Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Extreme Review – the Dell XPS 15 has Competition

by birtanpublished on May 18, 2021

This is Lisa from mobile tech review and exciting times here this is the Lenovo ThinkPad x1 extreme if you like the x1 carbon and the x1 yoga well this one doesn't yoga but it does support a pen surprise there but you wanted it in a bigger size 15-inch as well here it is and not just that but you know Lenovo really needed a competitor to find the Dell XPS 15 and well they didn't here because this is not an ultrabook this doesn't have Ultrabook CPUs this is full 6 core coffee like eighth-generation CPUs inside and nvidia gtx 750ti max-q graphics just like the dell XPS 15 95 17 and it competes with so pretty exciting

Stuff but when you get here is quite a lot of points you get the usual lenovo milspec durable build with carbon fiber and aluminum rollcage chassis and all that sorting and display up to 4k resolution with full Adobe RGB full we're gonna look at it now and now thanks to our sponsor for this video LeGrande that they make the world's coolest I've ever seen USB seadog like it goes Lego in other words all these three parts here are dock parts you have the main dock part that connects to the laptop you have one that adds on USB a and Ethernet pass through USB C and this

Is a twenty thousand milliamp battery pack two for charging the laptops so you get the idea you clip them together it's pretty darn cool and very clever it makes it easier to carry around and very versatile back to our review what's also pretty impressive about this is it's even lighter than the XPS 15 which was one of the lighter 15-inch powerhouse mobile workstation sort of laptops on the market so this one might be slim and it might be durable but it still weighs only three point seven six pounds for a starting weight which is one point seven kilograms if you go with the 4k display

It goes up to 1.8 kilograms or around four pounds even still incredibly light pretty impressive stuff there so what do you want to know about of course is how are the thermals and we're gonna get into that in detail but first let me tell you about some of the options here again these are 45 watts coffee-like eighth generation CPUs so you're talking your six core CPU that you would find in a mobile workstation or a gay laptop speaking of that there's also the Lenovo ThinkPad p1 that we have in-house and yes they are so close it's very confusing and you can see them together

The chasis are almost identical the big difference there is NVIDIA Quadro graphics which are my workstation the sort of graphics that businesses use versus GTX GeForce style graphics will have reviews and if you really need a comparison I can do that too so now you know the vs. the p1 where we spent the stand here you've got the usual ThinkPad backlit roomy good travel keyboard with multistage backlighting on you have your choice of a full HD or a 4k IPS display with very wide color gamut ours actually measured 99% of Adobe RGB that's very unusual a lot of manufacturers claim

They have almost full Adobe coverage usually it measures about 90% when we check so this one is particularly good it says very nice despite also on this you have two RAM slots now those confusing people and then reach out to them to ask them what this confusion is you have two RAM slots 16 gig RAM modules are the biggest you can get so that means a maximum of 32 gigs with those two slots so that's what you can do we won't find out about that 64 gig I have a thing they mean it's future compatible in case somebody ever makes a 32 gig module you have not one but you

Have to m dot 2 SSD slots in this laptop no hard drive bay whatsoever which isn't unusual for something this slim and light and it supports nvme SSDs and typically there's their shipping with very fast Samsung latest generation nvme SSDs you can see the specs on screen their usual webcam and it's non chin cam happy day so for those displays let's talk about that for a little bit we have the 4k display it's an excellent display in terms of color gamut one thing I don't like is the fact that it is very glossy it has they call it edge to edge glass it's really a glass overlay if you

Look at it closely you'll notice that there are little bezels around the edges they're not huge but they're there but the glass extends beyond the bezel to the edges so for those who are wondering about that that's what the deal is on it in terms of the rest of the display specs for the 4k display they claim up to 400 is a brightness I believe we didn't never quite that but it certainly did above average in terms of brightness you can see the metrics on the screen there everything was pretty good except for the white point was kind of hot but the overall color accuracy of

The display is very good which means it can calibrate well so if you're buying this to do the serious photo and video editing professional image production this would be a very good display I wish we had the full HD in-house we don't so I can't tell you what that one looks like port so this are actually pretty good for sewing this slim and this light you have two USB a ports as pretty normal you have two that is one medium to us would be C gen 2 slash Thunderbolt 3 ports which means you can use docking stations and connect external monitors all sorts of stuff and you've also got

