Starter Replacement 4wd SUV How-to tips & tricks case→ ’07-’12 Nitro

by birtanpublished on September 10, 2020

Brian's mobile one today I'm working on a 2007 dodge nitro this one's a four wheel drive and we're gonna do this starter it's dirty trail dirt first thing you want to do whenever you work on a starter alternator general electric stuff you want to disconnect the

Negative battery terminal drive it has a drive shaft for the front and that kind of gets in your way when you're trying to get to the starter you see I've already started hitting the starter by loosening the two bolts that hold it

Into the transmission on the back side here you can see it's got a plug use the back side of the plug dumb plug it and then there's a thirteen millimeter nut to pull off the back the one that you can see and get too easy it's not that

One it's the one that's up and above as soon as that brassy color is so we're gonna have to remove this part of the drive shaft anyway so we'll do that first it's 15 millimeter or 5/8 I like to use a long extension if you want you

Can put it in four-wheel drive and then have it parked on a level surface a little brace it you can do it by hand and then drive it forward a little bit this is easier if you have a tool drive you can grab the driveshaft and rotate

It like this and access the bolts once the bolts are free what I like to do is rotate it until you've got that little doghouse or hollow spot and then put a pry bar in there is potential to leak gear oil from this so make sure to have

A drain pan handy this one's already been staged for convenience once you got that out of the way you got a lot more room to work can actually squeeze and pull this thing off now you actually kind of squeeze it in the middle and

That is this one back here and there's kind of a square Tang on it so once you've cracked it frères not a lot of room for a ridge once you've cracked it free you can take it off by hand the rest of the way this

Is why we've removed the negative terminal on the battery cause we're gonna take our pry bar and get it behind this little Tang paint a bring whatever you want to call it these don't come off easy

And the reason why is the cable is pushing this way you're trying to push it that way and it'll get crooked and bind so if you can grab up behind it and kind of push and pull the cable from the backside that's the secret and

You'll be able to get it out okay from there you just got to get the bolts out the bottom bolts pretty easy it's just all right there the top bolts another story and I've got a trick for you this is what's known as an S wrench it

Doesn't look like an S unless you turn it this one it oh it's 15 millimeter its box wrench and the reason why this is nice is that top bolt there's a lemon on the top if you're get into here with a ratchet it won't work because the

Ratchet won't fit you can crack it free with this and give it out the rest of the way by hand if you hold the weight of the starter up like that then you get it to move more freely otherwise the same thing you just kind of hangs and

Binds creates a lot of friction with the starter unbolted you can just pull it out like this turn it and I do this solenoid in the up position kind of how it already is you can pull it out no problem you'll notice that the backside

Of this is not detached they forgot these really long skinny bolts that are easy to strip out so I just leave it the way it is so at the new one you just and this is the new one I'm doing this for y'all's benefit you just take it like

This slide it up in turn it and then what I do is I hold it up in place with one hand and then get a bolt started basically just run it in as far as you can get it to hold in there let me show you once I've got it that way there's a

Handful ways to do this there's no one right or wrong way but a strategy that I found that works pretty well that top bolt can only go so far till it hits this so I like to have that one in half way by hand then go back in and put the

Bottom one in quick it's super easy especially with the ratchet like I've been using and then you go back and do the top one and the reason why I do it the way I do is as I said there's a conflict with the top bolt so you have

To do that first anyway but once the threads are in there you can tighten the bottom one down if you just tighten the bottom one first then you have conflict with the bolt and the other thing is is if you tighten it down

And the holes don't line up perfect you don't at least have it started it can cause a problem even if you don't have the top bolt in all the way I just push this guy into place onto the bolt and I can't see it either so don't feel bad

Take the nut between my finger and my thumb I fill it out with my middle finger I can't hear you but I know you're giggling and then I just put that into place I've got a stubby flex ratchet I use for this that I can rotate

The back like that it's got a 13 millimeter half-inch same thing so I'll just run it on this by hand and then go back and set this to tighten remember the Titans everything's copper in there so you got

To be careful if you over torque it you can really create some hassle for yourself later that's good and snug if you have a loose battery connection you will have problems down the road I'll make sure that's pretty snug next

Thing to do it's just take that clip put it on there push it till it goes click that's your signal wire that makes your starter come on if you go to start the car and there's no spots at all chances are good that that wasn't put in good or

Genomically it's easier to go in with your left hand there's your thumb and finger work better that way if you're struggling and fighting with something that's what chance might help you see we've got that

In there I'll go back in and tighten it down with that s right there you could use a normal box wrench that's straight or slightly angled but I found with ass wrench sometimes you get better range of motion another good tool to have in your

Arsenal as these little gear inches that are stubby so I'm using the exhaust as leverage to kind of push not the exhaust the driveshaft just kind of snug that up so that's back in that wasn't too hard was it then we'll take the driveshaft

Put it into place I just kind of want to rock it get it to line in there look at where my rust work sorry my witness marks you can see how this is the same shape as that let's get them to match that'll help me line up my bolt holes

Faster so we got some blue loctite on them let's tighten these in last thing you want to do is lose a driveshaft when you're climbing inhale somewhere where you're in the sand or whatnot and you will be stuck which rhymes with

Something else that you will also be I'm just gonna walk this one in a little bit I'm gonna tighten these down in offices to see how that Owens kind of snugged up and then there's still a big gap here so I want to close up the gap and then go

Back around and tighten them in opposites again first this it'll go a little bit more you have two hands you can hold the drive shaft from turning and then you don't screw up your bolts like that's one-handed mechanics toughs

For the birds but hey that's what I do so where I'm running my extension if because I have exhaust and stuff here I'm just running it down through here getting kind of a macro love it all right so I'll go back and torque those

Down off-camera but that is it that's how this is done bonus footage at the end
