New iPad Pro or Refurbished 2018 iPad Pro?

by birtanpublished on May 11, 2021

Alright you little ungrateful gerbils get out of the comment section complaining about it I don't care but let's just get the old one alright if you don't want a comparison and you just want a straight answer sure by the certified refurbished older iPad from 2018 but if there's some of you on the fence and would like to know my feedback and you would like to know all of the differences between the 2018 iPad pro in the 20/20 iPad pro I'll dive into them for you today so that hopefully you can get the complete picture and know just exactly what you're saving and what you're missing out on if you go with the

Older cheaper iPad let's begin most noticeable difference of course is that camera because the designs are not changing very much this year but for the record you should not expect iPad pro designs to change very much for the next few years yeah Apple doesn't care that you love putting your iPad on your favorite couch and sitting on it all the time it's not bending enough for Apple to consider it a major issue so sorry the durability of the new iPad pro is not any different from the old one and if you take good care of your tech you should have no

Problem with that at all but the camera arrangement on the back grants you access to an ultra wide lens that is capable of shooting 4k at 60 video yes it is 10 megapixels so it's not quite as good as the ultra wide on our iPhones but an option that was there nonetheless and it wasn't there before and honestly after testing out the ultra wide on this iPad for a while it's made me kind of see the standard lens is very very cropped in in a way I'm kind of trying to default to the ultra wide now anytime I open the camera on this thing but cringy Facebook mom's aside of you know

Taking pictures with an iPad it is an excellent viewfinder to have a display this large when you're taking pictures and videos so an improvement nonetheless I appreciate and of course the lidar scanner which at this point is pretty much only good for augmented reality stuff but I will mention the augmented reality differences are noticeable it's especially good at masking out your hand or any objects that come in front of the AR object but more interesting part about it to me is how it registers when your hand is behind the augmented reality object and there's been several

Times I've used those like look at object in AR demos and I'll be toying around with the angles or I'll be changing things and then for a second I will just reach out and try to touch the object even though I know it's not there it's not there drunk you gotta stop listening to the voices but either way it does make a no difference and I personally believe there will be more functions in features for the lidar scanner in time they just don't want to give the iPad pro any photo or video exclusivity that the iPhone doesn't gets because they want

Developers to know hey this lidar scanner helps a lot with AR but yeah I'm sure once the iPhone gets it in the fall it'll probably have some exclusive features that come along with it as well probably things like video bokeh or just improve portrait mode photography things rendering in real time rendering better it's an improvement it may not be a improvement you care about but it's there the microphones have also been improved on the new iPad but honestly the old iPad pro microphones aren't bad so I don't think that's a great reason to spend the extra you know two hundred

And fifty dollars on a new one but some longevity tech specs may be a good reason for you to spend the extra two hundred fifty bucks on a new iPad instead of going certified refurbished because we can now confirm that all the new 20/20 iPad pros have six gigabytes of RAM standard they have Wi-Fi six and improved LTE connectivity so if you care about having the fastest Wi-Fi speeds possible and in the future I think it's very possible we could get even more Mac OS like functionality brought to iPad OS in June maybe having more RAM could end up being a bigger deal than we think it

Is so if you end up going with a certified refurbished iPad from 2018 if you're not getting the one terabyte storage configuration you're gonna have four gigs of RAM which for iOS you know an iPad OS that's fine it gets the job done and at this point I don't think there's anything you can't do with four gigs of RAM on the iPad that you can do with six gigs of RAM on this iPad but who knows if they add some functionality to iPad OS that gives it more access to Pro applications if they're working on Final Cut or logic or something I feel like they are but I could be wrong

There's no leaks or rumors to suggest it I just think if they're releasing the trackpad and keyboard before June they must have something big they want to announce at the conference right so maybe the six gigs of RAM will end up being more important for you but also if you get that five hundred and fifty dollar cheaper 2018 iPad pro you're probably getting a default of 64 gigs of storage whereas this has 128 by default so storage is doubled in the RAM has improved by 50% and also before you say that the a 12z chip is identical to a 12 X it's not it just does not have a

