Using the first iPad… 10 years later

by birtanpublished on December 6, 2020

Apple's iPad is heavily regarded as the best innovation from the 2010s and for a good reason the impact it's made cannot be understated and although it was Steve Jobs his last main innovation I think most of us would agree it was also one of his best hey how's it going I'm Josh from 91 tech and this is the Apple iPad how does it hold up nearly 10 years later the first iPad was announced in the January of 2010 and officially released that April 3rd it was replaced the following year by the iPad 2 it might surprise you that despite this being one

Of the if not the greatest innovation of the 2010s it actually is one of the worst iPads at least in terms of longevity and support the iPad 2 was an absolutely massive upgrade over at being slimmer and having cameras on the front and back it also had a dual-core processor double the RAM it was a lot better and beyond that this iPad was left in the dust when it comes to updates in late 2012 whereas the iPad 2 got all the way until late 2016 that's four extra years for a device one year newer now I'm not saying the first iPad was bad because it really wasn't it

Essentially created a market that didn't exist before at least not in the form that it did after the iPad tablets were thing before the iPad but they were super limited clunky and often required styluses the iPad completely changed that it was essentially just a big iPhone and that was awesome after this Android tablet started spawning like nobody's business but now that we've had about ten years of iPads I think it's pretty safe to say Apple ended up winning the war at this point most tech reviewers would agree there really aren't tablets worth of buying

Beyond iPad and Apple has an iPad at every single price point from the cheap iPad 7th generation to the iPad air 3 through the top-of-the-line iPad pro it's pretty fair to argue that we wouldn't be where we are now without the first iPad the first iPad was limited but it was actually forward-thinking in various ways the first and possibly most obvious for this one being cellular this iPad is capable of using 3G networks and has a sim tray you could buy the first iPad with or without this feature and it's one that made a lot of sense maybe you used your iPad to type reports and

Being able to use cellular networks especially in 2010 when free public Wi-Fi wasn't super widely available was a really useful feature there were some decent apps brought to the iPad from the iWork suite that were essentially watered-down versions of their Mac os10 counterparts you had Pages Numbers keynote these are apps that are still being improved on both Mac and iPad and they were there all the way back on the first I pad each F did cost ten bucks back then and Apple has since made them free for both Mac and iOS the iPad was kind

Of an interesting spot when originally came out because there wasn't a ton of productivity apps yet although I guess the iWork suite was there and so for most people I think it served more as entertainment lots of games came out like here my brother is playing air hockey which was already on the iPad when I got it these types of games were really cool back in 2010 because you could actually interact with the screen this was a whole new wave of gaming and of course everyone knows how mobile gaming went from there 2010 was interesting because

IPads didn't have a ton of purpose yet but everybody wanted one because it was so cool again it was mentioned that this market didn't really exist before and that's what Steve Jobs is really good at he would find something that he knew people would want and then he would make it that's what the iPad was obviously right now we're more talking about the history of the iPad but I think it's important to know exactly what went into this and how it performs back in 2010 to completely understand how it holds up now plus I just find its history interesting something you may or may not

Find interesting is that the iPad actually shipped with iPhone OS 3.2 you heard me iPhone OS iPhone OS is what Apple used to call their software before iOS 4 and the iPad had it before eventually being updated to iOS 4 and then it would go to iowa's 5 and then iOS 5.1.1 and then never further again it's the least supported iPad Apple's ever launched but in all fairness it feels pretty fast and that's nice to see often Apple will support devices for too long like the iPad 2 leaving it feels slow and sluggish on its final version of iOS but

Let's back up here and talk about the design of the iPad Apple often will use the same design across multiple generations of iPad the iPad 2 2 4 looks the same heck the iPad air from 2013 is pretty close to the iPad hair from 2019 except for slimmer bezels that being said the iPad 1 is unique and that no other iPad has the same general form factor it's a lot more square than newer iPads except for maybe the newest Pro but it does have a curved back this does make it pretty chunky feeling although the weight isn't as bad as you might expect for perspective the 2018 iPad pro

Twelve point nine inch meaning the biggest one weighs 631 grams the first iPad cellular model which is what I have weighs in at 730 grams so while it is heavier and decently heavier at that I would say it's more than usable of course we have no camera on the back here and we don't have one on the front either the iPad 2 was the first one with a camera so if you wanted to take blurry probably cringe-worthy selfies back in 2010 you'd be fresh out of luck the black plastic here shows that this is a cellular iPad and has 3G network capabilities the plastic covers up the

Antennas and whatnot as all that cannot connect through solid aluminum cellular iPads still have something like this but they're a lot better at hiding it now so you may not have ever noticed moving to the sides of the device we have the power button and headphone jack at the top on one side we have volume buttons and the mute switch and on the other side we have the sim tray on the bottom there's the old 30 pin charging port and speakers you can see this iPad is 32 gigabytes and that's actually a still a pretty reasonable amount of space heck Apple's cheapest iPad still starts with

32 gigabytes the first iPad came with 16 32 or 64 gigabytes I would say that aspects is actually aged pretty well you wouldn't want 16 gigabytes anymore but for a 10 year old iPad that would be probably fine finally we can move to the front of the iPad and it looks like an iPad iPads haven't changed a whole lot from this design the bezels have slimmed down but the newest iPad air still has the home button and looks kind of similar of course the 2018 iPad pro finally changed this and dropped the home button altogether but still from the front the 2010 iPad actually doesn't

Look too old at least until you turn it on and it tells you to slide to unlock the display is nine point seven inches and it has a resolution of 1024 by 768 which is good for a pixel density of 132 pixels per inch it's non retina and you can see pixels it's definitely not ideal in terms of quality however because it is bigger than an iPhone I would say the lesser quality is not as noticeable as on say an iPhone 3GS but it's still pretty obvious and the iPad 3 and newer were huge improvements in this department the general size

