The BEST Sony A6600 Tips and Tricks!

by birtanpublished on January 12, 2021

The a 6600 is a powerful little camera from Sony that basically can do everything the online content creator could ever want it's got great stills capability it's got great video capability but what are some of the best ways like what are my favorite tips and tricks to get the most out of the camera let's find out what's up everyone I'm the everyday dad and if I can figure it out you can figure it out so I love the Sony aps-c line of cameras I've used the a 6300 the a 6400 we've tried out the a 6100 the a 6500 is not something that I'm a very big fan of but either way the a 6600 is

A very powerful powerful camera and today we're gonna cover like what are some of my favorite tips and tricks to get the most out of it so let's start off with tip number one is how to get the most out of the auto exposure inside of these Sony cameras now they do a great job I trust these cameras to make a lot of the decisions for me and the first tip I'm gonna show you is you can do it a few separate ways whether you like aperture priority so do you want the aperture to be open as much as possibly get the blurry background you can so what I do is I will go to

Aperture priority but what I do is I'll put an ND filter on whatever lens that i've got and then i will dial the lens in here we'll simulate with ISO I will dial the lens in until the shutter speed is that you know the 180 degree rule so I shoot in 30 frames per second that means that I want the shutter to be at one sixtieth so I will mess around until the shutter speed like I'll dial in the ND filter until the shutter speed is at one sixtieth that way I don't have to mess around with the screen I don't have to guess if what's on the screen is correct

I know it's correct because again the auto exposure side of these cameras is amazing but if you pry let's say you prioritize motion blur like you are a stickler for the 180 degree rule and you always want to stick to it so what you can do then is you can go to shutter priority mode and you can do basically the same thing you don't have to worry as much about the nd that the way you would do that is you would use the nd until you get the aperture to what you want to make it as wide as possible because obviously shutter priority means you can choose the shutter speed and it

Works out pretty well but again I prefer the blurry background because I'm a YouTube creator so I will always default to a per turn and dilated now tip number two and this is something new with the sony a6000 and the sony a7r for now this camera overhead is the sony a7 three and one of its major problems is when it's plugged into a monitor like right now it stops doing the face tracking autofocus in video but here in the a 6600 you can actually keep the eye tracking autofocus so we're going to talk about in another trick but you can keep that autofocus wall plugged into a

Monitor while in 4k so let's we kinda have to we have it set to 1080p because i think one way you can see the display that I'm trying to show so we'll switch it over to 4k and then we'll go over to hold on now I've got to show you it this way so you set it to 4k and then all you have to do is you do have to be in 24 frames per second unfortunately because like who really wants to use that but you can see in 24 frames per second plugged into a monitor can you see that can i zoom in a little bit so you can see that you will continue to have face and eye tracking autofocus when plugged

Into a monitor in 4k 24 frames per second how crazy is that I wish all of their cameras like all of the Sony cameras need to be able to do that like I wish it wasn't just their newest ones but it does make me feel better knowing that the cameras in the future will have this like I would basically call it a requirement this is a camera that does have the flip up screen but most the cameras like the a7 three don't have that and you basically have to use them with a monitor plugged in and you lose the biggest part of the autofocus if you do that so you don't have to worry about

The array I'm so excited for that so that was a tip that you can keep your autofocus but let me show you how to actually get that autofocus set up so if you're moving from the a6 to 500 or the a 6400 to the a 6600 you do get that I autofocus in video which is not something that those cameras can do so to be able to do that you come down here into these stills mode you have to mess with this autofocus setting in the stills mode you go down to face I selector you can do face i priority in AF you can also switch that between human and animals so if you want to take

Pictures of your dog like I take pictures of my dog all the time you can also choose whether it goes to auto like will it pick the right or the left eye or you want to default to the right or the left eye or do you want it to pick it itself I obviously always leave it on auto and the same thing for animals so when you do this then here I'll show you over here so when you do that you then get look it's so good that on my iPad that's controlling my s1h it will even show you the eye tracking autofocus how incredible is that like the Sony autofocus I think is the best

On the market to date like can and yes everybody says can is the best I think Sony is the best because look at that it's an iPad it's log footage it looks gross but it still has the eye tracking autofocus I I love it tip number four now if you are normally a still shooter you don't do a lot of video work one of the big things when it comes to video is audio quality audio quality is the most important part of videos so now if you're using an a 6,600 how do you get it set up to the best audio so what I recommend is if you're using a microphone which you should be using

