Moto G5 Plus: Unboxing & Review

by birtanpublished on November 22, 2020

What's going on guys Mike here the Detroit Bork checking out the Moto G 5 plus so this is the fifth generation of a series of phones that really has pioneered the best in terms of budget smart phones now this can be had as cheaply as 185 dollars or as much as 299 dollars now the version I have here is the cheapest you can get I bought this through Amazon Prime and I guess me 32 gigs of storage and 2 gigs of ram there's also a 64 gig version with 4 gigs of RAM now the big news with this generation is that we train an all-plastic design for an all-metal design which is quite impressive for a

Phone of this price it feels much more rigid and looks much higher quality but it definitely is a bit heavier than the plastic film that we had before it's also more compact and that's because the screen has shrunken from 5.5 inches to 5 point 2 inches so if you felt that the Moto G 4 had grown too much in size you're gonna appreciate the size reduction other people might be disappointed by this and despite the budget pricing there are some unique innovative ideas in here which we're gonna take a look at so again to the unboxing pretty simple experience here

The first thing we have here is our phone and the phone does have this piece of plastic covering the glass which highlights some of its main features now removing the tray in the bottom of the box are all of the included accessories and that includes our turbo power adapter so this quickly recharges the internal battery of the Moto G 5 which is 3000 milliamp hours that's the same size as the g4 from last year also included is a USB cable this is micro USB so unfortunately the Moto G 5 still hasn't made it to use PC yet in addition to a bunch of paperwork we also get a

Sim ejection tool which is white in this case now I actually really like the design here this color is called lunar grey it's also available in gold but this lunar grey is kind of like iPhones Space Gray and to me it's a really appealing anodized finish it also has some of these polished chrome Shaffers around the edge which again highlights the fact that this is a metal phone along the right side we have our volume rocker and a textured power button down below we'll find a microUSB port a headphone jack and the microphone and toward the top edge we have a

Combination microSD and nano SIM tray now what we didn't find along the side like other phones our speakers and that's because we have a front-facing loudspeaker built into the earpiece so in addition to facing in the right direction it sounds pretty decent although I wish it was a bit louder in some cases this actually sounds better than some flagship smartphones so on the back of this phone is a Singh motorola design feature which is this very large camera module so of course it does stick out and that's disappointing for such a thick phone but it's

Definitely not too bad now the great thing here is that this is covered in glass so it's nice and scratch resistant but we also have a fairly wide aperture F 1.7 12 megapixel camera now that's fewer pixels than these 16 megapixels from last year but that wider aperture does let more light in unfortunately no optical image stabilization but we do get 4k video recording also below that is a set of dual LEDs and if you look closely here you'll see that I have infrared lights on either side of the camera now that's not visible to the naked eye just my

Camera's picking this up but that's part of the proximity detection system so this phone is able to determine whether it's in your pocket if it's been moved or lifted from a table in a response by waking up the display to show you your current notifications when you move it now although we have fewer megapixels 12 instead of 16 we do get dual all the focused pixels which means this camera is now referred to as a rapid focus camera that basically means it's able to focus more accurately and quickly compared to the previous model that's important with an F 1.7 aperture just

Because that camera has to move quite a bit to find focus now that wider aperture does let a lot of light in so we have good low-light performance although we don't quite have the image processing of other high-end phones so you're not going to get the image performance at these specs seem to suggest but it's still a great camera for this price the other benefits of an F 1.7 aperture is a nice shallow depth of field and with laser-assisted all the focusing on a budget phone again it's able to find the right subject so it focuses correctly on what you want to

Focus and blurs out the background I'm also pretty impressed by the 4k video that comes out of this camera so although we don't have optical image stabilization we do get a good amount of light into the camera so exposure does look pretty good it does like to hunt around abruptly in some situations but for the most part it's pretty smooth we also get continuous all the focusing and it works pretty smoothly it's not as fast as I would like to see but it's definitely more accurate and smoother than a lot of comparable systems especially from high-end smartphones now

When it comes to the display this is a 5.2 inch 1080p LCD IPS display which is smaller than the 5.5 inch 1080p display from a previous model but for the most part this is a good-looking display has a good sharp resolution is very bright but definitely isn't the most vibrant or colorful display out there and tends to get washed out because it's so bright and doesn't have those deep blacks it's also prone to some off-axis distortion but otherwise is a solid display for this price also next to the earpiece is a pretty decent five megapixel camera

With an F 2.2 aperture good for 1080p HD video that's pretty decent for a budget phone and down below taking advantage of that very large bezel is a much improved fingerprint sensor which is much larger and wider and it's also recessed this time so it doesn't stick out like the previous mount again this is not a physical button it's just a capacitive button that integrates a fingerprint sensor now for the most part it's pretty quick and reliable but I've definitely seen faster on other phones unfortunately if you're a fan of NFC or NFC payments that's not available with a

G5 plus in terms of specs the big news here is that we go from the snapdragon 6 17 to the 625 both of those are octa-core processors but you're gonna see pretty significant gains here in terms of our Geekbench scores especially with a multi-core score the other news is that the adrenal 506 is replacing the adrenal 405 which does deliver improved gaming performance so in terms of our compute benchmark you can see pretty significant gains here as well so in terms of day to day performance there is plenty of horsepower here for an ear stock version of Android 7 so it can

Keep up with Android 7 just fine and all the apps that are currently available but I seem to run into some issues with only two gigs of ram sometimes I'll see things get stuck or stalled so I would like to see four gigs of RAM on this film of course it does come with a higher price tag but I definitely think it's worth especially at this price so digging into the software experience this does have the ambient display mode so if it's laying flat on the table or it's in your pocket and you lift it up this will wake up the display flash your notifications and show you your current