Though at nine point seven inches feels pretty good definitely antiquated next to my iPad air 3 but absolutely usable if it weren't for the fact that this iPad was stuck on Iowa's five would probably make a good streaming device particularly for a kid or something that's actually what my family uses our iPad to for my three-year-old brother will often use it to watch shows off of Netflix or Amazon Prime or whatever unfortunately Disney Plus requires iOS 11 so the iPad 2 can't run that but there's still a use for it so I want to ask a question are there still any apps

You can use on iOS 5 is there any use for this iPad we can come up with well first let's briefly go over the hardware we're working with the iPad has the same chipset as the iPhone 4 with the a4 processor you might be wondering why then the iPhone 4 got till iOS 7 while the iPad was stuck on iOS 5 and the simple reason is that the iPad also had half the RAM but 256 megabytes I don't know why they didn't just stick more RAM in here because they were planning to with the iPhone 4 but regardless it was a good thing Apple kept it back when I was 5 because it still runs iOS 5 pretty

Well the problem with iOS 5 is app compatibility doing basic UI things like swiping around or going through settings or opening apps feels pretty smooth it's not running at a buttery 120 Hertz like the newest iPad pros but considering it's about 10 years old it does seem to run amazingly well I am quite impressed with how its held up and it definitely would not have felt this good if it went further than iOS 5 however again the problem with iOS 5 is app compatibility you might notice there's a YouTube app on this iPad and that's because iOS actually used to have YouTube built in

Before iOS 6 eventually Google moved it to the App Store and made it so the old YouTube app wouldn't work anymore so that's where we are now there are runarounds for this and I'll get to that in a bit let's start with some basic web browsing I opened up Google into my partial surprise it actually came on pretty quickly I searched myself up and there I am considering how little RAM this device has this actually isn't too bad generally I wouldn't want to use this for web browsing but I'm impressed it seems to at least function decently

I'd say most computers from 10 years ago probably can barely handle Google so yeah I think the iPad holds its own the App Store is slow but totally usable typically you can download old come Hannibal versions of apps by finding them in past purchases and so of course I first went for YouTube and I couldn't install it because apparently it's incompatible so that's unfortunate and I tried another app which was also incompatible now this was odd and at first I was wondering if Apple just didn't allow downloading old versions of apps anymore but after some searching on

Our slash Legacy jailbreak I found a fix it's a tweak called checkmate store and so to use this we will need to jailbreak so let's do that I expected to jailbreak it in this video but I was hoping I could at least do something without jailbreaking but considering we can't download like any apps yet we need to jailbreak I would say if you're trying to use pretty much any older iOS device you really should jailbreak there are too many weird incompatibilities and quirks of old iOS really not too I think but luckily for us jailbreaking is insanely easy with iOS 5.1.1 all we need

Is some absinthe not that absinthe this absinthe it's a simple application that should jailbreak the iPad for us all I have to do is plug in the iPad open the program click jailbreak and bam soon enough the iPad was jailbroken just like that this is an insanely easy process so if you have an old iPad I'd highly recommend you do it why not right next up we need to download the checkmate store tweak that allows us to download old versions of apps I added the repo to Cydia which is Cydia dot in voxi Play games UK or something like that and installed the source and then I went

Through the tweaks and found two checkmate store I installed it went to the App Store went to YouTube and sure enough it would let me download a latest compatible version this is what you like to see after doing this I opened YouTube and it didn't work so this was all kind of pointless I don't know why it's not working but that's fine because I want to use the old YouTube app anyway so I went back to the same repo and downloaded a tweak called – fixer that should make the old YouTube app work so I installed that and tried opening old YouTube and sure enough it opened and

Loaded in the trending videos only problem I can't seem to do anything else and won't let me search for videos and won't let me really do anything I was able to play a video off but that was about as much as I could do for now I'm just gonna leave it be next I wanted to download netflix because hey maybe we could at least turn this into a streaming machine to my partial surprise not only did it download it actually works really well after I signed in if you absolutely had to you could use this iPad as a Netflix machine I don't know why you'd want to especially with much

Cheaper options being out there but you can then with jailbreaking there's a lot of fun stuff we could do I downloaded barrel for fun because I just love barrel gives you some funny transitions as you swipe around the UI and there's lots of things you could do with this thing just for fun but practically speaking there's not a whole lot this iPad is good for yeah it's really cool to have and to play around with but beyond that it can't run basically any apps anymore and it's kind of pointless to try to use it especially when Apple's selling an iPad for $329 second run iOS

13 and do anything that's an insane deal and it's really cool to see that iPads have become so potentially budget oriented as well as having high-end products – I like that Apple has a range now that's something they never used to have it was the new iPad every year and then that was it of course the only problem right now is that Apple doesn't really have competition for iPads and so that could cause complacency in the future but at the moment they are definitely top of the line and only seem to be getting better so no complaints and it's kind of cool to see where it

All came from is the first iPad still usable in 2020 no it's not is it obsolete yes it is there's really not a lot you can do with it it's fun to play around with but basically nothing beyond that this is one of the coolest if not the coolest products from the 2010s and I'm really curious to see what happens in the 2020s and with that I think I'm pretty much done here thank you so much for watching if you found this video interesting maybe hit that like button and consider subscribing for more content just like this did you ever have

The first iPad let me know in the comments down below you want your mind to be blown there are probably people watching this video who were born after this iPad came out that's weird and insane but it's how the world works so it's kind of crazy if you want to follow me on Twitter and Instagram at ninety one underscore tech you definitely should I don't know why you want to but you should and you can always join the community discord a link in the description below thanks again for watching i'm josh from ninety one tech and i will see you all next day