Some kind of external microphone my general rule of thumb when it comes to audio is can you see this right here on the bottom where it says channel 1 channel 2 those are different audio channels now what I aim to do is I try to keep my peaks like the most exciting that my voice gets I try to keep that at negative 12 so you can come over here back to the movie mode and you can come over to audio recording obviously we want audio recording to be turned on audio recording level I never keep this in auto mode because no real consumer level cameras have good like good auto

Mode so I keep this and you can see you can see the numbers now but basically you want to turn this down as low as possible you want the internal preamps to do as little of the work if you have any kind of a powered microphone like a rode videomic pro plus or one of the deity d3 pros or something like that if you don't then like so we're using the internal microphones right now as an example you would just turn it up a little bit until you can see we're getting real close to that negative 12 so like hey everybody whoo that would be a little too hot hey everybody okay so I

Would keep this in this environment at 11 because again you want the peaks to be at negative 12 you can always like this is a different kind of tip unrelated to the a 6,600 but in my opinion you can always put a little more gain into your audio in your editing software but you can never recover over hot audio so I always try to be a little more conservative and keep my gain as low as possible to get clean audio but then if I have to like in an emergency I can always bump it up a little bit so this is where you go to record your audio and if you do have something like

The cave you can't plug it right in here and then it's a different little process but that's a more advanced tip if you're curious how to use the best out of the k3 I'm leave a comment below and maybe we'll make a video all about that because I love audios it's my thing right I love good audio will make or break your video and my next tip I can't remember I think we're at four or five one of the things especially if you're coming from one of the older Sony cameras Sony had kind of been like hesitant to let you shoot video by

Hitting the shutter button who knows why but you can now in the newer Sony cameras you can set them to set this to be the record button you may be like why is that well look at this their record button is in like the worst place ever so if you want to set it up with a shutter button which I highly recommend you stay on that movie 3 mode that we were just on to do the audio you come down to movie with shutter turn it on and then you can I don't have a memory card in but you can just record by hitting that I love it I'll it's just little things like that

So I like companies not to get too off track but I like companies that take user feedback and make their products better Sony clearly did this it was such an easy thing to do where now we can just use their shutter button instead of having to be it used to have to be like one of these buttons the seat or the C one was just a dedicated and we'll get to the how to set these up um was just a dedicated record button well now you don't have to do that you can save it for other modes that we'll probably talk about here in a minute so my next trick while we're talking about the C 1 C 2

Button let's talk about how to set those up so you do kind of have to bounce back and forth between Stills and video like the settings to do this Sony's menu systems are a little they're a little like you kind of got to learn how to talk Sony but to do this you go over to the movie mode custom operation 1 and then you can pick it's like you can do it when like in use when in video mode when in playback mode so we'll just do the first the top one because you can set all of them to like slave off of that and you just pick like look at all you get all these customizable options

You get rear one rear to top and these are the big ones so what I generally set these two is you have look you got 25 pages of things to set these two I generally set them to two the zoom so I don't know if it works with this lens but you can get clear image yeah you can't do it with this if you have a prime lens on here generally it's the prime lens that can use this you can use digital clear zoom which is one of the other tips but we'll talk about it here Oh quick but it's just a digital clear zoom where you can zoom into like 1.2 1.5 times without any loss

Of quality so digitally you were able to like crop it on the sensor but to get even more out of your lenses which is crazy important so that's the one that I generally set to see one look you can see all the things that you can do you can set two focus modes register I auto focus subject detection exposure compensation flashes color white balance like you have 25 pages of things so basically if this camera can do it you can really change around almost the entire functionality of the camera to work with how you want that to work I love cameras

That do that so the next tip again if you are moving from an older Sony camera the a 6600 much like the a 6400 and the a 7-3 have the ability to tap to focus on the screen itself in here I'll show you how to do that right over here I don't know if I'm gonna be able to show you through the monitor but we'll see if we can do that you go over to the setup option down to touch operation you turn it on and then you can set it to be touch panel touch panel only touch pad only and then you can set it to do like how do you want it to work touch operation yeah it's not gonna let

Us do it um with that in their focus behind it it's kind of hard to focus when it's pure darkness but you can see and then there's also a mode that you can do the track to focus so you tap and then it will track and it is the best focused tracking I've ever seen on a camera it's I've made this joke before but it's like the Terminator right it's like it's like an unrelenting machine that never lets go and it's kind of scary when you think about it but it it works so well it is the best tracking I like obviously when you have it set to face or eye detection it like locks on

