The Cheapest Apple Silicon MacBook Pro?!

by birtanpublished on October 4, 2020

The new macbooks featuring apple's own silicon are right around the corner i'm hoping that sometime in october we'll get an announcement bringing all of our wildest dreams like everything that we want of better battery life less heat more power slimmer bezels the list just there's so many things that i want to see over the next couple of months but what do i think will be on tap for the cheapest macbook pro when it comes out let's find out this isn't the cheapest apple silicon macbook pro by the way what's up everyone i'm the everyday dad and if i can figure it out you can

Figure it out dang i'm really starting to get wrapped up in the excitement of the new macbooks i'm a gigantic fan of both the ipad pro and the macbook pro 13. and seeing the two just kind of like smush together to make a macbook is something that i am looking forward to seeing that today let's talk about what i think will be the cheapest macbook pro i think it will be a macbook pro 13 by the way what features might it have and where do i think the price point will start so obviously like i just said i

Do think there's a good chance that the macbook pro 13 will be one of the if not the first max announced and released with the new apple chipset inside of it i mean think about it the macbook pro 13 has always been kind of the standard gateway mac this is what most people cut their teeth on entering the apple ecosystem heck it's what both my wife and i have cut our teeth on getting into max and following that train of logic it would be a good first impression to bring

Not only new consumers into the apple ecosystem but also us curmudgeons with our intel macbooks bring us into the apple silicon ecosystem look us apple fans can be crazy about what we use i'm comfortable with this stuff man but on the spectrum of like scary max to least scary max the macbook pro 13 is hands down the least threatening and will be the best budgetist definitely not a word of all the options that apple could release the 13-inch pro has power on hand but is generally small

Enough to fit anywhere and cheap enough well cheap enough as far as apple goes to get more of them into the market to evangelize the new processors and get a buzz going before the heavier hitting 16 and potentially 14 inch models come out next year as i was writing the script and as i'm talking about this now i'm getting more and more convinced of myself please please be right we'll come back after the announcement of the first apple silicon and see whether i was close or not so leave

If this is if you're watching this after that announcement leave a comment below was i right fingers crossed so what would this theoretical macbook be able to do well i imagine physically there won't be much of a difference between it and the current macbook pro 13. that means we'll still get a very small portable machine though i'm not sure of what that means for the port selection currently we have a two-tier structure on the macbook pro 13 one with an older set of intel 8th

Generation processors and the other with the newer 10th generation processors why this matters for the ports on hand is the lower end model which is what i have it only has two thunderbolt 3 ports while the higher end model has four it has two on each side this sounds like a simple well let's just go over the four port option then decision we're done done decision made the problem is the more you add to a piece of hardware the more expensive it gets that four port body

Also has an improved thermal system leading to the cost of the overall computer going up but one of the potential apple silicon benefits is much much better heat performance so we might not actually need that extra power in the cooling system all that to say i don't know if apple would keep the two-tier system anymore unless they have multiple power options available like an a12z family of chips at the lower end and the newer a13 line in the higher end maybe not those specific chipsets but

Like that kind of jump in power that would be where i could see the difference in the body but we kind of glossed over a potential big issue that could fundamentally change how macbooks are used and marketed thunderbolt 3 is a hybrid apple intel technology that works on and with intel processors yes there are now currently workarounds for certain amd motherboards to buy a pcie expansion slot if your board supports titan ridge but that's like cutting edge amd stuff right now and when it comes to apple i just

Want to say is your current ipad pro thunderbolt 3 or usbc spoilers it's straight usbc this has potentially huge ramifications on how we interact with a macbook one of the if not the biggest selling point for the macbook pro 13 as it stands today is the versatility of going from laptop travel mode to full desktop mode with monitor keyboard wired ethernet external gpu power all sorts of connections and all

Of that happens through one of these two ports on today's current cheapest macbook pro but if we don't have thunderbolt some of that versatility is at risk now it's not all doom and gloom because if you do look at some of the current dongles on the market for the ipad pro there are options out there that do things like hdmi out power sd card there is similar functionality out there for the ipad apple did state in their initial announcement of apple silicon back in july

That they would continue to support thunderbolt 3. so gary why all the rigmarole of the previous few paragraphs why scare us all like that well this is one of the places that i could potentially see growing pains and early compatibility problems here's hoping here's hoping that it all works as well as it does today but as an early adopter some of the problems you might have could be in the thunderbolt connection or you know crazy idea i'm just going to throw this crazy idea out here maybe we could bring

Some more io back to the laptop maybe an sd card slot an hdmi port maybe no no okay probably no performance is a place where we could see some very serious gains for a few specific reasons one in the most obvious apple chips are powerful like crazy powerful things again i cite the current ipad pro for a demonstration of what apple is capable of my 11 inch is way smaller doesn't have a fan and perform some tasks at double the speed of this macbook

