M1 MacBook Pro Vs 2017 MacBook Pro! (Comparison) (Review)

by birtanpublished on January 10, 2021

Welcome back everyone time to do another comparison between the brand new m1 macbook pro and an older macbook the 13 inch and the 15 inch retina macbook pros from 2017 now what i will tell you is and i've been making i think this is like the third comparison i've done of the m1 macbook pros and i want to stress this very the beginning of the video if you currently have a 2017 macbook pro and so far you've made it work like everything's worked out perfectly and you don't have any issues with it

Then what i would tell you is honestly i would recommend keeping it there's really not a humongous reason to go to the m1 the lineup of macbooks right this second but do keep in mind and i want to preface that whole entire i want to preface my preface by saying that pretty much the m1 macbooks are going to be the some of the best macbooks you can pick up but they aren't necessarily the best they're going to be right now and there's no reason to like be the first one to pick up these specific macbooks right now

Because you can always wait a year you can even wait multiple years and it's still not going to be you know at the pinnacle yet because apple is going to be making a lot more features a lot more software features and software enhancements focused more towards the m1 lineup than these older intel-based macbooks so 100 keep that in mind now pricing-wise the m1 macbook pros are going for about 12.99 for the base model but you can configure it up to you know a much higher model if you want to with a ton more storage

Now for the 13 inch 2017 macbooks the base models pretty much with just the two thunderbolt ports and everything are gonna be costing you around i would say around that 700 to about 900 dollar price tag depending on the condition as well as if you configure it up to that four usb type-c port option now for that 15-inch i've seen it more towards around you know 1200 to about 1500 maybe about a thousand to 1500 depending on the condition how much you you know spec it up to and everything

Now you can get the 16 to 32 gag models for the 2017 15 inch models but the 13 inch you can do 8 or 16 gigs of ram so definitely keep that in mind another huge thing to keep in mind is that with that 2017 model the base ssd storage was 128 gigs but now with the base storage for the m1 macbooks and i think for the last generation and the last generation before that too the base model has been 256 gigs so definitely keep that in mind now that we have pretty much all the

Basic layout throughout the whole entire macbooks in terms of the design they're pretty much almost exactly the same you know you're not going to feel one macbook and feel the other one and feel like you have a way better more premium machine that is not going to be the case at all they pretty much have the same screens i have heard and seen and rumors that like the m1 macbooks have better screens i totally do not see it at all i feel like both these have pretty much the same

Exact screens for the most part which is not a bad thing i think that's actually a pretty good thing and another thing to keep in mind is that with the 2017 lineup not every single model had a touch bar with the 2020 m1 macbooks we do have touch bars on all models so if that's up to you then you know that's great if you want to have it you have that capability if not that's totally cool these you know none touch bar models still have a lot of capability too pretty much almost the exact same capability as the m1

Macbooks now one of the biggest disadvantages i would say of even staying away from not only the 2017 lineup but really the 2016 to about the 2019 macbooks would probably be that butterfly keyboard mechanism that you know that apple used now that has messed up a lot of macbooks throughout their lifetime and i don't understand why they did that and i really played a lot of these macbooks now if you're using a macbook docked up to you know a workstation with a desktop

Monitor and all that stuff and you have you know another keyboard and another trackpad then by all means i would say that's not a bad setup and that's actually pretty good you could do a lot with these 2017 macbooks but the biggest differentiating factor is the problem with these macbooks is that sometimes these things with the keyboard issues you know the keyboards would stop working they would stop responding certain keys would stop responding and that's a huge problem with these 2017 macbooks

Luckily with these 2020 m1 macbooks they now switch back to that older scissor mechanism switch so we don't have to worry about those butterfly keyboards not working anymore so like i said before that's another humongous asset for sure and you're definitely going to feel like you're going to have a more durable macbook from that m1 macbook versus this 2017 one now that's really the main difference in terms of the outside besides the touch bar

You know separating the fingerprint sensor and the escape key so when you look at both when you feel both they're going to be almost exactly the same except for the fact that the m1 macbooks only have one option in terms of the usb type-c ports and that is the two usb type-c port option there's not yet a 4 usb c port option yet for these macbooks for the m1 macbooks but we do have that for the 2017 ones so that's why i would probably tell everyone if you currently have a 2017 macbook and it is that quad core option

Or that quad usb type c port option i would probably tell you to wait for another m1 macbook refresh for either the 16 inch or that 13 inch with updated ports aka the quad port option because right now there's only two of them and a lot of people may actually prefer not having that they may prefer having you know a you know more usb type c ports at the end of the day so that's another pretty big thing you may be getting more ports from your 2017

Macbook potentially than your m1 macbook pro that you could be upgrading to so definitely keep that in mind and another thing if you go to apple's website they are still selling intel-based macbooks those are the two i guess top-tier macbooks they're selling so don't just buy those ones if you want them once again like i stated if you want the m1s with the quad you know port option you would probably end up waiting for those so definitely keep that in mind now in the software standpoint like i

Said before right now they're both going to be getting software support for a pretty long time i think all the retina macbooks from the 2013 onwards are still supported so we're still going to be getting like three or four more years of software support from this macbook potentially so i wouldn't even be worried about that standpoint but the other thing is i guess they knew before these m1 macbooks apple is tailoring their software to ease potentially right now right now