To the face of the eye but if you have an object that's not a face or an eye works amazing so again another big tip and trick for me is the picture profiles the reason to go with the a 6600 or the a 6400 over the a 6100 is they do have Sony's picture profiles which are very very powerful now you will get all this camera can only do 8-bit for 200 internal now if you're only going to use the standard picture profile it's not that big of a deal but these do have several options to give you a little more customization give you a little more

Or over the image quality itself and you do that by going back to the stills menu you come over to color white balance image processing one picture profiles now my preferred one the one that I do most of my work on when I'm using these Sony cameras is picture profile one it gives it just a little more contrast it's not like super contrast II but it gives it like it's just a fantastic image that you don't really have to touch it all but you've got options all the way down to picture profile 10 which is there HL G – you've got s log 3 you've got s log 3 you've got s log –

You've got cine 2 I also use cine 5 from time to time but again because it's 8-bit you don't have that like you can't push it that hard so people generally will stick with s log – and HL G if you're trying to get the most dynamic range out of it s log 3 is it's much flatter and it's maybe not something that's within this cameras capability if you're not gonna head like totally nail the exposure and the lighting ok next up so you're out there you're making videos outside the camera one of the problems and the reason I don't like the a 6500 is when you take it outside and you

Start recording in 4k the monitor dims to a level that makes it unusable well thankfully here on the new cameras you can set the monitor level to be just like insanely bright it might be so bright when we set this up that it will be overexposed on the a 73 because it's crazy you could but to do that you come over to setup come over to setup hold on we can't do it when we've got it plugged into the monitor so you come over to monitor brightness and setup one I generally I mean you can dial it in a little bit but I just said it to sunny weather and look

How bright that thing got can you see hopefully it's not overexposed but like when you use this outside even in like direct sunlight and you've got this set up in sunny weather you can see it and that's so important when because I wear sunglasses and when you're out making videos like you don't want to have to like is it is it work and I can't really tell you set this sucker to sunny weather and you will see it it's really good you will lessen your battery life because it takes more power to run them the monitor but because you've got that wonderful z-type battery you don't have

To worry about that as much I love how bright you can make the monitor on this that's the first thing I would say that you need to do besides the Audion once you get your audio dialed in you turn that screen brightness all the way up okay so I've got two more tips and tricks for you none of them really have anything to do with the camera as it comes with the kit so I would recommend because the way this monitor flips up if you are gonna have like a microphone like a directional like shotgun microphone on top of the camera and you want to have the full real estate of

Your screen there are little adapters that you can buy from like small rig it's a little cold shoe adapter that basically relocates this over here so you can have your microphone on this side and it doesn't get in the way of your monitor so I highly highly recommend this I think in for like 10 or 15 bucks on Amazon I have one somewhere we're still kind of unpacking from the move I have one somewhere in my huge just mess of junk there are other ways you could do like you get the road wire let's go and just like clip it somewhere and then you don't have to buy an extra

Piece but it's such a cheap little gadget and it just works so well you just put it you move it over there and then the second tip is something else that I would buy with this camera and that's the other kit lens so this is the 18 to 135 this is the kit lens that you can actually get with the a 6600 but I would recommend that you go find the 16 250 pancake lens and buy one of those used I mean they are are they the most optically sound lens no but it's super small like it only comes out to like right about here it basically makes the a sixty six hundred the a sixty four

Hundred all of the aps-c cameras it basically makes them like point and shoots it makes so small it's a power zoom it takes up no space it takes up no weight ballast is on the lightest of gimbals and not to say that this lens isn't fine this 18 to 135 has it's been okay I've not been like over the moon impressed with it it's given me about the same optical image quality but that's 16 250 it's just it's small scott optical image stabilization built into it i highly highly recommend that you buy one to just turn it into a very small portable

Package but those are my tips and tricks for getting the most out of your a 6,600 if you decide to go buy one what are some of your tips if you're somebody that uses the a6000 line of cameras leave your favorite tips and tricks' below I would love to learn from you I bet the community out here that it's watching this video would love to learn some of the things that you do to get the most out of your camera cuz I don't know everything believe me it's called the everyday dad it's not called the expert that knows all because I definitely I won

Percent don't and if you liked this video I bet you would like the videos where I talk about the a sixty six hundred I compared to the a seven three I compared to the G H five and I talked about how this could fit into your workflow of creating these online videos and you can find those right here click here click here to watch click click click click click click click right here I'm holding it up whoever I'm holding up the video better click on a quickie thanks for watching
