LG G6 hands-on: LG’s 2017 flagship is here

by birtanpublished on September 29, 2020

Everyone is David's Android police and we're here in Barcelona at Mobile World Congress 2017 and as you can tell I'm holding the LG G 6e actually just got back from an event with LG where they were kind of provide us this pre-production unit which is say the

Hardware is final on this phone the software is not though and enology did want us to disclaim that so while the look and feel of the phone and the fit and finish should be commensurate with the retail product the software is not

Done yet and so I won't talk about the software experience from a pen stability and bugging the standpoint not that I've had any problems with it but just because software is not final so let's do a brief overview of what you should

Know about the LG G 6 the first thing you're probably going to notice is this striking display which covers most of the front panel LG says it has an 80% screen to body ratio now this is a 5.7 inch IPS LCD quad HD resolution now

What's interesting about it though is the particularly wide aspect ratio as opposed to a typical 16:9 screen that we find on most smartphones the g6 is actually 18 9 now LG says this allows you to get some more usable space out of

The interface but they also emphasize the fact that you're able to make the phone screen bigger without actually making it sound much harder to hold because the phone can same stay the same width essentially while growing the

Display and I agree with that especially when you're talking with on-screen buttons I think that moving to a wider aspect ratio on a smartphone screen does make sense for sure now you are probably going to have some reach ability issues

With some buttons up at the top here because the phone is getting so tall but I would say it's definitely not unused or even hard to use as far as other specifications inside you've got a Snapdragon 820 one processor and I know

The first response is why not a Snapdragon 835 and the answer is because LG can't get them yet and neither can anybody else except for Samsung apparently when the s8 is announced next month there are four gigabytes of RAM 32

You bytes of internal storage 64 gigabytes in some markets but probably not your market if you're watching this video there's wireless charging but only for the United States which is weird a 3300 milliamp hour

Battery which is sealed inside the device which brings us to the next major change on this phone it is I P 68 water and dust proof so you can dump your g6 and we know that was a big complain about the g5 I think LG you really took

That to heart on this zone in fact I think LG took a lot of critiques about the g5 to power when it built the g6 because it seems just is built all around to address them you've got a USB C port here on the bottom with Qualcomm

Quick charge 3.0 built in I know it's not USB power delivery and I'm sure LG has their reasons I think around asking them why I would guess just because quick charge is probably a little easier for them to do the cameras on the back

Here we have seen some changes I believe they're the same sensors you'll find on the LGB 20 as far as the main main camera the narrow-angle camera goes I'm not sure if I'm actually pointing to narrow angle camera

I think I am but the the wide-angle camera has seen an upgrade though it now is also a 13 megapixel sensor the same one as the main narrow-angle camera meaning you should be able to at high quality stills or at least comparable

Quality skills out of both lenses which is great I think that's definitely going to increase the usability of that wide angle lens on front is a 5 megapixel 100 degree wide angle camera and I kind of rounds out the imaging features I don't

Think anything else has been changed as far as imaging performance otherwise in any kind of substantial way now you're also probably wondering about software wise what makes this phone interesting and unique well right now it's running

Android 7.0 and if I can get to the specification out screen here I'll show you that but this is pre-production software LG says the phone will get Android 7.1 by the time it ships that is when you go buy an LG d6 should you

Choose to do that live Android 7.1 it also has and is the first non pixel phone to have Google assistant which is a thing if that's something you particularly care about and I know Nexus fans still are waiting for assistant but

It looks like PSG g6 will get it before you do there's a micro SD card slot here there's a big SIM tray that pops out so you can expand your storage as well of course I did not ask LG if adoptable storage is supported

I don't recall what the situation on the g5 was with that I feel like it didn't support it but I'm having a hard time remembering at this very moment as far as software features honestly LG hasn't really changed much looking fields of

Software is slightly different the aesthetics but that seems to be the case with every LG flagship every year little of all little evolutions of a few things and I think this year especially we're seeing a significantly reduced focus on

Gimmicks honestly I didn't hear LG talk about almost any new software features on this phone apart from some stuff with a camera which I'll talk to you a little bit about here in a minute you have the same always-on display

Stuff that you've had since g5 to Bude and I mean honestly I've been digging through the settings of this phone just trying to find something it's considerably different than what we've seen on LG stones in the last year and

It really isn't so the way you can take that is essentially one of two the first is that LG isn't adding a bunch of useless features to your phone aside from the kind of old legacy stuff that's built in there or you can take it at LG

Isn't interested in innovating with software and I guess that's really comes down to what you prioritize in a phone one little feature I did notice that kind of I found very weird is there's this new tool in here at least I think

It's new called app trash so if you delete an app from the phone it actually puts it in a quote trash bin which is one of the weirder things I've ever seen on Android so like if you delete an app it sits here for 24 hours and you have

The chance to restore it which I am going to do there and then it comes back I don't know why that's the thing but LG seem to think that should be a thing so the camera features I want to talk to you about arresting called square camera

It's essentially a set of modes in the camera that allow you to do like square picture mosaics and stuff but I'm really not sure what about these is particularly compelling trying to get the little side button open here but I

Can't do it with one hand essentially you could do like for pictures and like a giant square or for little videos in a square it's the kind of stuff that honestly feels like a reach in terms of actually being genuinely

Useful to anybody but I think LG was looking for some kind of new features demo with the the wider screen so as you can see actually if I'm in the camera app here there's actually a full-size camera roll on the right here so you can

See in more detail the pictures you've already taken which i think is a good use as a wider screen granted you don't need a wider screen to do this it's certainly not incumbent upon doing it you could just you know hide this kind

Of stuff but it is something that you know the wider screen takes advantage of it allows you to see a little bit more so I definitely wouldn't knock LG for doing nothing so if you take a picture then the camera roll pops up with your

Most recent photo and that's one of the kind of features that LG showed us that the the wider display accommodate now you may be like me at this point and wondering well what's really what what really should I be excited about with

This phone then and it's not really clear yet to me it seems like a perfectly competent effort from LG and it seems like they addressed a lot of the problems the g5 had at the same time the g6 just I don't know nothing about

It quite stands out to me yet and maybe that will change as I use it more maybe it'll just come across as a totally well put together nice to use smart phone and I honestly haven't had a chance to use enough yet to really really decide on

That but in terms of a brief preview and just kind of a look at what makes the LG G six special I think you have it there thanks for watching everybody