But eventually in the future those updates you know for every single mac os update that we're getting is going to be more tailored to the m1 macbooks than these you know intel based macbooks and the reason i say that is because apple is supporting these iphone apps and ipad apps on these m1 macbooks these intel-based macbooks aren't really going to support it unless you rewrite and recompile the code through xcode every time which would be annoying you don't have to do that with these m1 macbooks they run natively eventually i

Don't think right now they run this smoothly but they'll definitely do it as soon as possible i think apple's going to work on it so that's another humongous thing and definitely the m1 macbook pro is definitely going to be outlasting the 2017 macbook either one of them either the 13 or the 15 inch one just based off the software support alone but the performance i mean every single geekbench score that i've seen of this m1 macbook and every single

Person's experience i've heard has been tremendous everyone has been hyping these things up and as i used mine i mean i'll definitely tell you it's a smooth experience it's fast one thing that i really really do like about these m1 macbooks and i think it's probably my favorite thing why i'm probably going to wait until the 16 inch one has the m1 chip inside of it is the fans they just don't turn on at all even when i was playing fortnite at like pretty high resolution like i don't know what

Graphic setting so i'm pretty sure it was a good one because it looked great that performance was very very good on that macbook and the fans never ramped up i have a macbook from 2015 and i've owned every single macbook that pretty much ever came out and every single time i used one including these 2017 ones as soon as you boot it up and you start using a couple things you'll already kind of hear the fan ramp up a little bit now it just depends sometimes it's not all the way

I think there are levels to it but it's still super annoying that you'll just be sitting there and sometimes you may want to record an audio like i'm recording now but you're gonna have to wait until your fans cool down a little bit with these m1 macbooks you're not going to really have that you know problem but on top of that you're going to be getting better performance so if you're somebody who has that 2017 macbook either the 8 gig or 16 gig of ram options or even those 15 inch ones and you feel like the

Performance just isn't that great and you feel like it's starting to slow down going to that m1 macbook pro is definitely going to be doing you justice you're going to feel like you're having a much better performing machine especially when you consider the fact that these 2017 macbooks had dual core cpus the 15 inch had quad cores but this m1 macbook has eight cores so that's another pretty big difference they're just such a better performing machine from these m1 macbooks than these older

You know 2017 macbooks and that's just based off the performance the battery life has also increased tremendously on these m1 macbooks now i'm going to assume that the battery sizes are roughly about the same mostly because you know they're in the same format and they didn't really remove anything from this macbook but they actually increased a lot of the battery life just because switching over to the m1 chip really optimized the amount of battery that it has inside of it instead of

You know relying on that intel-based chipset we now have that apple silicon that can actually use that battery inside of it much more thoroughly just like on apple's iphones so you're going to be getting better battery life on that 2020 m1 macbook pro than that 2017 macbook any one of them the 13 inch or the 15 inch so keep that in mind i will definitely tell you when it comes down to it that in and of itself may be a big enough reason for people to upgrade but the performance increase the longevity and support and all that i

Mean it's just gonna be outrageous but like i said before just because we have these new macbooks it doesn't mean that you should just you know run out and get them right now from what i've been hearing from all the rumors next year apple is going to be pretty much replacing all their mac lineup and we could potentially be seeing a new imac that's probably what i'm waiting for but apparently in quarter one of 2021 we're going to be getting a new 16 inch m1 macbook and and that is what i'm going to upgrade to i'm going

To buy it the same day i'm going to fall in love with it and that's pretty much what i'm waiting for i'm just waiting for that specific macbook to come out and i'm going to replace all my you know imacs and macbooks with that specific machine and i would probably recommend everyone to wait out for those phones right now there's still some issues with these m1 macbooks which there's always issues as soon as a product comes out especially when it's a newly released product with a brand new chipset inside of it

So that's what i would probably tell you guys to do is just wait out there's no rush to get it right now you can even wait two years to pick up these m1 macbooks or the m2 or whatever new chips that's going to be outside then and you'll still be ahead of the curve this is a slow process from transitioning from intel to m1 apple cider themselves so it's not going to be like they're going to just run out and push all the new features and all these new things all in once

It's going to be a slow process so if you're somebody who has a 13 or 15 inch macbook i would recommend waiting until apple releases these m1 macbooks with four usb type-c ports once that happens you're gonna be in a much better position and there's gonna be more flexibility and i think maybe they'll even you know decrease the price of these you know other ammo macbooks probably not but if you wait out until then and if you also wait until the 16 inch m1 macbooks

And the imac m1 and all these other ones come out you're going to be setting yourself up in a better situation than if you just jump the gun right now but if you have the money and if you don't care about it i would say go for it you're you can get to someone macbook and a lot of the problems are going to be fixed within a couple of months and you're going to be set and there's really not time i mean this is like the beginning of the new phase it's like picking up a property

It's like buying something that's like going to appreciate in value so much more than what you're buying for usually like if you went and picked up an intel based macbook right now you're probably going to be outdated very soon you know it's kind of picking it's kind of like picking up an iphone 8 or something like that but if you pick up these m1 macbooks it's kind of like picking up an iphone 12 pro max but the m1 macbooks right now are kind of like the iphone 12 mini of the iphone 12 lineup i think if you wait until like the next ones

Eventually they'll be the 12 pro max that's going to be a really good value so the choice is yours but that's pretty much how i would compare the 2017 macbooks the 13 inch and 15 inch i guess the m1 macbook pro if you guys have any other questions or anything let me know in the comment section below hit the like button help me so much but definitely hit that subscribe button every single subscriber that we get really does count so me so much if you guys can hit that also check out the other links down in the description as well my twitter my
