Sony Xperia 1 review

by birtanpublished on November 21, 2020

Hey everyone this is a sony xperia one it's Tony's name as flagship and it's a breath of fresh air thanks to the interesting form factor but what else does this phone offer and is there enough free to get it over the competition I'm Andy for GSA marina and this is our full review of the sony xperia 1 this isn't the tallest phone I've ever seen but thanks to how narrow it is it's easy to make that mistake it's elegant and svelte but the design may come off as being a little conservative you can say that it looks like a business phone

And in comparison to offerings from Samsung in hawawa the Xperia one simply doesn't look as flashy that's not too much of a loss however because I really recommend you get a case or a skin for it the edges of the phone are super slippery and although it's a comfortable hold I kept getting the feeling that it might slip from my grasp at any moment we got to play with Sony's style covered touch case and it works nicely even without opening it image quality and the touch screen sensitivity do take a hit but the phone feels much more secure well I

Certainly don't feel confident drop testing it the phone does feel quite sturdy with Gorilla Glass 6 on the front and back in ip68 rating that means the exterior is well protected thanks to how slim it is it's actually not that difficult to use one-handed and the buttons are all in comfy positions you can pull down the notification shade from the middle of the screen and there's even a one-handed mode in setting so you don't need to awkwardly stretch your thumbs up curiously the power button and the fingerprint reader are separate did a legal reason that

Don't allow Sony to sell the phone in the States but the two combined in one the fingerprint reader isn't our favorite ever because the animation isn't that fast and the sensor tends to miss read your thumb pretty often if you clean it from smudges it's a little faster and more reliable but even then it still needs more pressure from your thumb whereas other readers work with a slight touch there's also a face and lock option but it's not the most reliable so I'd actually stick with the fingerprint reader on the back of the phone you'll find a triple camera setup

And the cameras stick out a little bit so the phone does wobble when you use it on a desk on the top there's a card slot for expandable storage so you can shoot as much footage as you want you can open it up without a sim tool but the phone er starts everytime the novel 21 by 9 aspect ratio certainly has its ups and downs there's a lot of video content out there that's shot in this wider aspect Netflix claims more than two-thirds of its videos are 21 by 9 however once you load a regular is sixteen by nine video like the majority of YouTube videos you'll end up with thick black bars on

The side and a functionally smaller image a benefit of the new aspect ratio is that you get more screen space for vertically scrolling apps such as Facebook or Instagram as well as more room for multi window functionality however the downside is some apps are incompatible with the form factor and show a huge blank space at the bottom of the screen still if these won't bother you this is one of the best screens in the industry if not the best this is the first 4k OLED display on a smart phone with a crazy pixel density of 643 PPI

They also have a new system-wide color setting called creator mode which allegedly provides professional-grade color accuracy in the BT 2020 color space which is the one used by HDR video we couldn't test the color accuracy in this color mode but the standard color mode seems to be quite accurate in the DCI p3 color space which is nice to have as well in standard mode the Xperia can go up to 390 nights of brightness while the auto brightness can go as high as 665 minutes as long as you're browsing photos or videos having 4k on a screen so small seems like a bit of an overkill

But hey it guarantees and bragging rights and it makes for an excellent display of course keep in mind that 4k will only work with apps that support it like Netflix Amazon video and native video apps so battery life is conserved surprisingly this phone doesn't have a headphone jack I know we've stopped expecting them on flagships but it actually comes with regular headphones in the box I mean there's a dongle but still the output we measured had average loudness and good but not great accuracy with headphones the stereo speaker setup has very good

Loudness and more importantly excellent balance between the two speakers which isn't always the case the audio experience is made a little better with a dynamic vibration which makes the phone buzz whenever something more bassy happens on screen be it explosion or elephant stomp however the feature is a bit gimmicky and its implementation bears improvement with a 3300 milliamp hour battery endurance was a dependable 79 hours but we've seen better screen on performance from other phones in this class at least there's an 18 watt power delivery charger which can get you from

