LG gram 17 Review – Lightest 17″ Laptop

by birtanpublished on April 12, 2021

This is Lisa from mobile tag review and this is the LG gram 17 usually things get smaller right in this case the LG gram has gotten bigger and I think that's probably a pretty brilliant thing this is a 17-inch ultrabook that weighs only two point nine five pounds which is about 1.3 kilograms in other words just like we you know it's crazy light okay so we reviewed grams in the past and they're all crazy light and they're all covered with nano carbon magnesium so that's how they get them like and last year we did the 15-inch and this time we've got the 17 inch which has a lot of the things that we liked about the gram

Which is to say a relatively good selection of ports on board despite the fact this fan and this light and all that sort of thing you're not too compromising reports we have Thunderbolt 3 on board we have a 2k display on this which we'll talk about in detail of course a lot of nice things like including Intel eighth generation called 8.5 generation whiskey Lake quad-core ultrabooks CPUs you're not going to know so I would say that the LG Graham 15 last year was pretty well received for people who wanted a larger screen ultrabook but they didn't want all the

Weight and the compromises are involved with carrying your average 15 inch laptop around so LG's gone a little more brilliant this time and said hey let's make a 17 inch because 17 inch laptops aren't pretty uncommon these days there's some mobile workstations there are gaming laptops obviously more powerful also a lot heavier and bigger and all that sort of thing Dillons bronze they do go up to 17 inch different weight class entirely so this is pretty unique so this is for those who don't want to carry a lot of weight but have the room in terms of dimensions

Obviously to carry a 17 inch laptop around the footprint is not that big because the bezels on this are pretty darn tiny so it's not an immense thing to carry but if you're traveling in coach in the trade table there you will certainly hang out on the size and both ends with a laptop screen this big like I said it's how we have Intel quad core eighth generation Ultrabook cpu so not mobile workstation class this is an ultrabook but these days those CPUs are very powerful so for those of you are doing normal everyday productivity work occasional video editing

Working in Photoshop it's all good for that sort of stuff even coding compiling code yeah you've got 16 gigs of RAM on board right now there is only one configuration it's the core i7 and a 16 gigs of ram 8 games are soldered on board and there's actually a ram module we're gonna crack this open so you can see inside so you've got expandable memory here which is pretty unusual in the Ultrabook space but is kind of a hallmark of your LG gran laptops it is ddr4 24 hundred megahertz – not ddr3 low-power which is nice that's a little bit faster we've got not one but two SSD

Slots they support nvme but this laptop has a SATA 3 which is the slower SSD standard still SSD so it's still fast it's just not super fast I'm not so thrilled about that LG grams do tend to be expensive this one is list price of 1699 for 1699 I would have liked to get the creature comfort of that fast nvme SSD for ports we have three USB a 3.1 ports a HDMI port micro SD card slot you have a USB C slash also Thunderbolt 3 port which is nice so if you want to use docks at work that sort of thing our display out point you can do that if you want to plug in a display port monitor

Using a dongle adapter for example that's good and we have a 3.5 millimeter audio jack no surprise there and it has a little barrel pin connector for the charger you can actually charge it over USB C but they include the barrel pin I think so that leaves that USB C slash Thunderbolt 3 port available if you do want to use it for other things the USB C port also supports power out so if you want to charge your USB C based smart phone you can do that so grams are obviously incredibly light the ideas it weighs somewhere around 1 kilogram hence the name there is some flex there it's

Not super flimsy it's not alarming but if you want something that is like ThinkPad level rigid or Dell XPS kind of rigid this is not it there is some especially in the lid if you squeeze it you'll see a little deformation I'm not particularly worried about it is they've been designed to bend and flex without breaking but it somehow manages to pass several mil STD a 10g rugged tests now some of them are not surprising because they don't have to do with physical ruggedness there for example low in high temperature is dust and salty fog so Mariners this is the one for you you

Don't see that one very often but like I said it's it then and light so keep that in mind if you like the ultra rigidity kind of thing you probably want to go for something heavier with the girl lumen I'm on board the keyboard on this is backlit and it's a short travel because it's fairly thin but 17.8 millimeters thin but it's not a horrible keyboard the trackpad is Microsoft precision it's quite nice there's a fingerprint scanner and it is embedded in the power button which is a keyboard key in the upper right corner so if that deranged is you keep that in mind or if

You're cool with that then great the display on this is very nice now with Windows 10 supporting HDR it nominally supports HDR for video but not for games it's not a true HDR display this is an IPS display with normal very good color gamut it covers all of srgb you can see the metrics on screen the contrast ratio on this is good but it's not epic this is not OLED display or anything like that so don't get too excited about this but that's it it's a very nice looking display its vibrant it's reasonably bright the color on it is pleasing and fairly accurate out of the box to the

