TCL 6-Series R635 4K TV (2020) Unboxing, Setup, Impressions

by birtanpublished on November 2, 2020

you guys i have a confession to make i am addicted to unboxing tvs i'm an unboxing addict it's like a christmas present or a birthday present every time i do it usually very exciting but this is the one i'm most excited about welcome back everyone i'm caleb dennison and today we are unboxing setting up and getting first impressions of the tcl6 series also known as the r635 now you may notice that this box is a little bit smaller than what we're used to dealing with it's a 55-inch model

Normally i would review a 65-inch model and in fact one was here a week ago or so and when we opened it up it was busted these things happen though usually not as often this year's been especially bad i've gotten like four broken tvs and i don't know what's going on with these logistics companies it's like they're punting them straight off the truck but it's been rough anyway never mind all that we've got the 55 here super excited let's get into it

Here's everything that comes in the box you get two feet four screws for those feet batteries the roku remote which is a voice remote by the way power cable and some product literature super simple stand installation the long piece goes towards the front there's three nub ends to help line everything up those just go right there and then we screw you know i hear they have like battery operated drills for this i should get one and we're up and while

We're back here i want to point out a few different things one these feet are the cable management system so you basically lift out this little tab run your cables through and then put the little tab back i like that a lot because it routes the cable directly back from the tv and that should help keep it fairly invisible on most stands also we've got four hdmi inputs at least one of them does 4k at up to 120 hertz maybe all of them do i need to check with gcl on that because

It's not on their website and they didn't mention it when they did a product briefing for me one of them is e-a-r-c even though it says arc on the tv i verified that already so don't freak out if you get this tv and it just says arc it does support earc and the rest of what's back here is pretty standard issue and here we are and really not a bad looking tv the bezels are almost non-existent on the top and sides you do get a nice gunmetal gray accent down here on the

Bottom the tcl logo is understated and that round roku logo is gone it's just a simple little roku tv down at the bottom right hand corner i like it it's not particularly thin but we don't expect it to be because it is a full array local deming backlight technology actually that's one of the most notable things about this tv it is mini led backlit we'll talk about what that means and how it works more in the full review but it's part of what's so exciting about this particular television

And with that i think we should turn this thing on now on to roku setup which i've talked about before it's a rather time intensive process you have to log into your roku account and then go through a whole bunch of rigmarole through the app where it's going to ask you if you want certain apps and then try and make suggestions i usually try to blow through that fairly quickly because i know i'm going to have to adjust everything once it's done with its setup anyway once it's updated

And it's downloaded the latest version of all the apps and restarted ultimately it's going to take about 12 minutes and that's before you log into your apps i got some stuff to say about the state of roku today but i'm going to leave that for the full review because i really want to get on to picture settings so for picture settings those of you who watch these videos know we need to go into sdr hdr and dolby vision separately to make sure everything's adjusted the way we want it

So here i have an sdr youtube clip i'm going to go ahead and pause that and just focus on the settings we'll go down to the picture settings section and out of the box it's in low power mode which we don't want that will limit brightness so we're going to start with movie that's usually the most accurate out of the box local contrast by default is set to high and i'm going to keep that default and toy around with it as we go through the review process all of this looks fairly standard for a movie mode on a tcl tv i'm not going

To mess with any of this stuff i love that action smoothing action clarity and led motion clarity are all turned off by default normally we have to go into those and turn them off that's wonderful i'm highly encouraged by that so we're done for now with the sdr stuff let's uh get into hdr so i've started an hdr video again on youtube and i've paused it so that we can just focus on the settings out of the box it's in dark hdr mode which is a good sign i think that since we picked the

Movie mode it's also picking the dark hdr mode you can see here that bright hdr normal hdr changes the color temperature dramatically i might want to play around with adjusting normal hdr depending on the brightness that i need for the television but we'll keep it at dark hdr for the moment i want to go into other picture settings local contrast still high back light all the way up to 100 which is what we'd expect contrast at 100 also expected and action

Smoothing action clarity led motion clarity all off by default i love it now we want to check out the picture settings for dolby vision and there's a couple of different ways you could do this you could go to netflix and pick your favorite dolby vision enabled title or on a roku tv like this you can just go to the dolby vision channel and start something up it'll go into dolby vision right away we get into the picture settings it looks like it's a normal dolby vision

By default so let's go into picture settings looks like we have a bright mode normal mode and a dark mode even though i've picked dark mode in the others i'm going to go with normal on this just to kind of toy with stuff now in normal mode it looks like we have medium action smoothing medium action clarity and led motion clarity let me go back to dolby vision dark and it's all off okay so it's presuming that if we're in those darker modes we

Kind of want the standard movie mode presets where we turn off all of the action smoothing so instead of just leaving this i'm really going to go into normal i'm going to change the color temperature to warm so that's gonna mimic movie mode and i'm gonna turn action smoothing and action clarity off that is more in line with what i would want from a dolby vision normal mode now you can choose to do what you want

But i definitely recommend turning off the action smoothing and action clarity and led motion clarity if it's ever on by default because that's going to give you some soap opera effect you can tweak it a little bit but for the purposes of my reviewing i always turn that stuff off so first impressions um i've got some work to do like don't get me wrong this tv looks great right out of the box it's doing some things very well black levels look awesome i guess i just kind of expected it to be a

Little bit brighter and by that i mean i think i expected brighter specular highlights in hdr it does get bright it's just when and where it chooses to get bright i haven't been able to compute also i really want to put some numbers to that brightness and i understand that i just got done with the hisense h9g which is like ridiculously bright so that may be skewing my expectations i will say this the tv looks really really good and the value is there undeniably 650 for a 55 inch 900 for a 65 inch

With the picture quality that i'm seeing so far is absolutely going to be awesome i guess i'm just sort of trying to put this on track with some of the other tvs that i've seen so i'm really interested to dig deep take some measurements and find out where this tv is going to fall in our full review thanks as always for watching everyone what do you think about the tcl6 series so far drop me a comment down below like subscribe hit that notification bell and as always visit digitaltrends.com for the latest tech news and reviews
