Moto Z review: Modular madness?

by birtanpublished on October 27, 2020

Just recently we took a look at the moto G 4 by Motorola and now we're back with the all new moto Z with no motor acts in sight the company is trying to shift the smartphone world in a whole new direction with features that we've heard about but never really seen any consumer smartphone until now currently I have the Moto Z droid edition only available on Verizon's Network until the unlocked version gets released sometime in September in the u.s. supporting gsm networks only meaning AT&T and t-mobile unlike the Moto X pure edition last year which worked on all four carriers unlocked off contract at Verizon the Z

Is going to start you at around six hundred and twenty four dollars for 32 gigabytes of internal storage or six hundred and seventy four dollars for 64 gigabytes and that's not including any of the moto mods but I'll get into those later with that kind of money you could easily purchase the galaxy s7 so it's definitely on the more expensive side and this time moto maker doesn't allow you to customize the phone as much as the Moto X pure edition such as the accents the back or even an engraving just two selections of black and grey or white and gold for now a black and rose

Gold version will launch sometime later this year still the Moto Z is a very satisfying phone to hold with the build being all aluminium dropping the curve back and dimple we all know and love from previous predecessors for a flat and thin design instead one of the downsides to the new design is that it's a huge fingerprint magnet and the smudges are not that easy to clean off either so I solved this issue by putting a dierent skin on the back leaving the pins and camera hump exposed debride does have a wide selection of scans to

Choose from for the Moto Z and the Z force so you shouldn't have a problem finding one that's due to best and it works with the Moto Maude's so I'll leave a link in the description at just 5.19 millimeters thick the Moto Z is one of the thinnest phones you can buy but when it comes to the thinner phones you usually get thicker problems and with the Moto Z that's the camera hump smaller battery capacity and a missing headphone jack that's right you can't use your 3.5 millimeter headphone without an adapter I thought I would get used to it but sometimes I would forget

My adapter at home I couldn't charge and use my headphones at the same time and since the adapter provided by Motorola is the USB type-c to three point five millimeters Jack I would probably have a hard time finding a replacement if I happen to lose it at least for now the reason the phone is so thin if you ask Motorola is to accommodate the modem odds this is more – rolla's way of implementing extra hardware features with k-style accessories that attach to the back of the phone using integrated magnets for example if you want a loud speaker you

Can purchase the JBL sound boost speaker slap it on the back and you're ready to go there's even a kickstand if you want to stand the phone in landscape for video watching there's no rebooting no permissions or apps that need to be installed they come pre-installed anyways it's very user friendly and designed very well moto is launching a handful of mods with the Z including swappable backs a big battery pack and even a projector letting you choose what extra features you want your phone to have now I know why there's a huge camera hump to keep the mod from sliding

Around at the top the only thing I don't like about these attachments is that they're very pricey when compared to buying an external accessory off Amazon and if you're looking to get multiple moto mods just keep in mind that as of right now they will only work for two phones the Z and the Z force the buttons on the side are pretty small and Eve bit too wide for my fingers so I often find myself having to reposition my hand but they're very tactile and the texture on the power button allows me to easily differentiate which button I'm pressing on the front you have a square

Fingerprint sensor it unlocks the phone really fast and reads my fingerprint almost all the time if you long press the sensor while the screen is on it will also put the phone back to sleep but I do often confuse it as being a home button the speaker on the front is both an earpiece and the Z's only speaker it gets very loud without becoming distorted and it's hard to block by accident but I would have really liked to see the stereo speaker from the Moto X back on the Z but it still sounds just fine the screen is a 5.5 inch quad HD AMOLED giving you some

Bright colors great details and excellent contrast your blacks are extremely black and your whites are extremely white the color rendering is beautiful the screen offers great viewing angles as well and is decent in outdoor lighting not getting as bright as the galaxy s7 but still allowing you to see what is going on and watching videos or playing games on this gorgeous display is also a great experience it's running the latest version of marshmallow with a few customizations from Motorola such as chopping twice for the flashlights

Swiping up to shrink the screen or twisting your wrist twice to open up the camera plus with that ambient display letting you see all of your notifications time and battery without fully turning on the display I always find myself missing these features when switching to a different device it still feels like stock Android nothing over-the-top crazy or different you do get some of Verizon's bloatware but you can easily disable most of it and when the unlocked version comes out I'm sure carry your bloatware won't be an issue at all overall I don't really have a

Problem with the software and I'm a big fan of moto slight tweaks on top as far as performance goes the Moto Z is very smooth letting me switch between the apps without a problem application reload time is very snappy as you'd expect with four gigabytes of RAM it handles everyday tasks such as emailing messaging video watching and social media very well when running a heavy 3d games such as gangster Vegas the Audrina 530 GPU did provide a lag free experience but it did get really hot to the touch after an hour of playing so much so that it was actually

Uncomfortable to hold I blamed the thickness of the phone and the metal back still the phone is fast with the software being near stock Android I was very satisfied to back up my reasoning here are some benchmark results powering all this is a 2600 milliamp hour battery that's not a lot of battery even the Moto G 4 has a capacity of 3000 milliamp hours I had a tough time getting past one day of usage around three hours of screen on time but I imagine if you're rocking a battery mod you should be just fine especially since Motorola's Turbo Power

Charges the battery extremely fast so if you're looking for a moto device with plenty of battery I recommend picking up the Moto z-force instead since it gives you a staggering 3500 milliamp hours of battery the z-force also comes with an even faster version of the turbo charge as well but the downside to both of these chargers is that the USB cable is permanently at the camera on the moto Z is a solid shooter with 13 megapixels of resolution which is lower than the X or the Z force at 21 megapixels but nowadays megapixels aren't everything in the smartphone

Camera and most users have claimed that the pictures of the Z force are very similar in quality to the pictures on the Moto Z it also carries an aperture size of F 1.8 laser autofocus optical image stabilization and dual LED flash and it has a 5 megapixel front-facing camera with a front-facing flash as well if you take a look at the camera app it's very similar to the Moto G with options for video recording up to 4k resolution panorama slow motion and a manual mode but there is a new beautification mode for self-portraits if you want to remove wrinkles and

Smooth out the face the pictures themselves look decent but not great colors are accurate saturation is not overused and the HDR does seem to fix those overexposed pictures that I seem to get in outdoor lighting in low-light scenarios the camera isn't amazing but it gets the job done pictures have quite a bit of noise and sometimes the photos come out blurry if you're not steady enough overall the camera is still pretty good when the lighting is right but it's not going to outshine other high-end smartphones such as the galaxy s7 in the end the Moto Z

Is not a bad phone at all but it needs better execution I really like the concept of modular phones and Motorola did a great job of trying to take us that direction with moto mods but I just don't think the average Joe will go out and buy an expensive accessory that works with only two phones especially when there are much cheaper traditional options like Bluetooth speakers or external chargers that offer more performance for less money and can be used by almost any smartphone also with battery life and the camera just being around average I do think the price

Point should be dropped a little especially since you can buy the galaxy s7 around the same price point and have a much better experience in those two categories performance design and software are definitely the cornerstone here and if you don't mind paying a few extra bucks for the complete package with moto mods then you might just like the Moto Z so that's it for this video thank you guys for watching if you enjoyed it make sure to go ham on that like button check out and release calm for your latest and greatest news on Android definitely let me know in the