Higher clock speed which for a lot of people that's all that matters but it's very easy to forget that these a series if chips are not just CPU performance it's also about GPU performance and with the a12 Z Apple realized hey we should prioritize sustaining high performance for longer periods of time and improving GPU capability rather than just make the already insanely high clock speed of the a 12 X even higher so a lot of people feel like they shouldn't upgrade because the CPU performance is the same but in all honesty I think it's perfectly reasonable that Apple did not increase

The CPU performance because no one was complaining about that in the first place no one was like oh the a 12 X chip is just too dang slow I wish we had an a 13 X chip then I could finally edit all of my 8k @ 60 videos yeah no one was bringing that up okay so if no one can beat the a 12x chip like no one else in the ARM architecture is able to top that performance why would you need to then go higher why do you need to do that if you can just focus on making the insane speeds it already has prolong and lasts a lot longer and yeah boosting GPU performance on the

Side which this did in Geekbench score much closer to 10000 where is the 2018 iPad pro that scored closer to nine thousand so it's not identical they're just prioritizing other things besides the CPU benchmark because no one was complaining about the CPU speed so why update it but yeah outside of that I mean you have a few other things like the ultra wideband chip which the new iPhones have as of 2019 but there's still no features that really take advantage of it right now other than just being able to you know point your device at another device to prioritize

Airdrop functionality but I'm sure there's more features coming to the ultra wideband chip likely related to air tags once those become available so there's a lot of exclusive features this iPad I think we'll probably get once other stuff comes out whether it's light our capability or ultra wideband support like there's other things coming but yeah in its current state I would completely admit that anyone with a 20-18 iPad pro already you really don't need to update to this one there's very little differences there's very little reasons unless you're like a die-hard

Apple sheep that cannot stand having a device that's not the latest and greatest that camera bump is not the new camera bump come on I get that I've been there myself and I'm kind of going through that dilemma right now I really don't need this iPad I really don't this one is fine there's nothing wrong with this one but of course the good news is that that magic keyboard with trackpad case that everyone wants to get as soon as possible and it's still not coming out until May which sucks yeah that's compatible with the old 2018 iPad so if

You want to have that keyboard and trackpad case you are not required to buy this one at all Apple pencil support is still there so that hasn't changed the displays are identical it's still 120 Hertz it's still true tone it's still LCD and I'd honestly be pretty cautious recommending any of you guys wait for the next iPad pro that could be coming at the end of this year for one the leakers in the analysts that are saying that the new iPad pro is coming at the end of this year they're the same guys who said this one was coming out last October so they were way off on

Their timeline they could be wrong again or they could end up being right but if they end up being right I don't think the differences are going to be very major because all that's rumored for the next one is 5g support which means it's gonna be more expensive do you want to wait around for half a year just to pay more for a iPad and that's a cellular option so it's not even gonna be a standard feature and the a 14x chip which again there's very little functionality and there's very little limitations when it comes to the a 12 X and Z chip so there's no software

Developers right now they're like man I want to bring this app I want to bring this program to my iPad but the CPU and GPU just suck and they need to be better that's not really the case right now so waiting around just for a slightly better CPU or to pay more for a 5g iPad I I don't think is gonna be worth it and if you're talking about the mini LED iPad which again would just be a dynamic range boost it would not change the fundamental look and feel of an iPad it would just happen to have better color accuracy that rumor is for 2021 not 2020 so if you're willing to wait around

Another year yeah I mean sure there will probably be new iPads by next year but if you have not bought a 20-18 iPad pro and you're in the market considering the upgrades we got out of this one it could be decent for a lot of you but absolutely keep in mind that certified refurbished option because you could save a lot of money that way and let me know which iPad you would go with by hitting me up over on Twitter and joining my discord but realize I'm saying that to be polite I honestly don't care and I don't want to hear from you that this one isn't worth it so

Please stop talking to me okay this is your help shape here I'll see you in the next one
