LG V40 ThinQ Review

This is Lisa from mobile tech review and this is the LG v40 thank you this is their new flagship Android smartphones available on all major carriers we happen to have the sprint model on board here widescreen OLED high resolutions despite three cameras on the back the latest Snapdragon processor you get the idea it's pretty good we're gonna look at it now and now a shout out and the thanks to our sponsors sprint and their sprint complete products it's basically a peace of mind for you and your phone crack your screen oh my god is there anything worse than that right

That feeling $29 with sprint complete and you can get your screen replaced nice also cloud storage especially it depends on what brand of phone you're using and what service you're using some phone makers charge an awful lot for a phone cloud storage don't think so in spring complete you get unlimited cloud storage for your photos and your videos and all that sort of thing now I know if your phone is lost or stolen but you know you have a backup in the cloud speaking of lost install and phones another horrible thing well with spring complete you can actually get a

Replacement within 24 hours and if you're too busy they can send the phone to you so you don't have to go to the store and get that taken care of sweet then there's passwords all the passwords that you have to enter on your phone and remember do you have a password manager maybe you do maybe you don't you certainly should well it's spring complete you get password management service so you can have secure passwords and you don't actually have to memorize all those passwords don't because they make it easier for you now say Sprint has a network built from Unlimited and

They have their unlimited plus service no matter what sprint complete has your back so visit Sprint complete comm or call one eight hundred five eight four thirty six sixty-six switch to sprint today to get these great features and now back to our our review the v40 here's your usual tall but relatively narrow phablet size glass on the front glass on the back kind of fun it's Gorilla Glass 5 so this should help a bit with some shattering kind of issues but yes it's fragile its glass it has all the usual flagship specs that you would want to find in a phone they cost

Around 950 dollars this is the year of expensive phones this was actually around 50 bucks less than some of the competition but still it's very expensive and that's going to be a hard sell LG who's always seems to be chasing after Samsung and Apple these days anyway you have a snapdragon 845 in here which is the best Snapdragon CPU currently available you have six gigs of RAM 64 gigs in storage you've got not just three cameras on the back you have two cameras on the front a normal view and a wide selfie view so you can have

You and your scenery behind you or you and your friends all together in the same frame of the photo it's ip68 water-resistant it supports wireless charging so we have a fingerprint scanner on the back and LG has stopped using them as the power button now they're just they have a regular side power button like most phones do they have a dedicated Google assistant button which I'm not too thrilled with I mean I'd rather have it be dedicated camera shutter button or something like that but that is what it is this has a headphone jack because as

Usual LG focuses on high quality audio there's a 32-bit high quality audio deck for the headphone jack also supports DTS X for a headphone out as well and it has this little kind of boom box feature going on where it uses the interior spaces of the phone bigger though they may be as a kind of echo chamber like you would do for a woofer to try to improve the audio even from the built-in speaker it sounds you know reasonably decent it's still the phone folks how good is it gonna get in terms of speaker quality in terms of looks I was actually impressed when I unboxed the phone LG

Aesthetically was a little challenged for a while they had a couple of great moments like when they had a leather back LG phone if you remember that but this one is very nice and very clean looking I like the look of it it doesn't feel too – you mungus in hand it feels fairly light it's a little bit more manageable se than the galaxy note 9 but not any more hand friendly than the galaxy s 9 plus or the huawei mate 20 Pro that we just reviewed recently overall it looks like a quality piece its pleasant the display quality has definitely improved for if you haven't

Looked at LG's for a couple of years it was just amazing how their displays despite the fact they make beautiful TVs we're not all that this is all that this is a very high resolution widescreen displays OLED the colors are good the color tuning is very good on this one of the complaints I had about the huawei mate 20 pro is that the color tuning on wasn't so awesome this is very nice-looking you're not gonna look at this and say oh I wish I had gotten a Samsung or something like that the phone does have a micro SD card slot for storage expansion which is good because

64 gigs is on the low side for a flagship phone these days so you've got that available happily a standard memory storage technology that up to 2 terabyte card is supported and you probably are going to want that expandable storage because you've got a triple camera set up on the back that's gonna encourage you to take some pictures so you've had three lenses here you have a telephoto you have a normal angle and you have a wide angle this is how you get a travel zoom equivalent in your pocket these days with smartphones you know a while ago some manufactures tried actually

Putting lenses it did zoom and they stuck out from them the phone that didn't work out so so this is the answer I think we're gonna see more and more phones that have multiple camera lenses on the back so that you can have your your wide-angle your your telephoto including portrait effects which we've come to expect with flagship phones and then the kind of normal field of view the main camera is 12 megapixel telephoto lenses 16 megapixel the wide-angle is 12 megapixel so in terms of resolution those are pretty standard they're noting that it's going to shock

