Portless iPhone in 2021 Might be a Bad Idea

by birtanpublished on February 9, 2021

There's a couple rumors brewing around that Apple's looking to remove the Lightning porch no not in favor of USBC but just no charge port at all on at least one of next year's iPhones next year 2021 they want to be that courageous right I'm not gonna say it's impossible but I will say that some things have to happen in order for that to be possible so let's begin so it doesn't sound that crazy at first just because Apple has been the company known for removing things it's been a meme for years rage nicked a film won't have a display and won't have a camera

Just to slap a glass starting at $5,000 you guys are as innovative as the iMac design team when it comes to your Apple jokes you used the same ones every year but there's a bunch of stuff that would have to take place it it's actually a lot more complicated than a lot of people may think because if there is no lightning charger with the iPhone that would inevitably mean they would have to start shipping a wireless charger with the iPhone and Apple doesn't even currently make their own wireless charger there's some rumors that they're working on their own I don't think it's

Gonna be this one I know there's some conspiracy theorists out there that think it's coming back but sorry it's just any time Apple comes forward and said we cancelled this product and we're not gonna release it it usually means they're not going to release it that's just how it's worked in the past but either way if this thing came out it would not be shipping with the iPhone for one it would be way too expensive and it's overkill for something that you just include with the Box it sounds like apples even considering removing the wired earbuds that come with the iPhone

12 this year just for the sake of you know pushing the sales of air pods but if there was no charge port I bet a lot of you would assume ok cool now you can ship air pods with the box yeah no sorry don't think that would happen either because wearables are an incredibly growing sector for Apple right now they're generating a ton of revenue off of that and if Apple were to just start including them with the iPhone even if they were some type of Cheaper dumbed down version of air pods that would still hurt the sales of their wearables revenues

So what ming cheeked well reported today makes way more sense to me that they would stop including the wired headphones because air pods are a phenomenon everyone's buying them and the sales of them are doing great so why keep shipping these wired headphones that no one's gonna use I know the last four iphones i've unboxed i've not needed to use the included headphones so apple's probably just gonna be like you know what get some air pods so it's far more likely that if Apple does remove the charge port there would just be no headphones in the box at all which kind

Of sucks but I think people will eventually get used to it but there's a lot of use cases that people have for having a wired charger for example a lot of people love using their phone while it is charging when they're in bed or they just happen to charge it the night before and there would be use cases absolutely removed if we went completely to Qi charging alone that's why a lot of people are theorizing that there's gonna be some type of inductive side charger somewhat similar to the Apple pencil to charge connector on the iPad pro which is just

A magnet some people think this is gonna be the return of MagSafe because they removed it on the Mac books and that means they're gonna add it to the iPhone for some reason which essentially would mean you have this kind of inductive charger at the end of a wire that you could dock to the iPhone magnetically and still charge it but at that point why even remove the charger you're still using a wire you've just changed the connector so it's not even wireless charging only at that point so in my opinion those rumors sound kind of stupid because I don't think Apple would

Remove lightning in favor of just another wired connector but this one is inductive but the inductive charger requires a wire that you have to interact with and hold because if they did that inductive charge mechanism it's not like you could just drop it on a tee charger like you can now and have it start charging because you'd have to pick up the wire and interact at the end of the day it just becomes the same thing so I don't think that's what it's gonna be but Apple would absolutely need some type of the innovation or revamp when it

Comes to wireless charging because in its current state I don't think that would cut it you know when Apple remove the headphone jack on the iPhone 7 there are a bunch of arguments they gave on the stage which come on guys even if you hate that they remove the jack you got to give them credit they're the only company that actually talked about it on stage because Samsung removed it Google removed it and none of them wanted to address it they were just kind of like yeah forget all those headphone jack jokes we made in our commercials let's just move on this is the future we all

Know that right okay let's uh there's an adapter in the box you'll be you'll be fine no Apple actually dedicated some time they were like look okay the headphone jack is nearly a hundred years old it's a very dated port we've been using it for a long long time and we're also introducing air pods because we believe wireless technology has gotten to a point where audio at least on a phone you know they didn't remove the headphone jack on the MacBook or the iMac or any type of Mac really and a lot of the budget iPad still have headphone jacks so they were saying whatever audio

You're listening to or whatever you're doing on a phone doesn't require necessarily that super low latency or that super high quality audio to the point that hey you know what Wireless is getting good enough let's just move to that if you need fired you know you can still use the lightning ports and this is a single-use port unlike the Lightning charge plug because the headphone jack plug was only used for one thing and apples just wanting to push the industry forward and that's what happened look at how many air pods clones we have today and how a

Wireless headphones are getting cheaper and cheaper and they're selling great people love them there's a huge market that is blossomed off of that decision and I do agree with them it took courage because there was a lot of backlash at first but in the end we all benefit with better wireless headphones that we probably wouldn't have gotten if Apple just kept supporting the headphone jack so wireless headphones had gotten a lot better it was a dated port it was really really old in the first place and it also helped with water resistance on the iPhone 7 because they switched to the

Solid state home button I know there were headphones that kept the headphone jack and water resistance but we're talking about the iPhone today specifically okay so in that sense they were able to improve the water resistance of the iPhone 7 by not having as many big gaping holes in the product which makes sense right also you can argue it helped with a slightly larger battery life and that kind of thing so how much of that logic though can we apply to the Lightning charge plug we can't argue it's a single-use port because it's used for third-party

