Panasonic S1H VS Panasonic GH5! Is 6k Worth THREE Times the Price?!

by birtanpublished on January 28, 2021

No kidding the Panasonic gh4 is probably my favorite camera ever made it does basically everything that I could ever want in order for me to create all of these online videos however sometimes you've got to go big or go home right and lumix very recently released the s1h now this isn't necessarily an update to the gh 5 but it's a full-frame camera with a lot of the same features and even more features kicked up – alone however those updates aren't cheap and the s1h does come with a much bigger price tag and it much I mean bigger physical body to boot today we're gonna talk about it should you spend the money

To get the first approved Netflix hybrid camera or does the old trusty workhorse maintain its position as the best overall camera let's find out what's up everyone I'm the everyday dad and if I can figure it out you can figure it out look it's no secret I shout it from the mountaintops I am absolutely bonkers for the Lumix G H v this cam has been with me all over the country I've used this for over the past 18 months for everything from these talking head videos to all of my b-roll it's just I mean it is the perfect camera which is probably why I've made a video calling

It the perfect camera legitimately there is another camera out there that does what this can do well there wasn't until about 2 ish months ago when this behemoth dropped the Lumix s1h does everything that the gh 5 can do and more it matches it and exceeds it in recording specs better color science better ibis better low light better everything except that price tag and really quickly before we get too far into the video I am a huge lumix fanboy and if they wanted to chat with me I wouldn't be against it lumix if you're watching I'm just saying but these are

My two personal cameras that I paid for out of my own personal money plus I'm not a filmmaker I make home videos and I make youtube videos so no matter how much you might want to yell at me that's what this video is gonna cover and yes I will be shooting 30 frames per second with this bad boy so there are three major categories that I compare all cameras against video quality ease of use and overall ecosystem / upgrade path and let's get to it first up video quality while this isn't gonna be an intensive video in the specs Department I did want

To bring up some of the major differences in recording capabilities between the two cameras because there is normally the gh 5 when I compare the gh 5 to something the gh 5 comes out on top the Gulf is it's on the s-1 h the gh 5 can record it up to 4k 60 frames per second for 208 bit internal and up to cinema 4k 24 frames per second for 2 to 10 bit internal which to this day ranks it among the elite in the camera world and it does all of this with no additional crop who's a pretty beefy all I 400 megabits per second codec it has all of that in there and when you pair

This with an external monitor like the ninja 5 this right here you get even more the s1 H on the other hand oh yeah you can record it up to 6 K 10 bit 24 frames per second internal and it can do cinema 4k 60 frames per second 10 bit it does have an additional crop to make it in to make it roughly aps-c mode when you do that it also has a wide-ranging options in the 5.9 K Department and a host of other frame rates and resolutions I mean this easily easily has the most recording options of any camera that I've ever seen and I've seen a lot of cameras basically the s1h is a

6k / 5k camera and the GH 5 is a 4k camera when it comes to slow-motion they also have access to the variable framerate mode which lets you do both in 1080p up to 180 frames per second the gh 5 is a twenty point three megapixel micro 4/3 sensor with a micro 4/3 lens mount you know I really like it even though a lot of people complain about micro four-thirds the s1h on the other hand has a 24 megapixel full-frame sensor with the Leica L mount and you can see it right there it's it's gorgeous both have incredible in body image

Stabilization and both are using Panasonic's depth from defocus autofocus which we will talk more about later ok that's enough of the specs I just wanted to tell you what each could do but what matters most is how does the image quality actually look this is gonna be tough I mean this is really gonna be tough because I think both cameras look fantastic now I'm gonna borrow quote right now I did not come up with this this is a quote from a couple years ago from one of my favorite YouTube channels called crash show and they called the gh five a

Revolution in a box and I'm definitely I've been stealing that line since then because you buy one of these and you're set the image quality is fantastic you've got anamorphic support good enough dynamic range and beefy enough files that you can push them around and post or match them to just about any other camera when you use the log profile that you can get in here the V log L but and there's just there's no really other way to put this the s1h is nuts like I'm having trouble as I was writing this script out I'm having trouble writing out how I feel