Calibration on it's nice the only thing that I'm not too thrilled about well it's not a touchscreen and the Graham 15 we reviewed was a touchscreen so for those who who want a touchscreen it's not even an option here and it is a glossy display so there is some reflections but it's fairly well controlled one neat thing about the despite for those of you who don't like 16 by 9 aspect ratio displays which is the typical format of the video you're watching right now for example like a Mac this one is 16 by 10 so the resolution is 2560 by 1600 making it

About a 2k display in terms of heat noise it's an ultrabook so they don't generally either get too hot or too loud it obviously has a big chassis there's a lot of open space inside some components don't get too hot it as a single fan that exhausts out the rear away from you the fan is not annoying it's not loud like most ultrabooks these days it is a small fan it can't possibly get that allowed or that annoying we had no problems with thermal throttling on this the battery on this is 72 watt era which is pretty darn roomy for an ultrabook because ultra

With integrated graphics don't really need a whole lot of battery power and the Graham typically has been a very long running machine and they claim something crazy like nineteen point five hours and if you left it with the brightest almost completely turned on doing nothing maybe you could do that but in real life it's still quite good it's about nine to ten hours with brightness set to 115 s which is about somewhere between 35 and 40 percent on this machine and doing productivity work and streaming video if you're gonna be doing heavier duty kind of stuff video

Editing compiling code a lot we got the idea then your battery life is gonna be shorter but still it's quite good the runtimes on this and this has been a selling point for the gram this has 1.5 watt speakers two of them stereo down facing and sound there's not enough to fill your your average sized bedroom and bases okay it's middling I mean these are not amidst drivers this is not a huge multi media and gaming kind of laptop of room for giant drivers but the sound is actually pretty decent and the headphone jack supports Dolby DTS headphone X no headphone audio is quite

Nice in other words so getting inside involves some annoyance and it's just a little bit of carry there are rubber feet on the four corners these are long gated ones right here and this little shorter rubber foot right there so use your fingernail hopefully you have just a little bit of finger now and just peel it off get underneath it has some really strong adhesive there but you should be able to get it off without mangling the adhesive so there's the adhesive sort of mangling but that's okay there's enough of it it stays in place this stuff is really sticky it'll go back on and the

More interesting thing is for here here here here here here we have these little disks which are cosmetic covers over more Phillips head screws so get a jeweler's screwdriver like this and carefully just pop it out when you do that it actually comes up very easily and it's not destructive this stuff is really annoyingly sticky too so yes and it'll go back on again and then more Phillips head screws to unscrew once you've got the screws undone use a guitar pick to work your way around the edges it's not absolutely necessary to do that but will make life easier and

Because there is some flex in this metal lid you you know to avoid torsionally so you can see the lid does nano magnesium carbon stuff that's what that looks like on the inside and here we have our 72 watt hour battery again the same as the Graham 15 and here are our 1.5 watt stereo speakers a really small motherboard there's more space for battery in here but I guess I want to keep the weight down that's why they didn't even go for more here's a single Ram slides nice to see most ultrabooks don't have any Ram slots it's kind of a hallmark for LG

That they do that here's our m2 SSD and here's a slot for a second one as you can see mark right on the motherboard these support both SATA 3 which is what it ships with and the faster and vme drives so if you wish to upgrade afterwards you can we have a 512 gig SK Hynix drive in ours not the fastest performer single fan over here our little heatsink or you've got upgradable RAM and SSDs here the Wi-Fi card as typical for LG and often Samsung with their laptops is soldered I'm born here's the two antenna leads for the in Intel 95 60 AC Wi-Fi card so those of

You who are more technically inclined slash geeky you might notice that this is the fan exhaust area over here and the heathaze are not right against the edge of the casing but no it doesn't just route that hot air back into the chassis here's the companion line' and you can see there's a channel over here that continues the outward trajectory of the air towards the rear so that's the LG gram 17 and certainly i mean there is nothing like this on the market if you're looking for a big screen and it's thin and light as possible or i hate to say it but maybe if you've

Got the 80 year old in your family who needs the bigger screen to be easier on the eyes and you really can't pick up something very heavy also ideal for that but obviously add 16.99 probably not something we can all afford to buy for our grandmas and grandpas is it but stuff if you're on the go you want full ultrabook performance a very nice i'll be a touch screen 2k resolution display microsoft precision trackpad good Wi-Fi it checks all those boxes and my god is crazy light this is Lisa from mobile tech review be sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for
