MSI GS65 Stealth Thin Review – 2019 NVIDIA RTX Model

This is Lisa from mobile tech review and it's back and as you would hope and expect it's even better it was a great laptop last year this is the msi gs70 so a genius 75 stealth in which is the 17.3 inch version this is the 15.6 inch version we'll be reviewing that too but the specs are the same so it's new this year nvidia r-tx graphics cards your choice of and our TX 2060 2070 max QR 2080 max q no matter which one you go with you're gonna have an Intel Core i7 – 8750 h6 Core 45 watt CPU which is the same as last generation we're still on Intel coffee-like CPUs same to m2 SSD slots same to ram slots all that other

Stuff but it's a couple more differences we're going to talk about it now so as ever even among the very thin and light 15-inch gaming laptops this is one of the lightest four point one nine pounds which is 1.9 kilograms given the amount of performance inside that's pretty darn impressive we're talking Dell XPS 15 level of portability here with a lot more graphics performance inside so the casing is unchanged from last year I'm not going to spend a whole lot of time reira viewing the things that have not changed from last year with this the the black finish which is

Very attractive to show fingerprints the nice kind of darkish gold accents on the sides give it a classy look it still doesn't have the same kind of high-end classy chassis looking thing that the Razer Blade 15 has or a 15-inch MacBook Pro or maybe even a Dell XPS 15 but it looks pretty darn good compared to most gaming laptops certainly in fact it doesn't scream gaming laptop even the MSI logo on the lid is that kind of tasteful bronzy gold instead of something you know light up neon green or red or whatever you get the idea just like last year you get the Core i7 CPU

Inside which is a six core CPU like I said there's no core I nine option here that you would find say on the gigabyte Aero 15 that we reviewed already with our TX graphics inside Oradell XPS 15 I'm totally down with that I'm ok with that core i9 performance isn't a whole lot more architectural e very similar to a nice but the heat generation really becomes an issue so what's the point of putting that CPU in there if you're only gonna have to throttle it back a whole lot it's marketing and nothing more so good with that like I said you have your

Choice of three different r-tx cards the 2060 is a full r-tx the 2070 and the 2080 aren't the max q lower power versions same thing we saw last year because thin and light jassi's they just don't have enough cooling for the full mobile versions of the cars that you would find in bigger gaming laptops like ms i's own GE 65 and 75 raider we also reviewed the GE 75 by the way you're not miss even huger chassis laptops they have stiffened up the chassis which is a good thing something that folks didn't like especially given the premium price point this starts at around 2100 dollars

And goes up from there ours is nominally $2,700 the flex because when they make something this thin and light well the panel's can't be very thick and very heavy can I well they have firmed it up so there's no more creaking in the palm rest and why you can push in a little a little bit that's not unusual for a very thin and light laptop it feels a little more robust and confidence-inspiring and appropriate for the price big changes inside not so many except for that RTX graphics card update one thing that I'm a little disappointed at is a lot of the

Configuration started with a 512 gigabyte m2 nvme SSD last year and this time because r-tx cars are a little more expensive they've cut back to a 256 gigabyte drive on and many of the available models there is only one model that actually ships with a 512 gig SSD currently from the factory amongst 6 or 7 variants that msi offers that said our model came from computer upgrade king chuck usa.com they're one of the online resellers of gaming laptops so they can do upgrades for you so if you want to get dual channel RAM if you want to get 32 gigs of ram if you want a 2 terabyte

Nvme SSD you can do that just by ordering it through them makes life easier if you don't want to do it yourself the other standard feature right down to the I same identical panel is a 15.6 inch 144 Hertz fast response display 7 millisecond response time so an IPS display not TN so no mediocre viewing angles again it's the same as last year's Full HD with all these r-tx laptops out of the gate they're just offering them with full HD displays even though they could drive much more powerful at this place

Happily it does have HDMI 2.0 that can drive a 4k monitor at 60 Hertz and it has a mini DisplayPort 1.4 as well so if you want to do higher resolution gaming you can plug in an external monitor and do that speaking of those ports they are pretty plentiful on here we have those display alcohol it's impressive is for a chassis this small that there are that many ports pretty much anything you want except for an SD card slot is here including Thunderbolt 3 with the USBC connector and that's the full 4 lane for those who want to use Thunderbolt 3 doc sorry GPUs and get the maximum

Throughput we have USB a 3.1 points as you would expect as well and the usual audio jacks just like last year we have the same SteelSeries perky RGB backlit keyboard it's low travel pretty low travel boy but it has fairly good tactile feel a nice bounce back so it's not that bad to type on before we talk about the trackpad let's just sticker Shane MSI a little bit because obviously this will be a much more attractive laptop if you didn't have all these stickers this one's really easy to remove over here these a little bit less so ok onto the trackpad this is a

Microsoft precision trackpad Bank God the days of MSI is not so good track pads are gone it's obviously very wide it it works pretty well not the ultimate best I would say the Dell XPS 15 in the Razer Blade 15 still have a even better track Padma this is pretty darn good speaking of the audio jacks as always I use their ESS Sabre hi-fi audio DAC which means headphone audio is pretty good and you have separate headphone and mic jacks on this the speakers are C usual in the hemacue audio and their Dino audio branded speakers – 2 watt stereo speakers and given the small size

Chassis there's not a lot of room for goofy drivers here the speaker audio is it you know you're not going to want to play a real exciting game and listen to the speaker audio if you can help it especially because fan noise will be a bit of an issue you'll want to use those headphones or external speaker setup now for those ports is also Gigabit Ethernet e 25 hundred killer Ethernet that's pretty unusual in a small chassis like this we see this in a few laptops in this size class but still that's pretty cool for Wi-Fi it is the killer 18:50 iCard which is actually a

