Must Watch Video for Ford 7.3L and 6.0L Injection Concepts & Terms

Brian's mobile one hey guys working on a 6.0 liter diesel on a Ford can be a little bit intimidating and part of that is being able to speak the language this is just a quick video to go over some of the acronyms these are the things you need to know in order to speak the

Language these diesel engines have a different kind of a fuel injection system than you'll find almost anywhere outside of minimus starter cap they call this system or the hydraulic electric unit injection system qyz a lot easier

To see these things are kind of tongue twisters that's why we have all these acronyms fake them fic em is the fuel injection control module this vehicle already has a PCM or a powertrain control module but it's got a special

Computer that runs the injectors tells them when to turn on when to turn off again now while these acronyms can be a little intimidating I'll walk you through it and make it really easy basically you've got engine oil that's

Being pumped up from the oil pump to a high pressure oil pump that's what hpop stands for but it's pumped up by the low pressure oil pump and that pressure is used to drive a piston cylinder Ram whatever you want to call it basically

It'll take in a charge of fuel in the bottom half of the injector and then the intensifier half of the injector the engine oil half will be fired by it looks like headphones on the top of it if you ask me you know like those

Headphones that you have for music basically one of them will pull full valve one way and it'll put up a well pressure into the top of that thing and that wild pressure will push down on a piston and that piston will push down on

The fuel and squirt it out the nozzle of the injector and then the other side will turn it off and then basically the piston will go back up by our spring and then it'll start the cycle all over again it'll just go through the eight

Different cylinders and firing order so the victim is what controls that the thick fic M is the fuel injection control module this is located just underneath Sur cooling tech open tank so you've got

Your turbo you've got a coolant tank and then you've got your master cylinder the victim is it's right up underneath its melted at an angle on the jar on top of the back of the driver's side of the valve cover ICP or the injection control

Pressure sensor it should have an S on the back of it the ICP is on the dry passenger side valve cover and it's just a little pressure sensible 3-wire sense there on the end there and unfortunately unlike the newer ones like your 2005 and

Newer they're really easy to get to on the other ones that are backed by the thick of and they're clearer than heck back there these have oil manifolds if you pull off the valve cover on a 6-litre you'll see what looks kind of

Like a funky manifold like an intake manifold or exhaust manifold and what the way they did that instead of doing the common rail is to give better pressures while idling so it has some room to move around and just kind of

Equalize the ICP is looking for 500 psi to tell them to turn on if you don't have 500 psi in there that it won't have enough to open the injectors the injectors on these have to have at least 30 100 that's 3100 psi so if you have 5

Million injectors the intensifier the piston thing I was telling you about uses engine oil to push down on it they multiply the pressure by seven because they've got you know do that hydraulic leverage or whatever you've got a big

Thing here and then a little thing here so one two three four five six seven you know seven times is what's going down in there so if you have 500 psi that's enough here in this the ICP to be able to drive this is what the guts of the

Injector by the way this would be the intensifier body and then you'd have your nozzle and they kind of screw together like that kind of overlap so you've got a little fuel Inlet then you've got an o-ring

Here here where the fuel goes in well the fuel goes up into here and then goes down here it's left and then goes down then you got a little needle here so this guy's got a spring that helps to pull it back up and this one's got a

Spring it helps to push it back down so in order to overcome this little pencil and the nozzle and get it to sneak by and feel out of it you have to have 500 psi as I say so 5 times 7 is 35 so if you throw on the zeros you got 3500 psi

When you add injector nozzle which is greater than 3,100 which is needed by 400 in order to get that sucker to go so what's an IP are an IPR is an injection pressure regulator where this guy is located is if you pull the turbo off it

Would be on the right-hand side back here so your high pressure oil pump and these guys are married basically they're stuck together and the IPR has a it's like the pool filter you know in their swimming pool or something like that the

Filter screen for the engine oil going into the IDR basically catches all the crud or any other garbage before it gets into the valve body of it and this is just an electromagnetic thing that can move forward or backward and give your

High pressure oil pump the right pressure close this closed this injector control pressure it's a 35% that's the number you want to see if it's all the way down to 15 or all the way up to 85 those are the max

And minimal values high pressure oil pump can go upward north of 3,000 psi if it needs to think about high rpms and stuff like that and it doesn't have any kind of particularly here's its gear driven off of the camp's

Yeah when I got into this far had been worked on by another shop that didn't know what they were doing a technician a shop has no cognizance but the technician that was working on it just made all kinds of footballs and broke

Stuff and just didn't do a good job you know facing up oh my god but that's where the IPR is the STC but the snap the connect fittings was really great for Ford for manufacturing these things together it's just like a quick

Disconnect just like on your air compressor when you click the hose onto the Chuck it's built like that but it's not as robust as that would be it basically has these really thin sheet metal clips that hold it in place

And you can imagine with the high pressure oil pump but now 3,000 some odd psi that could that could be a problem for metal fatigue over time and that's what happens is these fail so here's what the old one looks like here's what

That all the STC connector it looks like and then this is what the new one looks like the new one has a special plastic kit all this stuff to be able to do it right I'll do another video on that later anyway these are the acronyms that

You need to know so hydraulic electric unit injection every time this thing goes down it fires just one time on a lot of electronic injection systems that have fuel directly over it they can pulse like

Seven times per cycle or however many times recycle this only does it once is this one unit unit of injection and it can be a little or a lot but they based on one of these little headphone electro magnet the magnet things are doing it

There's a little bolt that goes through here you got a little nut on one side and then head on the other and then you got a spool valve that goes in here and then a full valves got a fat side and it's got a thin

Side so the fat side is the one that opens it up and then the thin side closes that if you look at it from this side they're just a little brown thing a little it just runs this little bulb out back and forth and then you've got a
