Sefree Apollo 32″ Review – the Half Price Surface Studio Clone

by birtanpublished on January 8, 2021

This is Lisa from mobile tech review and now for something different this is the Apollo 32 it's made by a company called set free SEF re yeah I don't know anyway it's a Chinese company and this is on Kickstarter supposed to ship in December 2019 and Kickstarter projects you know I'm not always into them but this one was intriguing because basically it's a Half Price surface studio two wildly expensive product the surface studio 2 but something that is just delectable and I've been pleasantly surprised since it arrived particularly look at this 4k display I mean nice first impression we're gonna look at it now so the Apollo

Is a 32 inch all-in-one computer sea power brick right not mobile you get the idea there obviously a surface studio clone and I'm not gonna complain about that because surface studios are pretty darn cool and incredibly expensive at $3,500 to $4,200 then we're talking not even very late you and hardware there on the surface studio 2 anymore so this runs about $1,500 to 2,200 dollars and there's a middle $17.99 option and you can see on-screen which you get for the different versions of this and it's got an Intel Core i7 quad core processor it's the 8550 you so this is a 15 watt

Ultrabook CPU whereas surface studio rolls with a 45 watt CPU that you would find in a gaming laptop or a mobile workstation but that one is an old seventh generation CPU so the performance difference isn't SuperDuper wide but you'll get a little more grunt sir still from the surface studio to inside for graphics the base model has just Intel UHD 620 graphics you probably might not be as interested in that that's up to you the middle tier which is the one that we have has NVIDIA GTX 1050 TI graphics and the high end is 810 60 ti dedicated GPU and these are the

Laptop versions and the GPUs not the full mobile giant-sized card which wouldn't fit in the small base of this obviously you've got a bunch of USB ports on here you've got USB see conveniently located on the side along with where the headphone jack is you have Ethernet you have HDMI so display connections all that sort of thing well done now one of those USB a ports will be taken up by the little wireless keyboard mouse driver receivers a teeny tiny little thing and it comes with a keyboard and Nas I don't know if these will be the

Final ones they're plasticky they don't feel luxurious the way Microsoft's products do but honestly they work really well the mouse responds very well and the keyboard on this has a nice tactile feel so it's funny yeah they're they're black they're plastic they're not much to look at but they weren't good so this has a zero gravity hinges that direct corner of the surfaces and surprisingly I just like I didn't expect the display quality to be this good I didn't think the hinge was gonna be nearly as good as it is and it feels an awful lot like the surface studio hinge

15 to 95 degrees of up-and-down motion on this so that makes a lot of sense so you want to draw on it because yes it comes with a pen I it's easier to tilt it down office instead of using an upright supports touch as well now speaking of the pen you see this giant my god aluminium cigar here that they sent with it they say the final pen will be a normal saw his pen this one actually has double-a batteries of the usual quadruple A batteries it's a big honker of a pen I hit proto typically speaking it's probably you see logic digitizer it's not entering it's not

Wakame yes but it also works very well the only complaint I would have is and sometimes in some drawing programs you'll see the line lag a little bit behind where the pen is if you're doing large gestures that sort of thing but in terms of pressure curves and the sensitivity of this and the calibration there is spot on I'm really pretty impressed with that just like the 4k display it may not be three by two aspect ratio or Beyond 4k resolution which surface studio 2 is at 4500 by 3000 for them but this is your full 4k UHD display IPS brightness on

This is pretty good for something you're obviously gonna be using indoors at 310 nits and it has a pretty good color gamut in fact it's not your usual just full srgb and 75% of Adobe RGB they had 83% of Adobe RGB some of the only color metrics in terms of white point and stuff like that aren't ideal but it calibrates well and for the color accuracy you can see it's actually doing quite well I'd say the display is one of the strong points so much so that apparently in there we're going to make a 27-inch for any of this at first but it looks like

They're just gonna do a 32 but they will sell a 27-inch as a standalone monitor for $5.99 in terms of the rest of the internals you have an m2 nvme SSD slot and we have a hoo disk it's coming to named boot SSD get a 256 gig boot SSD and a one terabyte hard drive as well it's a two and a half inch notebook size hard drive now it depends on what option and yet you can get a bigger SSD and you can get a two terabyte hard drive as we move up to the more expensive models or you could upgrade it yourself I haven't taken this one apart yet but you have to take off the rubber feet on the bottom

And unscrew the four screws to access the internals I expect that there's two RAM slots in here we have 16 gigs of dual-channel ddr3 memory and ours 32 gigs as the maximum they make available on the high-end $2,200 model so pretty decent specs and an architecture that is in spirits similar to Microsoft's studio 2 it has two front cameras a 5 megapixel everyday normal camera and a night vision camera as well as 2 far-field microphones onboard honestly overall the fit and finish on earth they're ok they're not spectacular they're not terrible but it's not bad

Looking by the way it's also available in a grey that looks just like surf is great if you don't like the matte black but I was actually pretty impressed with the robustness reliability in the performance of it now this is still in early unit like I said they're not shipping this until December of 2019 and I did notice a couple of things for ours I could not enable sleep they say that they will have that all sorted out and fixed and the other thing is that they are in firmware their thermal throttling it a little bit early like it's 75 degrees centigrade for those core

Temperatures where a hundred degrees centigrade is allowable max for the CPU core temperatures again I expect them to address that – I don't know why they're so conservative but honestly it doesn't run that hot so it hasn't really hurt performance a whole lot it's not a gaming PC with a GTX 1050 Ti or 1060 TM but you can play some games on this is some older games you want to play Bioshock on this certainly even some more demanding games on low settings you can actually do that and you know at 1080p resolution I would drop that down not at native 4k as something for

Photoshop it's actually pretty cold between the touch the hugeness of the screen the pretty good color gamut on this and the pen for photo retouching this is great for art it's not even bad because it has a pretty responsive pen not not bad at all if you're doing video editing you could do it I still prefer a 45 watt these days six core laptop CPU in on onboard are something even stronger at all possible but it can handle 4k video editing you'll see the occasional stutter in Adobe Premiere it's not too bad yeah but not ideal either but for

Anything less demanding than 4k video editing it's certainly quite good for 2d artwork for illustrator and all that sort of thing for having fun at home for playing touchscreen games with your family it does all those things quite well now like any product that's on Kickstarter I'm gonna reserve final judgement on this because again several months before they have the shipping version I don't know you know how it's gonna be after they fix the thermal throttling and the sleep issues the final finish on the product when it's gonna be like but it looks

Really promising so far also it does have fans inside you can hear them at all times the fans always spinning Sulli it's not loud and if you're pushing it hard it doesn't get a lot louder perhaps it should actually spin a bowl of higher hours fan is kind of a little bit buzzy again hopefully they'll address that soon so that's the Apollo 32 and I'm pretty pleasantly surprised by it like I said I mean from the zero-gravity whoa that works pretty easily hinged a fairly convincing copy of a surface studio – I'm the display on this really very nice to touch the pen input they're actually

Quite good on this performance isn't bad but obviously they have some bug's to work on stuff but this is still an engineering prototype at this point the fit and finish I mean the quality of the chrome application on the hinges the surface finish isn't gonna be as ritzy a surface studio – but then again it is half the price so yeah I'm gonna be watching to see how this goes on Kickstarter I'm Lisa from mobile tech review be sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel more cool tech videos and hit that notification bell so you know about our