The a12 z processor is already an 8 core 2.4 gigahertz processor as opposed to even the most powerful 2.3 gigahertz 4 core i7 inside of the spec out macbook pro 13. not this one that's a significant amount of power difference especially if like me you spend most of your time doing work that benefits from multiple cores like video editing plus apple silicon as a system of chips they aren't exactly just like one solid processor doing all of the work all of the time

Those chips already have some pretty significant graphics processing capabilities built into it right i mean i've made several videos showing my shock face like this is my shock face showing what you can do with the ipad for video editing right a 799 tablet that renders and processes video faster than an imac pro that's the power of apple silicon so while i don't expect the cheapest macbook to have a dedicated graphics card like an amd

Or even though i would love it an nvidia card i don't think we'll miss that nearly as much even the current base model intel holds its own against much more expensive laptops thanks to the t2 security chip inside of it and spoilers that t2 chip is an apple silicon chip and and here's the big part where i think we'll gain the most amount of performance but before we get to it i want to pose you a slightly cheeky question why does the higher end macbook pro 13 have a bigger cooling system because it needs it the biggest hurdle

In designing laptops is managing the heat coming off of the processor and the gpu if you have one intel chips run hot the more cores the more clock speed you put in the hotter it gets so if you have a 10th generation quad-core i7 you will have to move more heat away from the sensitive parts of the system than the smaller less powerful intel processors and as some have seen there is a problem with thermal throttling on the higher

End macbook pro 13s that i7 is a beast for performance but it's also a beast for heat it's like a fire beast like a fireball like a core hound i play world of warcraft a little bit but we've already talked about that the a12z is an eight core processor living inside my 11 inch ipad that has practically no cooling system to speak of maybe that big metal back could be considered a heatsink but my ipad spends most of its life attached to the magic keyboard so

That is kind of negated and i've never had a heat problem the thing doesn't have a fan or cooling system and it doesn't overheat that's where this is where apple silicon gets really exciting not just from a what can apple do software and user experience wise and it could be so game changing from a apple is about to potentially fix problems that laptops have had since they've been since their inception since the laptop has been invented apple could be getting ready to fix a

Significant issue thermal performance might not be the most exciting thing to talk about it's not as flashy's new processors rgb ram or even fancy displays of bezels or anything like that but it's the it's absolutely the most important thing to consider in a laptop period if your laptop isn't properly managed thermally you will not get the performance you pay for if you put the highest end intel i9 or the ryzen 48 series of processor inside of it if it

Overheats it's not going to work well look at the macbook pro 15 like the last version of the macbook pro 15 that had overheating problems it had the i9 in it and another potentially gigantic benefit from moving over to apple's own chips is saving battery life i routinely use my ipad yes yes to your question that you're asking me i have to keep comparing it to the ipad because it's the only real world example that gets as close to what one of these

Macbooks might do i can use that ipad for a full day's worth of work with plenty of battery life left over but i'll also forget about it for a day at a time and come back to almost no battery life lost i'm most i think the conservation potential of the new macbooks is more exciting than the how long the battery lasts like potential the biggest frustration i have now with laptops not just the macbook all laptops is if you don't use it for a

Day or so and you haven't kept it plugged in that whole time you come back to it it's probably dead and a laptop without any power kind of not very useful these apple chips could solve that frustration for me and i don't know about you but i like it when my life has less frustrations okay that's all the potential macbook pros get it because instead of cons how does this really spell out for the cheapest macbook pro 13. here's what i here's what gary today

Would want to see out of the first lowest end apple silicon macbook pro 13. first off if most price speculation comes true it looks like we could see as much as a hundred dollars off the current base price point due to the lower cost of apple chips as opposed to intel chips so let's say the base model will come in at 11.99 instead of the current 12.99 i think we'll keep a lot of the current options eight gigabytes of ram 256 gigabytes solid state drive no dedicated graphics but again probably

Not that big of a deal i think options wise it's not going to be that much different as opposed to the processor we'll keep the same body with the two thunderbolt 3 ports the magic keyboard current retina display and i think i think we'll keep the lower end model's thermal system because like we said apple chips do not need that kind of fan support because they don't generate the heat that intel and even amd processors do man an amd ryzen macbook would be this could save us all sorts of space inside of the body could give us

Longevity of components and it's just overall a fantastic thing i cannot over stress heat is the literal worst thing for your laptop so for a hundred dollars less we could have a far more powerful piece of machinery on our hands now software side of the house with big sur that's something we'll have to talk about in the later date but for hardware oh i am so excited for the hardware but what do you think are you excited for the new macbooks what are your predictions for the future of these small

Powerful systems leave a comment below let's talk about it and if you liked this video but need a laptop today you don't have time to wait and you are curious about the current cheapest macbook pro 13 here is a whole playlist i have a whole playlist that you can click on that will give you my thoughts on the current cheapest macbook pro click right here click click click click click click click thanks for watching