You or anything like that but the quality on it is pretty good I really can't say that the camera quality in terms of photo and video is going to beat the pixel 3 or pixel 3 XL which is a tall order even the samsung galaxy s 9s 9 plus the note 9 and the iPhone tennis family of phones so why do I say that the photos under good lighting are decent enough but the color balance is sometimes not perfect in for video the same thing is true you can see this shot that I did at the pool where the everything is skewed a little bit towards the red magenta for no apparent

Reason not something that usually happens with camera phones low-light shots can sometimes be very good and other times look kind of noisy and water coloring it's a little bit hit missed I mean none of these are bad photos these are very good looking photos but they're just not something that's gonna beat the pants off the competition where it does stand out though is the versatility of those different zoom lenses I think most of us know by now the digital zoom in loses quality and there's no such thing as digital zooming to wide-angle it you can't go wider than whatever the lens is

Built to actually show you so the versatility here means that it if you're used to having a point-and-shoot are you used to have or still have an SLR and you've got one of those short-range compact zoom lenses on there you've got the same thing essentially going on here with that degradation in quality and that part does rock as you'd expect because LG has a lot of software features there's a bunch of different modes here you have optical image stabilization by the way as old well as electronics to stabilization one of the

Features is triple shot where it actually takes a photo with each of the three camera lenses and then merges them in a kind of zoomy gif I don't see much of a use for that but hey it's there does HDR 10 video does HDR photos you've got 4k video at 60 frames per second if you wish you've got one where you can even switch the background with something that you've already have in your gallery again you have the portrait mode where you can control the level of blurring as well if using the telephoto lens particularly out of the background of the photo to get some of those kind

Of bow collisions shot so all those staples are there and then a couple of others like the usual film filters and effects and all that sort of thing it has an emojis copying Apple here and it's not as good I hate to say it whereas Apple does a kind of a delightful job it really picks up on all the nuances of the faces you're making this one misses a lot there's no tongue sticking out and sometimes it actually it doesn't really get crowning I guess we're all supposed to be very happy so strange things will happen and if you stick your tongue out instead it shows

The character with all the teeth and then there's the creepy little sheep character enough said hey I cam is still here and that's basically Scene Recognition like you'd see on a point-and-shoot or a consumer-oriented digital SLR camera it's pretty transparent it's not in-your-face and it seems to do a reasonably good job one thing about the camera is the app for us crashed a lot in the front switching between the two cameras it did not want to switch to the wide-angle camera for me reliably I'm sure they'll be fixing that with

Software updates soon enough though LG is pretty reliable well we're talking about software we have LG's usual UI which it looks a lot like Samsung's UI which both of those have improved over the years it's not heavy-handed it offers you a lot of customization over phone settings in that part I like a lot no more cartoony icons and all that if you haven't looked at an lg phone in a while it's good the bad news here is this is Android 8.1 Oreo no it doesn't have an 9.0 PI even though that's been out for a while and other competing phones I have

Just launched now are having 9.0 and LG much like Samsung's track record is not for having the world's fastest updates so that's a little bit of a disappointment performance on this it's a Snapdragon a 45 it's top of the line so it matches the flagships in terms of benchmarks marks it in terms of fluidity I didn't see any slowdowns or lagging with this phone granted six months from now things could change him sometimes happens with the Android phones that have skins and overlays but it's absolutely fast and fluid and delightful to use currently how about

Battery life you have a lot of high-end features here you've got three cameras you've got a very high resolution display you have a fast processor all the sort of stuff going on and a 3300 milliamp battery which for a phone this large is not that big and that explains why the phone feels relatively light I picked it up and I thought well it's nice it doesn't feel like a little weight in your hand so battery life on this is just about average we're talking for hours and screen on time actual use time the screen is on you're doing things that means not standby time not

The time is sitting in your pocket happily sleeping and waiting for you to do something with it supports wireless charging like I said and you've got the usual Qualcomm fast charger in the box so that's the LG v40 here it comes thank you yeah Android flagship smartphone expensive yes a little bit cheaper than the other expensive competition for 2018 prices are out of control aren't they yes it is it takes almost all the boxes that you would expect to see except for there's no facial recognition for login I would like that it starts to feel a little old

To have to reach to the back of the phone you use a fingerprint scanner but you know they're not alone in doing that at this point the display on this is beautiful I really like the look of it I like the feel in hand the performance on this is very nice they've done a very good job the only challenge for LG and it may not be fair but it's the way the market is is that they're gonna have to go the extra mile frequently to gain ground against the very biggest competitors which would be Apple and Samsung in this case but things like the triple cameras on the

Back where you have actual telephoto and wide-angle lenses in addition to your main lens really are great for smartphone photography and for many of us phone is our only camera these days I'm the super mobile Tegra be sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more cool tech videos and the thumbs up feel like this Ben