Rebranded intel 95/60 AAC card with killer software so it's pretty good let's put it that way until cards are good now let's talk about the internals a bit and we're gonna take it apart while we do that but we can't take everything apart very easily as we'll find out to get inside you unscrew 15 Phillips head screws they're all pretty visible except for the one that's under the anti-tamper sticker if you get it straight from msi computer upgrade King has already opened up ours to upgrade the RAM in the SSD on it to higher capacity so they put their sticker on

Top and then you work your way around with a guitar pick kind of pry tool and it comes off nice open ventilation area right here that's good to see so inside there's a whole lot of mylar there huh well here we have three fans total that's what mattes eyes been doing with their cooler boost Trinity so you got two for the GPU one for the CPU it is good to see that we have outlets both on the rear and on the side so also in small laptops you don't see that and from here it goes downhill compared to the competition this one is much more of a pain in the neck to upgrade so we peel

Off the mylar which isn't too terribly hard and there's the motherboard upside down which MSI has been doing with their stealth products for some time now unfortunately so you don't have direct access to your RAM slots or to your SSDs from this side what you would have to do is remove the motherboard seat unscrews the screws that hold it down be very careful with these delicate little ribbon cables these are the kind that you flip up the connector on so you can pull out the connectors right here just to do those upgrades so yeah you know if you if you're a do-it-yourselfer then

You're probably gonna be more into the razor blade the gigabyte arrow the suits rogue products instead of this particular model so performance and thermals both are not unexpected which is to say we have the top-of-the-line with the art TX 2080 max-q graphics card inside and the performance numbers are very good they are not quite as good as the razorblade 15 with our TX 2080 max-q that we reviewed razor knows how to push a laptop let's put it that way but it's fairly close now you're gonna see thermal throttling when you're playing triple-a titles in games

If you're doing something like Adobe Premiere and video editing 4k even you won't see so much thermal throttling it's only in those most demanding games where this is going to happen because we are constrained by the chassis size here and how big the fans can be and how many fan outlets they can have on this nonetheless despite the fact that when I'm even playing something like 8 X legends which in some ways be a lighter game in terms of demand you'll see the core temperature is hitting in the 90s centigrade and throttling on all the cores then despite that the performance

Is excellent on this it's maxing out the refresh rate of the display and you can see that on screen for yourself we're going about 144 frames per second at time so the performance is still excellent as despite the cooling issue you could repay sis like I said it's not a whole lot of fun to take apart unless you're a more advanced person I would expect improvements though based on the radar ge 75 that it took apart where the thermal paste was way too thick and thus not effective too much not good put some thinner normal paste you don't

Even have to use LM and you should probably see five maybe even ten degrees centigrade core temp drops the GPU temperatures are never a problem here even though it's a twenty eighty max q seventy seventy three degrees centigrade when gaming is excellent stuff the display on this like I said it's the same panel as last year won't spend a whole lot of time on that full HD your only option IPS good viewing angles that stuff's nice fast refresh yay the usual almost full srgb coverage that you would expect which means that you have very good color gamut here the contrast

It's pretty good the black levels are pretty good very nice gaming experience you can even use this for photo editing reliably and not for if you're doing output for the web which is srgb base stuff battery on this 82 watt hour which is a pretty decent capacity battery happily we're beyond the days were thin and light laptops got thin and light by cutting the battery capacity in half its uses a 230 watt charger because max Q graphics doesn't need as much power and battery life on this thanks to Nvidia Optimus switchable graphics too so when you're doing lightweight productivity

Work or streaming some video you're not using that Nvidia is actually pretty good this is about a six-hour laptop unplugged with the left display said it 150 nits and doing that kind of kind of light weight demand sort of work obviously if you're doing something heavier like a 3d CAD render or video editing you're gonna have shorter runtimes and this laptop is also perfect for those things it's not just for gaming obviously so there's a lot of competition out there and we could do endless smackdowns couldn't we so why pick this over the competition well

Compared to the gigabyte Aero of 15 which is a very lovely looking laptop also very staid looks you can take to work this has better drivers honestly and is more stable that's what I've found through the past two generations comparing those two machines when it comes to the razor blade 15 you're getting and the advanced model the higher-end model with the 20 70 and the 20 80 max Q graphics inside you are getting few reports there you're getting a more attractive more classy looking build on that on a slightly better display as well but a keyboard that's

Kind of shallow you know but it's also a fine pick of course it's gonna cost you a bit more money typically razors are more expensive then there's the asou strong zephyrus model the traditional one with these strange shifted keyboards so there's a little bit of a compromise there and the drop-down bottom is a little bit of an odd design so yeah but some people are going to be captivated by that odd design – you never know it's nice to have choices honestly so that's the MSI's gs6 t5 stealth thin now a little of the shock and awe has worn off from last year when these super

Thin and light high performance gaming laptops came out we're taking them for granted already but this is still a fine machine and it holds up well versus the razor blade 15 which is probably the poster child for the ultimate premium 15.6 inch portable laptop and it still has a more normal keyboard design than the asou rogue zephyrus I honestly I'd like what they've done with the build quality the fact that it's less flexi yet it's still very light and relatively thin the performance on this is good obviously the thermals are gonna be a little bit constraining go see some

Throttling when you're pushing it really hard playing triple-a titles because well those laws of physics can't be defied there's only so much cooling you can fit into packages this in but there is plenty of performance here it's also great for pro apps of course MSI will probably have a PS 65 pristine refresh as well which is pretty much the same laptop but with the silvery casing for the creative apps crowd I'm a super mobile tech review be sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel more cool tech videos and thumbs up if you like this vid