Date time and battery charge status but of course you can bypass all of that just by tapping and holding the home button now unfortunately because this is the Amazon model I can't bypass the lockscreen I have to look at it because there's ads there and that's part of the subsidy so if you get the version that isn't subsidized you would just go right to the home screen otherwise I have to hit that twice to unlock directly to it now this bun is the really big story here they've made some interesting changes to the interface which you can turn off if

You don't want it so you can see we don't have any Android keys on the screen we also don't have any capacitive Android keys on the left and right to the home button and that's because we have a gesture feature built into the home button that replicates all of this so the way this works is actually kind of innovative so if you tap the home button this takes you back to the home screen tap and hold until you feel one vibration that locks the device and if you tap and hold until you feel two vibrations this launches into the Google

Assistant so what about back and recent apps well it's actually pretty simple so if you want to go back just swipe left and that's makes sense so that took me back now if you want to open up recent apps swipe to the right it takes you to the recent apps viewer this also has multi window mode or side by side windowing just drag and drop your window that you want to open side by side and open up something else of course if you don't like this we can go ahead and modify this under the modo app and what we'll find here is actions and then we'll see this one button navigation

System so you can turn this off and when we do this restores our on screen Android keys now if you turn these navigation keys back on this just acts as a fingerprint sensor but it also acts as the lock button so again tap and hold until it locks to the device so we no longer have actions such as home bun or the Google assistant built-in here now for the most probably like this swiping system but it does get a little clumsy and it's not as reliable as a few buttons but it's nice that you don't have to change your grip as much when you're using this swiping system now the

Thing I don't like about this is that I'm constantly locking the screen accidentally because I'm just pressing the home button too long and that happens quite often then that's a little frustrating so it'd be nice if I could just turn that off because I don't really need that to lock the screen because of a button on the side to do that now if you have the Amazon version we get lots of Amazon apps which we can't uninstall so unfortunately all we can do is remove them from the home screen but they remain in the app drawer now besides all of these Amazon apps we

Do have an FM radio which is kind of neat here you have to plug in the set of headphones which are not included but of course any set of headphones will work now one of the apps I want to dig into here is the Moto app so this is where many of our unique features are hidden so for example under actions we have the one-button navigation so we can turn that on and off we have chopped twice for a flashlight feature we're pretty familiar with now I have to do is chop twice to turn the flashlight on and off and if you don't want that happening you can turn them off as well we have twist

For quick capture which is a feature I really like about Motorola phone so again just to your phone to launch into the camera app snap a photograph and you can also switch between the front-facing and rear-facing camera by twisting again we also have swiped to shrink screen but this only works if we turn off the one-button navigation so let's go ahead and turn that off so we can demonstrate that feature so just to show you how this works you swipe up toward the middle and this will minimize where the center of the display you can tap

Anywhere on the black space so you get back to full screen now if you swipe to the right or to the left this justifies to the left or right we have a few others here such as pickup to stop ringing so soon as you pick up the phone the ringer goes off and then we can also do not disturb by flipping the phone face down under display this is where we could turn off live screen notifications so if you don't want those flashing on the lockscreen you can just turn them off right here or blocks or naps from showing that on the lock screen or limit the amount of information and detail

That appears on the lock screen in terms of vibrate on touch if you have new notifications and you pick up the phone this just vibrates to let you know now the rest of the interface is pretty close to stock Android we have our notifications with a clear all button down below we can expand out our quick setting toggles and they're pretty close to stock Android nothing really unique here so if we go to edit you can expand this out to see what else is available so if you want to edit these just drag and drop to the active screen or remove anything you don't want by dragging it

To the inactive screen you can also add the nearby feature now if you don't want this default widget you can go ahead and remove it if you don't want it but I find it useful so dig into the settings panel not a whole lot to take a look at here so you can see we can swipe in from the edge to jump to our settings list go back here to get to the main settings homepage and then the options here a pretty basic nothing really stands out under display we have the option to turn on the camera by double pressing the power button which is great this works whether the device is locked or not so

That takes you right to the camera now the one feature that's unique to this Amazon version is this Amazon settings page so this allows us to switch our accounts or modify our account preferences terms of the camera app it is really simple it's easy to use and gets the basics right snap a photograph you can tap anywhere on the shot to adjust exposure and focus manually if you want we can also take a burst shot it's not the fastest first shot here and then we can also swipe in from the edge to get to our settings and some of the settings include our resolution in terms

Of our video resolution we can go up to 4k at 30 frames per second or if you want 60 frames per second you can go down to 1080p in terms of photo size 12 megapixels is 4 by 3 so you want to crop it if you want 16 by 9 otherwise that's all there is to it you can turn on HDR set it to auto we have our flash controls and the timer and that's about it in the upper right corner we have a suite of modes to pick from including video so to record video you have to jump to a different mode so you can start recording video you can zoom in

And out while recording video so no pinching in out required pause it snap photographs or just stop it and we also have a promo and the promo that's kind of neat here so I can expand out the manual controls here or just select them one at a time so at the end of the day the moji 5 does something that I really like about this type of phone and that is the question why flagship phones are so expensive especially when this one gets all the basics right and a lot of flagship phones can't even do that it's got a great display a great design that's solid and rigid a great camera

System that really impresses and then your stock Android experience that isn't bogged down by the weight of its features and that comes with great battery life as well so overall the Moto G 5 is easily my recommended film for anybody looking for a phone that's cheaper than 300 or even $200 alright guys if you enjoyed this look at the miller g5 if you did please give this video a thumbs up to let me know and i'll see you again in my next video
