Smart Switches Make Your Home Smart – My Experience after using for 2 years!

by birtanpublished on October 5, 2020

Hi guys this is ranjit and in this video let's talk about smart plugs and you can actually make your devices that are not smart smart using this and have been actually using this smart plug for quite a bit of time and i didn't want to rush with this video in fact the first smart plugs that i got were almost two years old so i want to really test them out before making a video which ones are reliable which are not for example but the first smartplugs that i got were from octa this is the new one this is the wi-fi

Only it had a hub and stuff like that that i got almost two years ago uh but they were pretty expensive so i even got some chinese ones uh for example as you can see on count once uh and they worked fine for about six and months but they count out uh fortunately doctor one uh is still working and recently now i have purchased even this one this is the wi-fi only one so this doesn't require that stupid hub that they have uh so let me share my experience what do i feel about these smart plugs

And in what areas they have been used for and there are some annoying things also about them let's talk about them uh and again these work with the what do you say of course your smartphone but the beauty is that these work with what do you say voice assistants like alexa and even google home i mostly use it with alexa for example if you notice we have this back lighting in the office and i can control it uh for example the name of that is known

As floor light so if i say alexa switch off floor light and the light should be switched off so let's have a closer look at the same now guys the old one actually required this this is the octa hub so this was additional thing uh the new ones are just wi-fi so you don't need this uh hub so guys these are the two plugs and this is the older one that came with the hub this was actually connected to my geezer for almost two years and this is the new one that is only

Wi-fi as you can see and i would say both are very similar in size they are pretty big actually so if you have multiple uh what is your sockets it will block it that is the annoying thing uh and i would say in terms of build quality they're mostly very close to each other but i felt that the older one that came with the hub has slightly better build quality but again i have also been using my ac with this wi-fi plug and it has been functioning very well

But this one i have been using for over two years now guys as you can see there is one plug over there and this is actually connected with the new wi-fi uh only octa plug and this is actually the 16 amps that's why i'm able to run the ac and i'll name this one as ac plug and as you can see right now the ac is working so let's control it via alexa so i'm just going to say the command alexa switch off ac plug

And as you can see it's switched off it's not instant it takes about a second to a second and a half as you can see now my ac is shut off i can switch it on again alexa switch on ac plug again i have one more thing this is my tv rack so this is also connected to a smart plug and let's switch it on alexa switch on samsung tv rack and it takes about a second or two and now it's powering on and as you can see it's powered on

The tv is on standby so yeah as you can see i control the whole rack via that one thing is important with the smart plug is that they should remember the current state for example right now as you can see it is switched off and let's see if the power goes off and the power comes up it should store that state uh fortunately the octa1 does that but some of the cheaper chinese ones don't do that so be careful if you're going with those so guys let's look at the app now and you can download it from the play store uh this is the octa

App and as you can see it's showing me my wi-fi plugs and this is my hub my old devices uh but i'll just show you with this one and as you can see right now this is the light strip that we have in the office and if you can control it from here and if i just press off it should switch off let's switch it on again and if you notice there is a icon of of timer over here so you can actually set schedules and even timers for example let's say i want this light strip to switch off automatically

After some time i use it with my geaser actually uh if anybody manually also switches it on automatically after 30 minutes it should switch off for us for example to do that here as you can see you can go to the scheduled timers i haven't added any schedule but as you can see you can just shed a shadow to switch on at a particular time and switch off at a particular time and you can even set which days or every day so that's very easy and

You can also have this auto off as you can see uh auto off timer but the thing is as if uh as you can see the maximum is three hours 59 minutes i don't know for what reason uh but again this is what we have so let's say you have switched on something your ac or whatever and you have forgotten to switch it off automatically the timer will run in the background and after it reaches it'll auto switch it off so again i feel it's a nice feature that we have and you can also look at the activity so it stores the activity history for the

