Verizon’s Super Bowl LIV Demo Made Me A 5G Believer

by birtanpublished on February 10, 2021

Verizon just told me it spent eighty million dollars putting 5g into the Hard Rock stadium hotels throughout Miami even here at this amazing little setup they got going on here so what does that even mean like do I get to stream Netflix a little bit faster oh no it's way way bigger than that I'm Caleb Denison for Digital Trends and finally I've got a handle on just what 5g is gonna be bringing to the fan experience at the Superbowl and to customers all over the place in general Verizon is amped about 5g but all the hype has been lost on me that is until today Verizon showed me a demonstration

That got me legitimately excited but before I show you what changed my mind let's back up why am I here well when Verizon learned the Super Bowl was coming to Miami it got here quick I think our network team has watch parties when they announced the Super Bowl location you know a number of years out because you know they know that if it's coming to their neck of the woods that you know they got to start planning that's Nikki palmer and she and her team are in the business of thinking ahead the Super Bowl 54 still a couple of years out they set up a command center

And started laying down fibre so that they could blanket key sections of Miami in 5g that includes many hotels key tourist spots and of course the Hard Rock Stadium where almost every square inch the parking lot the stands all of it is covered with 5gf we spent over 80 million dollars in Miami and that doesn't just go into the stadium but it does go into the stadium we've outfitted it with 4G capacity 5g capacity Wi-Fi capacity I think it's over 1,500 antenna nodes throughout the stadium then you go out into you know the the parking areas that that need to be cared for in the

Greater Miami area the rumors you may have heard about partial stadium coverage wrong it's covered and it better be all told Verizon spent 80 million dollars on this project so it makes sense that it would set up this Super Bowl live experience centre in Bayfront Park to show Superbowl fans what's possible during the big game inside I saw how 5g can support facial recognition used for security purposes what's different here is that these terminals have no pewter spilt in and that's really what's crazy about 5g it's so fast you don't

Need a computer on location anymore it can be set up in some data center and do all the work remotely but it's all instantaneous this could revolutionize stadium experiences no ticket required just walk on it but what can we as consumers use 5g for and how does that play into the Superbowl our fans have this crazy appetite for all things in FL and so what it means for them is quicker access you know abilities when you're in the stadium to really connect to those experiences from going to retail go into concessions parking let me show you what she's talking about in this

Demonstration we're in a simulated stadium pick up the 5g phone point it at the action and you can interact with the stadium and the game I can see where restrooms are and what the wait time is see where the food I want is and what the wait times are there and I can see where I parked and get directions to get there and the interaction with the game it's nuts point the phone at a player and get real-time stats see the quarterbacks playbook and instant replays are transformed you're in control and you can see it from any angle in real time 3d how cool is that

Then there's the way 5g is changing mobile gaming and eSports one of the things that we need to think about in terms of quality and production is the graphics because of the speed because of the low latency we'll be able to deliver graphics and a graphics engine in 3d console style gaming to a mobile device which we know is incredibly accessible in ways that we have not been able to do before the other thing that we need to think about is the computation and the data everything that needs to happen behind the scenes so that the game can happen

In real time in a way that only 5g can deliver it goes back to that off-site computing or edge computing that we saw with the facial recognition tech all the processing happens somewhere else so you can get top-tier graphics and gaming experiences with no lag on a mobile device where gaming will go from here is well I think it's going to be amazing so now I get it 5g is about high speed but it's what that high speed can do for us that matters Verizon's 5g done right philosophy is based on that notion it's just gonna have to get real busy

Blanketing the US five G to make it work hey everybody thanks for watching are you a little bit more excited about 5g now that you've seen what it can actually do leave me a comment down below like subscribe hit that notification bell and as always watch digital trends calm for the latest tech news and reviews