0 to 50% in half an hour and up to a full charge in an hour and 45 minutes the Xperia has everything you might need for a good gaming experience Snapdragon a 55 chipset a superlight UI and the excellent screen however we found that quite a few game titles had black bars on the side that make it difficult to play which was a shame the Xperia one has a very vanilla version of Android Pi it even includes the pill navigation instead of proprietary gestures but you can always revert to the classic three button layout it does have a few Sony extras

Like the one handed mode and a cite sense there are some useful apps like album for pictures a video app and a music app that links to google music that allows you to enhance the music using dolby atmos the side sends to our interface also allows for all sorts of shortcuts however is unreliable and if you're lucky it works about a third of the time the time you waste furiously is happening at the edge of the screen you can save and just access the same apps with regular swiping one of the highlights of the Xperia 1 is the triple camera setup on the back there's a main

12 megapixel camera with dual pixel autofocus a 12 megapixel ultra wide camera and a 12 megapixel telephoto snapper with 2 times zoom the camera is fast to use and the camera app is well known from previous phones unfortunately the app isn't perfect and there were a few usability issues for one the phone took longer to switch between the three cameras and were used to and other high-end devices for another impro mode there's no toggle to switch between cameras so the only way to switch to the telecom is by pinch zooming and there's no switching to the

Ultra wide camera from here HDR doesn't always engage when you think you need it and if it switched on manually in Pro Mode IATA focus is disabled day photos are great with rich colors a good exposure great contrast and a ton of detail there's some noise but that's because the algorithm works more to preserve details and smudge noise the dynamic range isn't the best we've seen from a flagship the auto HDR helps at times but it's not always triggered when you need it HDR is quite effective at retaining detail in the highlights but its effect in the shadows

Wasn't as readily noticeable shots using the telephoto were also excellent the lens is a little darker with its f2 point for aperture but the dynamic range is still good we like the Nicene rendition in daytime shots like on the main snapper there's plenty of detail and sharpness and great colors autofocus struggles a bit and is unreliable for shots of people especially when I autofocus is enabled the ultra wide camera isn't quite as detailed as the other two but shots were still good and offers superb contrast colors really pop and the Xperia 1 settings allow for

Distortion correction if a fish isn't to your taste however it lacks autofocus and burst mode and even at the regular camera mode it's a little more awkward to use than the telephoto or main cameras as far as portraits were concerned there were some oil painting like artifacts but otherwise there was great subject separation and natural-looking background blur and we can easily say that these are some excellent shots in contrast to its predecessors the exterior one is surprisingly good in low-light though there isn't an actual night mode the

Phone has a longer exposure type of shot that tries it's best to compensate for the handshake the result is low-light photos that are pretty stunning they have plenty of detail low-noise will preserve colors and not all the highlights are blown exposure is mostly even – although you can't use the telephoto at night you can use the ultra wide pictures are still useable and have a decent detail and low noise levels the Xperia 1 is equipped with an 8 megapixel front camera with an F 2.0 aperture when there's a lot of lights selfies are detailed with true to

Life colors when the light is less bright images are softer although still plenty nice portrait selfies are rather middle-of-the-road and they don't have ideal background separation nor blur as far as video is concerned 4k footage from the main camera has excellent contrast a great dynamic range and colors that are true to life there's a decent amount of detail what we've seen other flagships do better in Full HD videos are some of the best we've seen and have similar colors contrast and dynamic range with the ultra wide camera 4k videos are softer than those from the

Main camera and are a little oversaturated when you use the telephoto camera 4k footage is also softer than that from the main camera although with better colors however in full HD the telephoto actually matched the quality that you get from the main camera the Xperia 1 is a great phone it has all the features that you expect from a flagship like ip68 protection and great performance alongside probably the best screen on the market now the camera experience is still a little rough around the edges but the important thing is that photo and video quality is more

Than on par with a competition the fingerprint reader is less than stellar and battery life is only average but if you can live with those downsides I think that this is a really solid recommendation thanks for watching if you enjoyed this video hit the like button down below subscribe at the Bell icon and I'll next time