Without just using filler hyperbole the image quality out of this camera is hands-down the best I've ever seen on any camera I've ever used and again I've used a ton of cameras in the past I've even used cinema cameras in the past and this is the best image quality I've ever gotten this is the color science behind Panasonic's high-end very cam cinema camera line and includes their full log profile so this gets full v-log this gets V log L this has even more dynamic range and while I've only recently started dabbling and using log recording profiles and usually they are a huge

Pain in the butt to work with besides Canon C log which was my favorite until now the full V log here is super easy to work with and has insane levels of dynamic range and high light retention it's I'm basically going to stop referring to the s1h as a full frame gh five because it isn't this is a totally new style of camera I mean legitimately there isn't anything else that exists that's like the s1h it truly stands alone and while it is again much more expensive more than three times as expensive as the gh five I do think the price tag is worth it if you need that

Extra oomph and yes again for frame rates and resolutions the s1h trounces the GH five plus the s1h has dual iso architecture built into that sensor so you actually have to base iso's in the cameras for example the g h5 has a base iso of 400 so in an incredibly abbreviated like in a very basic description 400 iso is where you will get the absolute best dynamic range in image quality the s1h has two ways of doing it so if you're using the log profile 640 iso and 4000 will be your base iso and if you're using the standard picture

Profile 100 and 600 will be your base ISO so theoretically at either of those 100 or 600 you will get the same dynamic range and image quality that's nuts and that allows the s1h to absolutely crush the gh 5 and low light capabilities and I mean again as much as I love the gh 5 this is easily the thing it does worse that I will say though and the things that I have done over the last almost two years just bring extra lights image quality is only half of the video quality battle though audio for us online content creators is far more important look if you think image

Quality is on top let me introduce you to my friend that's called online compression that bad boy is going to beat the ever-loving crap out of your beautiful images no matter what camera you use image quality yeah whatever audio let's focus there both of these cameras actually have pretty darn good internal preamps so if you are only going to use the three point five millimeter microphone in Jack which both of these cameras have you will get really good results no matter which camera the s1h does again come out on top here in a couple of ways the GH five

Can only lower its internal audio down to negative 12 decibels or the s1h can go down to negative 18 decibels why that matters is if you've got a sensitive microphone or a powered microphone the s1h also provides power to microphones not 48 volts of phantom power but enough for a less intensive microphone to the plug into that 3.5 millimeter audio jack if you've got a sensitive or powerful microphone you want the camera to do as little of that audio processing as possible so you need its internals down as low as possible and the s1h does in fact do that but it does kind of even

Out if you use my favorite camera accessory ever the d MW XLR one from panasonic now this is a fantastic little vice that plugs into the hot shoe mount of either of these cameras giving you two powered 48 volt phantom power this time XLR port now this is fantastic little device and it works with the both cameras so either camera could get and have gotten amazing audio all of that video quality which is so important in the film making world and middling important in the YouTube world pales in comparison to how easy the camera is to use with all of those algorithms like

All imagine all the algorithms whether it's Instagram Twitter YouTube they're all like constantly stepping on their neck so we gotta like push out that content as fast as possible how easy are these to use well they're both better and worse than each other in different things again different styles of cameras so the way is they are similar is they both have super customizable camera bodies I mean you can basically take either of these bodies and set it up however you want and that is something that I absolutely adore in Panasonic cameras I hate when

Brands lock you into their vision for the camera like they're like oh well our engineers decided that this button needs to do this this button needs to do that period and they don't give you the ability to customize it for example I've got the s1h is the exposure compensation right here and the ISO button this is set to Wi-Fi and this is set the 4k live crowd those are the two modes that I use the most and so I want to use them as quickly as possible so you can just customize all of the buttons they also both have a flip screen so if you are in front of the camera you can monitor

Yourself but this way she does have the far superior screen implementation though because it can do this it can all it can tilt and flip it's the best ever I love it they also like I said earlier they both have fantastic in body image stabilization and when paired with Panasonic lenses both can use dual is technology to give you even more even better fantastic stable results I've stopped using a tripod as I've gone to the g85 and even to the s-1 age so we've got two highly customizable cameras with flip screens and fantastic ibis they only

Have good stuff in common right well here's some honesty the biggest problem with Panasonic cameras is they refuse to accept phase detection autofocus so both of these do use the depth from D focus system which while it is greatly improved in the gh v since released it just it isn't worth using even in this tiny Titan now I do think the s1h continuous autofocus system is much improved and I do think it is better than the gh 5 and something that I will actually probably personally use in the future when I'm outdoors and even here in the studio also it's not just the

