MSI GS75 Stealth (2019) Core i9 & RTX 2080 Max-Q Review

by birtanpublished on February 9, 2021

This is Lisa from mobile tech review and what only five pounds but 17 inches in terms of screen size and has a heck of a lot of horsepower inside its the msi gs70 five stealth thin be hard to review the GS 65 stealth and in the until 8th generation so this formerly at the 17.3 inch model with Intel ninth generation CPUs inside Nvidia art TX graphics and even more interestingly and you might think inadvisable big this is a core I 9 – 99 ATH so that's a core I and I with 8 cores not six like the last gen which was kind of disappointment at core I 9 it didn't have any more cortisone in core i7 and but given how thin how light

This is is this the George Foreman grill we're gonna find out now so the GS 75 stealth in is one of those premium if not you can call it boutique thin and light gaming laptops I mean gosh it is one of the very lightest among the 17 inch models at five pounds which is two point two eight kilograms and it's pretty darn thin as well our review loaner was provided by computer upgrade King and their URL is cuck USA you can get it down in the description if you're interested so they can do things like set you up over the second SSD if you want you get the idea so yeah check them

Out they have improved the GS series over the course of time so it's a little less flexi a little bit more rigid you have aluminum panels everywhere it's not that unibody really super rigid razorblade pro 17-inch kind of feel to it but it's not so super flexy or anything anymore I have no complaints with it aesthetically it's up to you as to which you like better there's always the Asus rogue Zephyrus with the oddball front shifted keyboard on it but a very pretty lid design of course the razor blade which typically costs a bit more you get the idea and then the more

Affordable ballpark but still relatively thin and light as MSI's own GE 75 rate are also available in a 15 inch size if you prefer that one packs full r-tx instead of the max q graphics that we have in this model so have your choice of RT X 2070 max Q RT X 2080 max you and probably like last generation RTX 2016 fold GPU option available the CPUs have been refreshed to Intel ninth gen which is still part of the coffee like family 45 watt typical gaming and mobile workstation sort of CPUs and this time around we have not just the core i7 97 58 which is a respectable 6 core CPU

But we have that 99 80 h8 core 16 thread CPU so now that the Corp counts gone up it gets more interesting to consider that core I 9 the challenge here is well it's thermally constrained obviously this is a very thinner laptop there's not a lot of room for cooling inside so how does it do we'll get to that in just a minute but let's talk about some of the other core specs given that this is a high-end laptop it starts around $2,500 with the r-tx 2070 max-q and $3,000 with the 2080 max-q that does get you 32 gigs a dual-channel ddr2 NT 666 megahertz ram and a 512 gig nvme SSD the

28 Emacs queuing ours by the way looks to be a 90 watt because it's clock set 990 megahertz with a boost to twelve hundred and thirty megahertz it has a full HD matte IPS non-touch display 144 hard so it's your only display option this is how we've seen gaming laptops roll lately I know I wish it had it at least a wqhd display option if not 4k especially for you Pro Apps users it's a pretty decent display in fact that's the same Chinmay display in ours that we had in the msi ge70 5 raiders now a big laptop manufacturers sometimes sorts from different panel manufacturers

Because they have needed a lot of displays in bulk so if you get in AU Optronics or something like that hey don't kill the messenger just tell me what we had inside it has very good contrast in this display it has MSI's usual color utility which is pretty decent for calibration a little too blue a little too cool but very bright its 385 nits I mean wow especially for a gaming laptop usually you don't see that because they're trying really hard to madly conserve battery power it does have Nvidia Optimus which does help with battery power so there's no G

Singh here no switchable Hardware MUX and switch between G sink and optimist like we saw Isuzu with the rogue Zephyrus for a while that's okay because they said on my laptops typically are geared towards not just people who want a game because then you could just get one of those big desktop replacement wanted to leave it there all the time but this is geared towards people who are taking this probably on the road maybe using as your main machine maybe also using it for pro apps like video editing your 3d modeling and rendering and that sort of thing so yeah

I'm fine with that ports here are quite good despite the fact that is quite thin and we have not only Thunderbolt 3 which of course can get on something from where the razor blade pro 17 but not on the radar GE 75 and on Anita Seuss rogue Zephyrus s so that's welcome and you have a second USB C port as well on top of that you even have Ethernet it's killer a 2500 eternity of HDMI could drive a 4k display at 60 Hertz and a micro SD card slot which is better than no SD card slot at all and a nice handful of USB a 3.2 ports as well keyboard on this is

The usual SteelSeries backlit travels a little on the low side but not egregiously low not absurdly low it's better than the Razer Blade certainly in terms of key travel and tactile feel the keys have a nice spring its perky RGB backlighting and you have a very wide Microsoft precision trackpad so yay MSI no longer has crappy trackpads happy about that so how about performance and how about thermals well yeah as you might guess a core I 9 with full 8 core is going on here and squeezed in such a skinny place with the high end GPU we have the RT X 28 X Q in

Ours is a recipe for throttling and that's what this one does I just you reap a store get it repay stood even though that's challenging you'll see the internals you actually have to remove the entire motherboard just to get the heat sinks and fans or just go at the core i7 much much better idea particularly with that RT X 2080 which is going to generate the most heat I did see thermal throttling I actually saw lower frame rates in games like Far Cry new dawn which is pretty piggish and pretty demanding then I did with a core i7 in RTX 2080 max-q say in the essence