Accessories it's used for charging it's used for data it's used for factory reset Sandri stores and stuff like that so it's kind of a multi-purpose port so you can't argue that for two you can't really say it's a hundred years old because it was introduced on the iPhone 5 so in the grand scheme of ports in our existence it is not terribly old I'm not saying lightning should stick around I prefer USB see to be honest but you don't have the same argument you have with the headphone jack and water resistance it kind of be a real niche move to say like well this one's even

More water-resistant because the current iPhone 11 pro and 11 Pro Macs are some of the most water-resistant phones on the market that can go 4 meters deep for 30 minutes and that's with a charger and I think that covers most people's water usage I guess someone out there might want a port less iPhone because they go scuba diving and then go deep deep dive and they don't want to put a case on their phone but again like I said extreme niche market that would be like yeah the 11pro 11 pro max not water-resistant enough I need something that can go even deeper and I don't

Think they would make that fundamental of a design shift just for that small of a market could it help the battery life a little bit I mean maybe but 11 Pro and 11 Pro max already have insanely good batteries that lasts most people throughout the entire day so again the niche audience that would appreciate an even better battery life by not having a charge port anymore that doesn't sound like they would remove it for that logic alone so moving to Qi charging exclusively I think is going to require Apple to revamp

Wireless charging in some way similar to what oneplus did with the oneplus 8 Pro you know they support 30 watt wireless charging I feel like Apple would have to do some type of version of that because they're shipping fast chargers with the 11 Pro in 11 Pro max now so they obviously care somewhat about including fast charging with the iPhones now at least if you're paying top dollar for them and wireless charging as we all know is significantly slower than Wired unless you do something like oneplus did so if they are removing the charge port they have to revamp or relaunch a

Wireless charger and it make it incredibly fast at charging compared to what we have now it all for what at the end of the day here's the main reason I have my doubts about Apple releasing portlets iPhones next year is because what does it help with I mean every single year we've kind of gotten lucky with the upgrades between 2017 with the iPhone 10 that was a huge massive upgrade to iPhones all these changes the following year we got two new form factors the 10 are on the 10s max was an S year but there were new screen sizes so it was easy to be excited for it

Obviously iPhone 11 and 11 pro we're just kind of ironing things out providing ultra wide night mode better battery lives fast charging and if they kept the prices the same or lower which was really cool and this year I think might be one of the last big iPhone upgrades in a while because we've got more form factors all oled new squared off design camera upgrades for the pros really really competitive pricing for the regular iPhone 12s and what are they gonna do next year I mean every time I revisit this argument everybody runs out of things to say like well maybe higher

Refresh rates for all the displays but then we come back to the argument of well higher refresh rate most consumers don't care it's gonna be an S year for sure next year is absolutely going to be a spec boost okay a 15 chip even faster now cool maybe telephoto cameras for the cheaper models or something small like that and if the only big change to expect in 2021 is well one of the iPhones doesn't have a charge port cool do you think a lot of people would upgrade for that in fact no I bet a lot of people would be angry about it and just say well I'm not

That one because my iPhone 12 works fine and that still looks like the new one so maybe they do something slightly smaller with the knotch but whatever they're doing in 2021 it has to be somewhat minor and as the smartphone market is maturing and people are holding on to their phones longer and longer than ever before there's not going to be a lot of good reasons to upgrade in the future so if Apple starts removing charge ports and making charging more inconvenient for the unused and telling them out no you got all move to wireless charging now and

The people will complain about it being used as a maintenance port now I have to do all that wirelessly or how do I factory reset or how do I use these third-party accessories and all the adoption of lightning over the years will suddenly come to a crash because this iPhone wouldn't have it so that would just steer people even more so away from upgrading than we already are because the smartphone markets in decline anyway and this would absolutely not help that cause so that's why I have my doubts that they're doing it as soon as next year I think that the leakers

And analysts claiming that's going to happen are more than likely hearing about some prototype but that is not a finalized design because as we know any type of leak that's a year or two years ahead of launch never ends up being very accurate in the first place and also all the people saying there's gonna be a portlet iPhone keep saying it's just gonna be one of the lineup it's not gonna be the entire lineup which also doesn't make sense to me it's not like they removed the headphone jack for just the iPhone 7 or just the 7 plus no when they removed it they removed it on

Everything and that was it it also didn't bring it back for certain models so you know when Apple adopted USB C on the 12-inch MacBook they later brought that to the entire MacBook Air and MacBook Pro lino once they got the revamped designs they went all in on USB C so I'm not sure why Apple would have a distorted lineup where you have high end iPhone with no charge port and then the cheap iPhones with I charge ports because that would honestly just make everyone go for the cheaper one because what's the selling point what's the advantage of buying the iPhone that

Doesn't have a charge port in it this one has slightly better battery or it's slightly more water resistance I don't see that being a good reason to go with a pro iPhone because shouldn't the pros have access to lightning accessories and third-party stuff and maintenance ports that they use for resets and that kind of thing so it doesn't really sound like something Apple would do and they probably want to get to the point where they can charge things over the air but that technology has been in development for years now and we're still not anywhere closer than

What we were three years ago so I don't think they're gonna come up with charging over-the-air within the next few years I think that's live – ten years away before that even gets usable so I don't think that's the miracle they've come up with I think we're hearing about prototypes and assuming that's going to come to finalize products but keep in mind guys I'm about as accurate as the iOS weather app so don't trust me that much what do you guys think is gonna happen feel free to hit me up over on Twitter join my discord we can chat more about it there

This is your apple shape here and I would still buy an iPhone if it didn't have a charge port because I barely use my night earch everything wirelessly anyway so just keep that in mind I don't want them to stick with lightning I think it'd be great if they switch to USB see but I know they're not gonna do that so the Apple sheep will be fine I'll see you in the next one