Autofocus system where the two cameras differ for physical ease of use I do think the gh 5 comes out on top it's a much lighter much easier to manage camera that also has smaller and easier to manage lenses plus the gh 5 is one of the best built cameras ever made holding it in the hand I love it this thing is just fantastic it is one of the best cameras to ever hold the s1h is built like a tank for both good and ill it's big it's heavy and while it does have certain benefits it's not that comfortable to like handhold here I mean you can do it but it's not as

Comfortable I absolutely prefer the build quality and the build of the gh 5 I actually though think getting usable images out of both cameras is different as well like I said earlier the gh 5 has really awesome image quality I wouldn't have been using it for so long otherwise but the s 1 H is on a different level entirely like I said it has the color size from Panasonic's professional level camera line the VariCam line it's fantastic I've never gotten images like I've gotten out of the S one H in camera before and like I said we've used cinema cameras we've used a ton of cameras here

In the channel but it's not just the image quality as good I mean we wouldn't be mentioning this again and ease of use if it was just that it was good it's crazy easy to get those fantastic colors I'm not a colorist by any stretch of the imagination heck like I said I've only recently started using log format this full V log is currently my favorite picture profile of all time it looks great in both 8 and 10 bit and I cannot wait to see how it looks with the pro res Raw option that is hopefully hopefully coming to the s1h here soon TLDR too long didn't read they both are

Great in different ways however buying a camera is not as easy as just buying the body hey we bought the body now what great we're done right no you're buying into a whole system and while both of these cameras are the same brand they have vastly different systems again the S one H has the Leica L mount which while her AE full-frame rightful frames the best it does mean your options for lenses are much smaller than on the gh 5 there are native lenses and it's small but it is growing and I do like that since my s1 video about six ish months ago we now

Have a full range of Sigma Prime's available with a really nice and affordable price affordable in full-frame mirrorless lens language with a 24 to 70 2.8 coming out here in the near future the rest of the native glass though is crazy expensive and they are not lenses that I would personally invest in I currently have the 24 to 105 f/4 and will likely add the 16 to 35 f/4 when it finally comes out with a sigma primer – thrown in for good measure the jij 5 on the other hand does have that micro 4/3 sensor and mount giving you access to a much more robust and

Established lenses from both Panasonic and Olympus plus one of the big benefits of micro four-thirds is how small the sensor is and how short the flange distance of the mount itself is you can adapt darn near any lens you want to this camera you can adapt almost anything here and use just about any lens if it was designed with a DSLR in mind you can put it on here like it does not cost that much for entry you can also add a speed booster to cheat the sensor size a little bit if you really want a wider field of view along with big those bigger lenses also the gh

5 as an established camera ie older it has several third-party accessories like battery grips and cages ready to go today that you could easily kit it out with now the s1h does have comparable options but there are very expensive options out there right now it will take some time for the lower end items to make it to the market 2300 words later dang one of my longest scripts of all time so what right for the online content creator which of these comes out on top well obviously the s1h is the superior camera like I'm not I said that kind of funny but I'm

Not trying to be sarcastic this beats the gh 5 in practically every conceivable way the image quality is better the recording options are more it can record at higher resolutions the autofocus seems tentatively better the stabilization is better the battery life's better everything is better but I mean it should right it's a $4,000 camera don't even though my wife found that out at the live stream let's keep that amongst ourselves but because of that I have a hard time recommending the s-1 age to the online content creator when compared to the gh 5 this is easily

If you've never heard of this diminishing returns when you start talking about cameras the higher and higher end video cameras you go you have to start paying much more to get smaller and smaller improvements don't get me wrong I love the s1 H and will start using this as my main camera very soon as soon as we're done making a series of videos about it but I have a very specific requirement that this fills unless you find yourself to be like me I will continue recommending the gh 5 like I said in the beginning this is a revolution in a box and for many years

To come this will continue to be the standard powerhouse in the video marketplace whoo but if you like this video and you are looking for more s1h content click here to check out my unboxing and initial impressions video of the s1h click here click here I'll put the s1h click on the s1h to watch that video thanks for watching
