Robot scat, jail rap, and the telephone in music

by birtanpublished on July 2, 2020

there's so much you can do with a phone

snapchat snapchat snore Kate but why

hasn't someone used the phone to play

music how come there isn't a 1-800

number that I can call to hear a robot

do the scat part for freak on a leash

wait a second

there is da boom neck down um no na

minha da boom neck down um no na minha

go in May 2015

writer Joe evike set up a one eight five

five number that you could call to hear

the iconic scat part from freak on a

leash by Korn recited in that unsettling

text-to-speech robot town so instead of

the soulful howls of my boy Jay devil

you were able to enjoy future scat da

boom neck down ooh um no na Mina the

robot would just keep going until you

hung up and I thought this was basically

the most brilliant and creative thing

ever since the invention of the phone

and it brought up a question who else is

using the phone created there is one

obvious answer

They Might Be Giants who casual fans

will know is the duo behind the theme

from Malcolm Oubre Dini setup dial a

song in 1984 advertising the number in

the back of the Village Voice curious

fans are just curious weirdos could call

up and hear a recording of a new song

every week provided the machine wasn't

broken and the number wasn't busy TM VG

used the service to stimulate their

creativity to expose themselves to new

audiences and to post demos for songs

that would become mega it's

a little birdhouse

dialo song help tab and stay active when

bike injuries and poverty had sidelined

their live performances and in the end

it was one of the quirky ways that they

endeared themselves to a substantial

audience of like-minded weirdos the

service somehow lasted until 2008 when

the backup machine died but the band has

revived it in 2015 there's no jazz

no one has quite managed to tap the

creative potential of the telephone like

They Might Be Giants but a few rappers

have come close if in what could be

described as the reverse yes

signs verse on the confessions part 2

remix is just one of many rap songs

recorded from the telephone in jail

including shines 50 cent diss track for

the record artists like Matt gray and

x-rated have recorded entire albums over

the phone which from everything I know

the jail from watching Oz and orange is

the new black is very impressive to me

because it seems extremely difficult I

sincerely doubt that Piper could lay

down a track like that long before

x-rated was serving 31 years to life a

company called tele music I was

pioneering music over the phone in 1909

customers would call into a central

exchange and request a piece of music it

cost seven cents and then an actual

human being and what the company called

their music room would play a phonograph

over the phone line to be amplified by a

special receiver on the customers end it

was basically 1909 Spotify old

acquaintance be forgot keep your eye on

the gravel

hey who do you think 1909 s Taylor Swift

was sticking it to the telephone company

and demanding better treatment in higher

royalties I bet it was Billy Murray

seems like a rascal I'm no Frankie

hanky-panky I'm as if we're on a Yankee

and I mighty proud a battle flag to

fight for Uncle Sam

what do you think is there untapped

creativity in the telephone let us know

you think in the comments and be sure to

subscribe for new episodes of this

exists every week I'm at a point where I

want to be spending more time on this

exists I would like to make more shows

or make a podcast or do other stuff

related to it because I'm really

enjoying this a lot so I've made a

Google Form okay I just got to interrupt

with one quick thing and I really need a

better way to do this but if you are

going to Fan Expo in Toronto and you're

watching this video before the morning

bunch of great authors and kane hodder

fan Expo please stop by this panel come

say what's up and hear me read from my

grade 3 novel that is nothing like a

goosebumps book the creature I assure

you it is full of chills and thrills and

you know even if you can't make it but

you're at the con I'll be hanging around

so come say what's up and now back to me

because I want to know what you liked

about the show and what you would like

more of there's an amazing community

that sort of happened here and frankly I

would like to continue to be part of it

by doing more stuff so take a look in

the description there's a forum there

like and don't like about the show what

you'd like more of if I had more time
