The Death of the iPhone 7

by birtanpublished on March 22, 2021

Like the iPhone 10s and 10's max the iPhone 7 and 7 plus are no longer being sold by Apple and have been officially discontinued may they rest in peace hey how's it going I'm Josh from 91 SEC and today we're talking about the life and death of the iPhone 7 and 7 plus perhaps I'm being a bit overdramatic here the iPhone 7 will get at least another couple years of software support and honestly is still a really solid phone but Apple is no longer selling them despite selling them for the last three years since late 2016 it has only been around for three years but in that

Time the iPhone lineup has changed so much and the iPhone 7 was kind of the last big iPhone launch before that change happened the year after the iPhone 10 came out and I think it's safe to say the smart phone landscape completely changed after that not only for Apple but for everyone but the iPhone 7 and 7 plus weren't really small upgrades even if they appeared to be on the surface not only did we get different colors some technical spec improvements and some minor changes like the capacitive home button but we also got Apple's first telephoto lens on the

7 Plus this is the first time an iPhone had had dual cameras and it was majorly beneficial for two reasons first was to time zoom with little to no dropping quality and the second was for portrait photos portrait photos were first introduced with the 7 plus and it was actually one of the first phones to do it with companies like Google soon doing it as well afterwards is quite impressive because it was able to give that bokeh effect that previously was only possible with like actual cameras not some small slab of glass and aluminum that could fit in your pocket

Mind you this one actually can't take portrait photos because it's just the regular 7 but you get the idea but let's back up here because unfortunately the iPhone 7 is known for something slightly more infamous than the dual camera and sadly I feel like this might spoil any legacy the iPhone 7 might have had with the release of the iPhone 7 Apple made the courageous decision to remove the headphone jack to say this was an unpopular move would be like a massive massive massive understatement and both the Internet's and general masses were outraged there were riots in

The streets it was the end of the world not really but people were mad but to Apple's credit they owned up to it they weren't afraid to admit that they were getting rid of the headphone jack and even talked about it in their keynote and that's why I out of all the companies that have finally removed the headphone jack I do have the most respect for Apple Google made fun of Apple that year and then the next year with the pixel – got rid of the headphone jack and yeah they didn't even talk about it and their conference Samsung

Has finally took him out the headphone jack in the no 10 and again no mention of it in their conference Apple made it a literal talking point and again I think they deserve some respect for that if you're gonna do something that's massively unpopular you might as well own it for all the unnecessary and dumb things Apple seems to do they generally don't try to hide it so there's that but yeah the iPhone 7 was the beginning of the end for the headphone jack if you really want one nowadays you could turn to LG and that's about it really no flagships have headphone jacks anymore

Which is sad that said you can't completely blame the iPhone 7 for this shift there was at least some reasoning for it better water resistance for one as well as a slightly bigger battery it also just left more room in general for designers to work with and that's always a good thing even if you would give up all that to get your headphone jack back I feel like it was kind of an inevitable sacrifice and I think Apple knew what they were doing when they took the headphone jack out of the iPhone 7 Apple mostly said the reasoning was bigger battery and water resistance if I

Remember correctly but let's be real that's not why the headphone jack was removed it was removed for a couple of reasons first air pod sales air buds are awesome they're great don't get me wrong I love my air pods but Apple did want to sell them and how do you sell them it get rid of the headphone jack and people want you know something to make up for it and wireless headphones or earbuds I guess in this case we're a good option so that's reason number one better sales for air pods and the second was to avoid controversy when the iPhone 10 would eventually come out Apple knew getting

Rid of the headphone jack was going to be a big deal and they probably wanted to avoid all that heat when it came to their biggest upgrades to the iPhone line since like the iPhone 4 I think this was kind of a brilliant move on Apple's part actually they knew the media would freak out something they'd be very eager to avoid for the phone that would set their design trends for at least the next few years you don't want the media talking about how you have no headphone jack you want them talking about how you have almost no bezels Apple might have removed the jack

About a year earlier than they had to but it's easy to understand why that doesn't mean you have to like it I don't like it but I do understand why and luckily it's been a few years since then and we're all used to no headphone jack at this point so we can look at the iPhone 7 a little bit more objectively first that jet black color is one of the most unique colors Apple has ever done it's a glossy finish and it's just completely black we haven't had really anything like it since I mean Space Gray is cool but it's just that great the matte black was also

Amazing it was actually black the aluminum gave Apple a little bit more freedom with the coloring which is why we have so many colors with this phone while the iPhone 7 was similar to the iPhone 6 and 6s and looks it was a much more refined design without those annoying antenna bands going across the back instead they went across the edges and it just looked a lot better especially in those darker colors I brushed over the home button earlier but it's actually quite impressive it was capacitive which means that it doesn't actually physically push in

Instead it mimics a click whenever it feels pressure and it vibrates so that you feel like you're clicking it this was a great improvement not only does clicking the home button register faster than it used to but less moving parts means less breakable parts and that's always a great thing there's a lot I could talk about with the iPhone 7 and maybe at some point I'll do a video on how underrated it was like almost painfully underrated I think it was a really solid transitional phone a placeholder for the huge change that was the iPhone 10 and that's okay because

The iPhone 7 and 7 plus really solid phones and they didn't look at a place in 2016 they weren't behind the times or anything the Galaxy s8 produced a lot of excitement in early 2017 only a little bit after the iPhone 7 came out because it had like no bezels and was really nice-looking but I think the iPhone 10 was really the one that changed the market for good when it came out I mean if you don't believe me look at phones in 2017 versus ones in 2018 you might see that some are at least a notch above all the others okay that sounded a lot more funny in my head but yeah there

Were a lot of notches in 2018 it was pretty ridiculous but anyways I've always liked the iPhone 7 and 7 plus and although they were never my main phone if you have one right now I think that they are definitely worth keeping for at least another year or maybe two they're really solid right now there's really no point of upgrading if you don't need to or you don't really want to too much don't worry about it there's still yeah there's still really good phones if you are interested in upgrading because you want a better camera or just something new the iPhone

11 is what I'd recommend because it's only six hundred ninety-nine dollars and it has almost all the new features of the iPhone 11 Pro but with that I'm pretty much done here the iPhone 7 and 7 plus had a good life and although the headphone jack is what this going to be most remembered I think they did some other stuff pretty well too anyways do you have an iPhone 7 what do you think about the headphone jack do you think Apple made the right choice and removing it a year before the iPhone 10 or do you think they should have just waited till the iPhone 10 to remove it let me know
