MSI PS42 Prestige Review – MSI’s First Ultrabook

by birtanpublished on May 18, 2021

This is Lisa from mobile tech review and now for something different at least for MSI the gaming laptop manufacturer they also do some mobile workstations which are often kind of repurposed while gaming laptops this is the first ultrabook it's the MSI PS 42 prestige so and then like prestige your figure is supposed to be a nice Ultrabook price isn't too bad though considering that 899 to $12.99 depending configuration we'll talk about that inside you have Intel eighth generation quad core 15 want ultrabook CPUs because this is a 14-inch ultrabook this is not a gaming laptop you can get it with Intel

Integrated graphics on the lower end model or NVIDIA MX 150 dedicated graphics for the higher-end $12.99 model that's pretty low-end dedicated graphics but hey it's better than nothing it's good for older and more casual games certainly you've got a full HD display inside a backlit keyboard and a casing then you might say beauty is only skin-deep but I would say that this is not the best-looking Ultra but it looks a little bit dated with this brushed aluminum kind of chassis a very industrial bottom side where they're not trying to pretty up any of the feet the

Screws or anything like that but inside we have some pretty impressive cooling things in fact and this I really knows how to cool a gaming laptop so this is a walk in the park for them and some pretty good performance when you look at it now what is refreshing is that this has plenty of ports it's not well those port constrained laptops that only has a few USB C port hello macbook pro hello Dell XPS 13 9370 this one has a full size SD card slot HDMI on board though they say it only just drives a display of 4k and 34 it's not 60 Hertz but you have USB C for that you do have two USB

C gen 1 ports on board not Thunderball 3 though and you've got USB a poor it's it's nice and an Ethernet dongle in the box as well and given the fact that we have USB C you can use docks and adapters including Legrand's new USBC dock they're the sponsor of our video thanks Legrand for that this is the coolest thing I have ever seen apt to say as USB C docks Co you know the base dock module which adds HDMI VGA and DisplayPort supporting 4k adds 60 Hertz in case you need that since the laptop isn't doing that it's HDMI port and it's like Legoland

Here it's called you get other modules you'd have the ten thousand two hundred milliamp lithium ion power a bank that you can charge it that plugs right into the dock and then there's a secondary dock connector that gives you Gigabit Ethernet and USB a ports and it also has USB C pass-through charging as well so kind of a pretty cold dock the link is in the description back to our laptop review so there are two configurations like I said and you can see on screen what the specs difference are basically 8 vs 16 gigs around 256 versus 512 gig SSD and whether or not has dedicated

Graphics matter which way you go you're going to get the same full HD IPS mat non-touch display if you wanted a touchscreen if you wanted 4k well you can stop watching now oh well but it does help keep the price down and this laptop in some ways is about trade-offs the other trade-off here is that we have Intel AC 630 168 Wi-Fi instead the usual ACAT 265 so that's about half the potential maximum speeds 433 megabit per second little surprise there because you know msi typically used as fast Wi-Fi cards for the gaming laptops where latency does matter more it's not the

End of the world I'm just mentioning it you could always go ahead and try to upgrade it yourself after the fact if you were bothered by it the PS 42 prestige is available from well most NSI retailers ours was provided by computer upgrade King cuck USA they've been providing some of our gaming laptop review loners in well obviously some of our ultra book review loners to the chassis on this does have some flex this goes along with like the msi gs70 recently reviewed a thin and light gaming laptop full-on gaming laptop and there's gonna be a PS 65 which is

Basically the designer kind of portable laptop version in white instead of in black and gold to get it so thin so light and this thing is 2.6 for pounds which is 1.19 kilograms and 15.9 millimeters then well they use very lightweight materials aluminum so there's a little flex oh you press on the lid you can torsion it and on the body panels a little bit so it's a different design philosophy obviously from something like the Dell XPS 13 that's built like a tank or the 13-inch MacBook Pro or the 12-inch MacBook those laptops the razor blade stealth some of

Its competitors but the selling point here again is if you get for the code for the higher I want you to get the Nvidia dedicated graphics so I leave it up to you how you feel about that but for a 14 inch laptop I can tell you it feels incredibly light when you pick it up it almost makes it think of the LG gram and that is certainly a pleasure and I'm not so worried about the durability to be honest just some people have a preference for built like a tank or not it has those barely-there bezels that are pretty trendy and even the bottom bezel is pretty small and that's

Where your chin cam is a 720p one it's not that bad actually though the keyboard is backlit in white slightly lilac II white which is good because it provides slight bit of color contrast with those silvery light colored keys I like the keyboard feel a lot it's nice its tactile it's well damped it's a very pleasant ample sized keyboard and type on since this is MSI they always like to play with key locations a little bit so it like the FN keys and a little bit of a weird place the volume up volume down and brightness controls are mapped to the arrow keys like they would be on

When they're gaming laptops it's not in the top FN multimedia room I think those are the things you can get used to the key masking also has some of the largest letters masked on there I've ever seen on a laptop keyboard that's neither here nor there you can decide whether you like the aesthetics of it or not the good news and the bad news about the trackpad the trackpad is not as bad as some MSI gaming laptops where you have accidental whoopsie is happening in very unpredictable behavior this one is decent it's not great I don't love it this is not Dell XPS 13 level good

Trackpad at all but it's okay but the problem is it's really small now I'm not particularly into those humongous trackpads like Apple gives us what the MacBook Pro I still don't know why it's that big right and even HP with respect to laptops they expect or x-360 has trackpad big enough that you could fit an iPhone in that area but this really is truly kind of cramped and it's made worse by the fact that the fingerprint scanner is embedded in the upper left corner of the trackpad so it's using up some of the real estate and I find myself accidentally touching over there