Rogue zephyrus s the same thing is true for battlefield 5 now we were playing on high with both directs directx12 and DX are enabled or you know the vidya d LSS reflections that sort of thing and the frame rates are a little bit lower by a 5 to 10 frames compared to the competition with the core i7 because we saw a lot of thermal throttling so yeah hardware and info 64 is great but it shows you the max temperature that you've hit so what if you're playing the game and that only happens for 5 seconds or something like that it can be

Misleading so I broke out Intel X to you because you get a graph over time to see where the temperatures are in for something like battlefield 5 it was really running hot and high and it was thermal throttling through much of the gameplay for something a little easier like Shadow the Tomb Raider playing on high and we also tested on very high which is the highest you can go with the Tomb Raider it wasn't quite so bad there we average about 85 centigrade for the core temperatures but for more demanding games it was certainly 95 97 and throttling so how that surface

Temperatures it's been it's light its metal you know yeah it's going to be hot the bottom rear center area underneath where the CPU and the GPU are and gets very hot it's about 57 centigrade which is about 133 degrees Fahrenheit that means you don't want to touch it you'll touch it and you're gonna say ouch so obviously when you're gaming put it on a laptop cooler even a passive on on a hard surface don't ever put it on a blanket when you're playing games the top side which is given the motherboard is upside down the fans are actually there so you have a little buffer in

Terms of space between the processor and you actually wasn't as bad it gets toasty to the touch you but not burning burning out aha the speakers on this is a thin and light laptop but it is a gaming laptop so you know it can go either way well it goes towards the lacking in base a little bit tinny you've got 2 2 watt speakers facing downwards stereo speakers and the volume is pretty good on this but there's really not a whole lot of bass going on are you gonna want to wear your headphones because getting back to the heat at least was our core I know ma you

Will hear those fans and there are three of them and they are kind of high-pitched not like drives you crazy like the old razor blade 14 used to but they're pretty high pitch and they're pretty lap when you're gaming even just running it on the auto setting if you put on cooler boost and really max was fails as we like yeah so you're gonna wanna use headphones when you're gaming now on to the good part battery life the South has been among the better when it comes to battery life for these thin and light gaming laptops you have an 82 on our battery which is a good

Capacity batteries right up there with what Razer is doing in the competition and you've got Nvidia Optimus to help so when you're not doing things that need a dedicated GPU you can run on integrated graphics so we've found that battery life is between five and six hours 115 it's a brightness with Wi-Fi on and active it makes a web surfing some social networking a little photoshopping a little Microsoft Office not trying hard just leaving it on the balance Mon you could stretch it a bit longer if you put it on the balanced mode no matter which configuration of the GS 75 you get

You'll get a 230 watt relatively speaking compact adaptor that seems a little low but it's just barely enough to keep the machine powered without discharging when you're gaming to take the bottom cover off you remove the visible Phillips head screws there are quite a lot of them you can find all of them except for the one that's hidden under the usual MSI factory steal stickers so just feel with your finger where the depression is and stick your Phillips head screwdriver in there they say they do this to let you know nobody else is tampered with it and not to

Prevent you from going inside so metal covering is you can hear it's the underside does wrap around the back it's still pretty easy to get off though so no big deal any when you get inside you're like oh noes alright I already picked at this son but we have this which is probably both heat and electrical shielding because the tolerances are so thin I bet it's to make sure that the metal bottom doesn't short anything that's on your motherboard here so they've kindly at least left the 2 m dot 2 SSD bays open so these are my two slots for your SSD

Here's a fast nvme SSD we have a one term bike Western Digital in ours because this is a higher in configuration battery takes up most of this area by the palm rest which is pretty much par for the course and our stereo speakers are flanking it and down firing and my side loves their triple fan cooling so we got to going over here and we got a single one over here and exhausted both out the rear and out the sides which is a good thing and it sucks in from the bottom like most game laptops do which means don't play games while sitting on a quilt or comforter if

You want to get into everything else's and here carefully peel this stuff up it is sticky and because the laptop does get hot on the bottom it will continue to get stickier with a sub I appealed that most of it let's go for the rest of it you can see it's got some adhesion going here and there's nothing here anyway you do gain access to the Intel socketed Wi-Fi card right here 95/60 AC Wi-Fi card and just keep peeling a little bit more here carefully okay so many things hiding but trust me really it's not if you want to get to the RAM slots it's the usual MSI's stealth in

Thing where you're gonna have to remove the motherboard and flip it over to get to the two RAM slots so that's the msi gs70 5 stealth in with the Intel ninth generation CPUs available inside now and of course in video RTX graphics max Q for the 2070 and the 2080 and it's a nice enough looking package and certainly you've got a lot of ports here you have Thunderbolt 3 which not all of the competitors surprisingly in this price range have and I would not particularly recommend that core I 9 if you are gonna be gaming though maybe 4 Pro apps use because the sustain CP uses

CPU usage isn't quite as high there but it was I've found there's enough thermal throttling going on that the advantage of the chorion over the core 7 isn't that great but with a core i7 and this is certainly a viable player at least for mobile tank review be sure to subscribe to our youtube channel for more cool tech videos and thumbs up if you like this vid