Last three days if you really want that and again gives you an idea about the supported commands both for alexa and google assistant so as you can see we have uh what do you say names over here i've named the first one as ac plug second is this floor light you can change the name for example this is in my office so let's change the name and i can just go here and i'll just rename it to office floor light and what will happen is now with alexa we should be able to control this one

With this name so guys what do i feel about these uh smart plugs so let's specifically talk about this one because this is the one that i've been using a lot and the pros as i've mentioned earlier also is that that application is good it has options for scheduling for example uh morning i generally use the schedule for my geezer it switches on automatically at about 6 30 in the morning and switches off after about at 7 50. so automatically it switches on and switches off

And you can also have auto switch off timers this is useful for example let's say you forget something you can switch it on build quality comparatively if you compare it with many of the other chinese counterparts is good but again these octave products are expensive i would say i like the fact that it works both with google home as well as alexa and it works very well in fact i hardly use the app only when i'm setting up a new plug i use the app and if i need to add any

Schedule apart from that i just do not use the app i mostly control it via alexa now if you talk about the cons i feel with these wi-fi ones specifically the wi-fi range is horrible and it works only in the 2.4 gigahertz span it simply does not support five gigahertz so you have to be aware and i was particularly very very disappointed with the wi-fi range of this one for example here in my office every wi-fi device i have used even i have

Wireless printers that get connected with my router but this one was simply not catching my wi-fi so i had to actually put a repeater so again if you think uh if your home is a little bit complex yes it'll work in the same hall or even the slightly next room but if you're planning to put the switch about two rooms apart the wi-fi range is very very bad so you have to be aware of it i'm like really disappointed with this fact because this works only on wi-fi

And they should have worked a little bit more on making the wi-fi antennas better on this one so i feel that's the biggest flaw and personally here in the office it's working but actually i have to put an external what do you say wi-fi repeater then only it's catching the signal so i feel that's the biggest flaw at least with this one uh also as i've told you the auto shut off timer maximum limit is three hours 59 minutes which is actually very very silly on this one and again they say

These are smart plugs or whatever but again apart from that alexa connectivity and using it with a smartphone app we don't have extra smartness in any of these plugs in fact i was hoping that we could get what you say power usage starts how much power is being used etc but if you are expecting something like that no you don't get that you can only just switch on switch off schedule etc from the app and also uh i would say the pricing at least of

These octa ones are on the pricier side though it's an indian company but i feel uh they're sort of over charging earlier they were very expensive now because of the wi-fi the price has fallen but still again they are pretty expensive for example uh i got this i purchased this kit for 1800 or something i'll just add the screenshot of amazon i don't recall uh but again if you buy the single plug even the six amp one the small one uh i would say the price currently i was

Checking is about 1100 rupees but then some of the amazon sales i've seen it go as low as about 650 rupees so again they do charge quite a bit of premium you have to be aware of that especially octa compared to some of the other brands that i have noticed so i don't like that so i hope they improve them on the pricing of these plugs they don't gouge the users regular prices almost double when you get on the sale and also they improve the wi-fi i feel that is the big problem but apart

From that again if you have smart uh what do you say speakers in your home like what do you say alexa or even google home i feel uh these do make a difference and for example i control my geezers uh my ac my then you saw that tv rack etc because the plug is very low inside so hard to reach points like that i use these smart plugs and i've been using them and it's actually pretty helpful but again i would say to get the most of this get these only if you have smart

Speakers like google home or the uh lx app because when controlling it via voice is the thing that makes them special anyways guys what do you think about this video let me know in the comment section slightly different again there is one more accessory or that they have again it's not just to uh limit the doctor even others uh that's known as ir blaster kind of a thing and using that for example our acs are what do you say

Television etc all work with the remote controller and this tries to automate it with voice i have ordered it i should be getting that very soon so do let me know if you guys want a video on that using that single hub can we control multiple devices like acs or even televisions uh let me know if you want a video about that and guys that's it for now thanks for watching and guys i still not subscribe to my youtube channel hit that subscribe button this is ranjit and i hope to see you in my

Next video take care guys