Instead now this is an ultrabook this is not a gaming laptop even despite the MSI heritage here which means we have 15 watt Ultrabook Intel 8th gen KB like our CPUs you got your choice of the Core i5 or the core i7 either way you got quad core going on performance is very on these and it scores well on benchmarks again you have your choice of just Intel UHD 620 integrated graphics are the optional switchable graphics with the NVIDIA GeForce NX 150 graphics which is a very low-end dedicated GPU we've seen it in the huawei mate Book Pro X model that it competes with these

Suits Zenbook ux302 them but it's said not to give you a little bit of extra oomph to say playing casual or older games or games like 6 that don't depend a lot on graphics we're playing Skyrim or BioShock Infinite something like that it's certainly gonna help it'll give a little bit extra improvement to export times if you're using Adobe Premiere it's you know Photoshop a teeny bit again not a gaming laptop but for most people who don't need serious heavy duty performance you're not doing scientific analysis you're not doing CAD you're not doing pro or semi-pro video and this is

Your everyday nice powerful ultrabook that's good enough what is pretty special here is MSI nose cooling I mean they do a good job at their gaming laptops on here they've applied that to something that's much less challenging because it's a much less heat intensive kind of product here when you've got lower water to CPUs and GPUs and they've got some pretty impressive cooling here two decent-sized fans inside you've got three heat pipes and it does manage to keep his cool and where that makes a difference it might not be in the world's fastest score

You've ever seen a geek bench for this class of laptop but it manages to keep the clock speeds up if you are doing something like playing Skyrim or six which is nice to see some ultra ebooks that they may do well on benchmarks as those on for short period of time but once you have them doing an intensive task for any period of time they slow down some not so much here so good selling point there the display on this has good metrics as it should the thousand-dollar ultrabook segments typically have very nice displays because your money is not

Going into high-end D GPUs or even more powerful processors and that sort of thing again no touch screen option no 4k option oh well but for the average person probably 1080p is fine it doesn't really bother me that much the color gamut on this is perfectly good you've got just about full srgb coverage a little better than 75% of Adobe RGB which is nice contrast is pleasing on it it's it's all good it's very nice-looking experientially when you look at it msi also has a color tuning utility that can help you pick the color calibration sort of

Profile that you like out of the box it's the usual to cool color calibration without fiddling with it at all which is typical for a laptop so you can adjust that yourself and warm it up if you want if you're trying to do something like serious photo or video editing the only disappointing thing about the display is the brightness at 248 nits usually we see something closer to 300 s in the premium ultrabook space battery inside is 50 watt hour it comes with a 65 watt charger 45 would be standard for an ultra boat but since we have the end

Video graphics here and they want to speed up charging for you you get a 65 watt charger battery life is pretty good actually with the Nvidia graphics even though they're low-end I didn't have the greatest expectations for battery life but it's been a solid seven and a half hours with light to moderate use and not gaming not exporting video those kind of things but doing some Photoshop raw photo file and it's that sort of thing streaming some video doing your usual ms-office your web browsing all that sort of thing so it's pretty decent there this was not one of the most

Entertaining laptops to well work on once you get inside much like MSI so they're super thin and like gaming laptops the stealth line for example get the bottom cover off you unscrew about 12 Phillips head screws that's not so bad they have the factory seal one there's one screw hidden under here msi says that's the light you know if somebody messed with it from the factory it's supposedly won't mess with your warranty that is unless you break the laptop well thing I do want to notice how tall the rubber feet are here and that's also part of their intelligent

Cooling design lifts it up so it can intake air here without being stifled by whatever it's sitting on okay so you would think you unscrew the screws and take it off notice this extra piece here well the back is a wrap around here and to actually unlatch that it's much easier if you take off the little trim cover piece that's on the top side over here not the end of the world but there it is once you get inside you're greeted with well two fans which is really nice and if we took out the motherboard here which we are not going to do this as this is just a

Review loaner you would see that there are three heat pipes total that are cooling our CPU and GPU what's unfortunate here is yes your Wi-Fi card is accessible pretty easily which is good in case you want upgrade to a better intel Wi-Fi card but you have to the motherboard over to get to the m2 SSD slot this is a SATA 3 m2 SSD not the faster PCIe nvme kind that you would normally see usually in a laptop in this price range again cutting some corners here to give you the Nvidia higher-end GPU and the have the price not get too

Crazy I guess but when you're up against the huawei mate Book Pro X well and that one has a faster SSD that hurts a little bit this has one RAM slot here so there's that means single channel RAM all the way you can pair up two RAM modules in other words and 16 gigs is the maximum that you can put in since you have one slot it's ddr4 Ram speakers are here they're 2 watt down firing speakers and they're pretty average for ultrabooks not too too tinny but certainly not loaded with bass but a lot enough to fill a room at sound so that's the NS IPS 42 prestige Ultrabook their

First ultra buck and like I said sometimes beauty isn't just skin deep it's what's inside that I like a lot of others I do like the display I like the keyboard a lot I like the horse power and performance and I like the cooling the looks I mean I've seen worse it's not terrible it's not great the port selection on this is pretty good as well a few places where they cheaped out though the the SSD being SATA 3 and not nvme we would expect the faster kind of m2 SSD technology inside the somewhat lower end Intel Wi-Fi card but still overall it's a good first attempt by MSI
