed and highlights aren't overblown it's not the best night mode we've seen but it's respectable for mid-range err it also works on the telephoto camera and like on the main camera images have good exposure and colors regular low-light photos with a telephoto on the other hand simply aren't that good highlights are overblown shadows or darkened detail is low sadly there's no

Knight mode from the ultra wide camera and its output in darker scenes is also far from stellar unlike a lot of phones the se uses the telephoto camera to take portraits and uses the main camera for depth detection in good light there's some pretty nice flow bokeh although we still recommend taking a couple of shots for best results the 20 megapixel shooter on the me 9sc seems to be the same selfie camera as the one on the me 9 selfies come out with good detail and nice colors but they look a tad over processed and have a little too much sharpening when you

Look at them up close the selfie cam also struggles a little at dynamic range but nothing out of the ordinary for a front camera 4k videos out of the main cam are nice and detailed and have likable colors dynamic range is excellent too the only complete we had was how bad the video stabilization was at this resolution if you zoom out with the ultra wide camera it becomes pretty clear that the SC handles ultra wide videos a little better than the 90 colors are more natural and an emic range is better 1080p footage from the main camera is also quite good aside

From the drop and resolution they pretty much look the same as for Q videos stabilization on the other hand is much better and actually noticeable so the me 9 se is a really solid phone it has an excellent display good battery life despite the size and a good camera setup now if you're willing to sacrifice the form factor or the triple camera setup then you're gonna have a couple more options to choose from for example you're gonna have the galaxy a 50 which has a bigger battery the other option that I can think of straight off the bat is the Google pixel 3/8 which is a

Mid-range err it was one of the best cameras around like even on a flagship now if you're not willing to sacrifice either the form factor or the three cameras the Shamim e9 se stands alone and it's a really good phone so I recommend it thanks for watching if you enjoyed this video hit the like button down below subscribe at the bell icon and I'll see you next time
