Plugable External NVMe SSD Enclosure Review

This is Lisa from mobile tech review and good things do come in small packages those of you who buy laptops and sometimes upgrade the SSDs afterwards you're caught in a kind of a canoodle if it has a fast PCIe nvme SSD there are enclosures on the market plenty of them nowadays for the SATA 3 interface SSDs but the fast nvme SSDs that come in your HP Spectre laptops the razorblade 15 we're going to use for this experiment many others use nvme drives so what do you do if you're upgrading the job so for example this is my razor blade 15 i put a 1 terabyte SSD inside of here I had the 256 gig left over after that was

Internal first thing you want to copy the operating system from the existing internal drive first onto your bigger SSD something like this makes it possible you just pop your brand-new 1 terabyte SSD in here duplicate the internal drive onto this and then you can swap your drives and life is very simple also after you're done with that why would you want to waste this extra SSD that you have so you can turn it into an external drive so nvme SSDs are the fastest on the market it will not be as fast at the internal drive because the

Internal interface is the most fast the fastest of all but it'll still be pretty darn quick this particular one pluggable that we're looking at it's about 50 bucks on Amazon so this has USB C Gen 2 that's 10 gigabit per second twice as fast as USB a 3.0 although you can use that connector if you want but if you're going with a Gen 2 connection it's gonna be pretty fast and it's also gonna be about twice as fast as a SATA Drive in an external closure so gonna look at how you do this now alrighty so inside the box you get well a little guide a cute little card that tells you to contact if

You have any troubles and tell them you love them if your aren't having troubles here's the enclosure it's a tool-free enclosure so notice this has fins this is a lumen enclosure and this is to dissipate heat which is a good thing because nvme SSDs are fast and hot little things so you've got a little lock unlock switch if you want to open it up you just do that and obviously this is where you're gonna stick your drive so what I have here is a samsung 960 Evo nvme SSD you can use just about any nvme SSD that's on the market this is

What I happen to have handy so you take that out you stick it in here just like that and there it is and you've got this little rubber bumper right here that acts like a screw it if you were screwing that into the motherboard holds it in place and then we just slide it closed making sure the arrow is lined up at the arrow it will make a screeching sound maybe as it goes but there yeah so how do you connect this thing cables so we have two kinds of cables here we have our USB a cable if you can do it though use the USB C gen 2 cable because that will be faster if you have USB C gen 2

On your laptop they also include a couple of heat dissipation pads in case you need it probably you're not going to add some extra these little rubber plugs in case it gets a little bit mangled at some point so now we plug it into the USB C / Thunderbolt 3 port on the razorblade 15 advanced model and let's see what we get so having plugged in the drive there the contents right there showing up as my D Drive right now and let's run crystal disk mark to see how the speeds are again we're connected via USB C so I sundar ball 3 so that's Gen 2 speeds and

Here's our crystal disk mark results and again it's not going to be as fast as if this drive was internal the 960 could do almost 2,000 for this value here but that's the limitation of USB C Gen 2 10 gigabit per second throughput so that's pretty good let's compare that to a samsung t5 SSD next and for those of you who don't know what that is that's one of these these are pretty popular these days this is also USB C based product and there's our test result for the Samsung t5 SSD this is the 500 gig and it's a USBC gen 2 interface as well and you can see that's really impressive

Impressive that pluggable is almost twice as fast on these SSD benchmark tests nice it's not even hot after running that benchmark so that's well done by the way the drive has slidable mount points so if you've got a shorter SSD which you probably don't you probably have the standard 22 80 but you could put it in this as well and again nvme only this does not do SATA 3 SSDs this is really what we've been waiting years for it's pretty darn good I'm Lisa from mobile tech review and that's the pluggable sisty enclosure for nvme drives be sure
