Top 10 New Things In Android N Developer Preview 2

by birtanpublished on November 24, 2020

What's up guys mark burr Steiner here with android police and Android in preview to has been out for a little while now so I thought we would do a quick revisit and see exactly everything that's changed and basically what's going to be available on Android n when it finally hits our devices google has actually changed the emojis this time around the old blob emojis are replaced with some more human-like manifestations of emojis these are also Unicode 9 compatible which is a really big deal this is the very first time that Android is ahead of iOS in terms of Unicode compatibility which is a pretty cool

Feeling developers need to include them in their keyboards and messaging applications now that something Google hasn't done yet themselves but it's still early days another half-baked change is launcher shortcuts these things are intended to bring us a new way of interacting with our home screens and it gives us the ability to expose information quick actions shortcuts to various parts of the app just from the starting point of an icon since we actually have been able to see this out in the wild we're not exactly sure what Google's going to implement this with or

How really but nova launcher and other third-party launches are able to implement them through the use of gestures which some of us are speculating might lead to an Android implementation of some sort of a 3d touch now these next few features are actually completely usable in preview to let's start with the quick reply now this was actually available in the original preview and hangouts has been supporting it for quite some time now but now you can use the quick reply from the notification shade on the lock screen it's not visible first you got to

Actually pull down the notification be able to do it just like you do in the notification pain but you get that quick reply right from the lock screen it's a really really helpful if you are worried about security don't be you can actually turn that off as well right in the settings just uncheck that box no big deal if you're into really useful stuff quick settings now has a calculator tile which acts is basically just a little app shortcut it would have been nice to see a little mini calculator actually in the notification pain but hey beggars can't be choosers this next one's a

Little bit more controversial there is a clear apps button in the recent apps list now and yes I know that's not ideal but at the very least Google did us a favor and made sure that you had to scroll all the way to the top the list to push it which to me tells me that it's not quite so much about clearing the RAM as it is for the people who can't handle that amount of cognitive load for example my wife just prefers to have a few recent apps on that screen and clearing the apps helps her feel a little bit more in control of her device the system UI tuner is also

Getting a little bit of a shakedown there's a lot of new stuff that Google is throwing in here for Androids very experimental so in the first preview we got five different importance levels for our notifications in this one we've actually got six new ones and the big one that's changed is the sixth one of urgent importance which will show at the top of the notifications list and it'll peek onto the screen and it'll allow sound in preview one the dialogue experience actually changed as well they don't show up in dead center anymore they anchor to the point that you

Touched which is part of material design in preview to this is actually gone a little bit even further and it actually pulls the color or at least a small theme from the app that created the dialogue to theme the actual fly out it's really really nice and it adds this really great feeling of consistency fast app switching also got a little bit of a change in the first preview you could hit your recents button and you can hit it multiple times to cycle through your recent apps sort of like all tab but in the new preview preview to the behavior is actually switched so it only goes

Between the two most recent tabs basically it's the difference between holding alt and hitting tab more than once and hitting alt tab and then letting go and for the last two there are actually some changes to Google's own apps in android end as well Google now launcher now has an option finally to set your lock screen and home screen wallpapers differently OEM skins have had this for a long long time but for some reasons is just one of those oversights that never made it into stock Google stuff so it's really nice to see this here they also went so far as to

Add an app info button to the bottom of the screen regardless of whether or not in icons been grabbed from the home screen or the app drawer I use it all the time very helpful big ups Google thank you lastly but certainly not least ly the camera app has also been tweaked these changes were introduced with the second Developer Preview but the the APK will actually run on any marshmallow device perfectly fine you can actually now take photos while shooting video once again thank goodness for that all you parents out there slow motion is now its own separate pull out

Menu item rather than just being a button in the video mode there's a new shutter button there's a new icon for the front rear camera switching button and of course the long-awaited return of tiny planet mode that's all the new stuff you guys need to know about in android end developer preview too i want to remind you this is indeed a Developer Preview so don't go installing it on your daily driver device if you really want to see what's going on in Android you're going to need to find another one to install it on because it's not quite stable enough to use as your daily

Driver let me know what you guys are interested in seeing in Android and which of these changes are you stoked about which ones do you hope they roll back I know that clear apps button is going to be a little bit contentious for you guys so thank you guys so so much for watching as always be kind to one another and I'll catch in the next video