Full size HDMI onboard a full size SD card slot ethernet comes via an optional little proprietary adapter or you could use a USB C or USB a Ethernet adapter as well and of course you have a headphone jack on board too so pretty decent port selection like I said this is your usual ThinkPad quality keyboard the smile shape keys a little bit concave so your fingers stay centered I'm very comfortable good travel on this I do like it better than the XPS 15 keyboard for the travel and the tactile feel on it it's your usual thing pad keyboard with all the goodness that that means

Trackpad is also quite good on this again typical thing pad stuff where you've got also the nab point pointer embedded in the keyboard for those you know like that there are dedicated buttons for the nap point but not for the track panthan trackpad is a buttonless style trackpad it works fine I have no complaints about it it's good stuff speakers on this it's typical lenovo which means where the ThinkPad somehow they seem that better speakers often than the consumer line idea pad laptops go figure it's pretty loud it's pretty

Full a whole lot of really precise detail audiophile level of course no we're not talking that but it's larger than a lot of laptops on the market and there's a reasonable amount of base good enough for watching a movie that sort of thing so let's talk about performance and thermals which is gonna be the big one for this right yes it's constrained like all of the thin and light laptops that are cramming in these 45 watt CPUs here there's not a lot of space for cooling Lenovo has two fans that don't look real large I have to say compared to gaming laptops that

Actually have the same specs your typical low and mid-range gaming laptops have exactly the same specs inside is this heat pipes are pretty decent so you have to heat pipes you can see what the internals look like the found in terms of noise it's a little high-pitched not not horrible not like me or anything like that but it sounds like the sound of a smaller ultrabook fan rather than a big beefy gaming laptop somehow it does manage to cool pretty well the heat sinks on this are not very big it does a little bit better than the Dell XPS 15 again I'll have a

Snack down with that we're gonna get very detailed about that but in terms of maintaining clock speeds it does do a bit of a better job like just about every six core until an eighth generation coffee like laptop on the market the core temps will get high if you're gaming or if you're pushing it hard in benchmarks and you're engaging both the CPU and that gtx 1050 TI max q that's inside you'll see the core is hitting the upper 90 centigrade where a hundred degrees centigrade is the allowable max so there are no miracles here I don't believe anybody has a

Miracle the closest we've seen to one is the razor blade 15 with its vapor chamber cooling so here's a surprise I'm like not unlike Weddell do with the XPS 15 where the mobs are they don't even mention the fact that the XPS 15 supports a pen which also means with Dallas's they changed this place sometimes then they might change panels and it might go away who knows anyway with it but this thing pad at x1 extreme it supports their think pad pen which is Wacom AES pen so any walk in a s pen is gonna work Wacom Bamboo ink pen for example or the Lenovo ThinkPad pro pen

4096 levels of pressure sensitivity which is nice the usual and very very little bit of parallax really you can receive it at all and palm rejection not the greatest really but it's usable enough certainly so that's kind of unusual to see in a big 15-inch machine like this that goes flat on the table but doesn't do the 360 thing so for those who are looking for occasional pen use handy for signing documents certainly and for note-taking because you can flatten it out on the table even for art and has its uses that's kind of a nice swing so how about battery life

Well lenovo make some insane claims I'm sorry 15 our claim battery life I I don't know how you can even achieve that we do have the 4k display so that's gonna use more power than the 1080p you know the story 1 to 2 hour difference in runtimes when you go to that higher resolution the spike but it has an 80-hour watt hour battery unit which is a decent capacity but it's as big as the Dell XPS 15 s larger option 97 one-hour it's about the same as the razor blade 15 battery capacity in fact so it's a reasonable capacity and given the power in this machine

Since it has a less powerful dedicated graphics chip then does the razor blade where the razor blade manages about six six and a half hours or so this one does about six and a half to seven that's what light to moderate use your streaming video from your favorite service whatever it may be here and working on MS Office documents a couple of photo edits you get the idea if you're using this for a heavier work if you're playing in blender if you're compiling very large programs if you're doing don't be premiere video editing it will

Be shorter obviously there does not a fast charger and lenovo does do that so they say 80% charge in about an hour which is pretty good given the size of the battery and it has their new design charger you know we're geeks here because we're kind of excited excited when we say look I'm new to charger design it's 135 watch charger which is appropriate that's what everybody uses with a laptop that has these specs inside to be powered opening you this up is really easy there's not even a whole lot of Phillips head screws here you can

See the ventilation right here plenty of air intake it exhausts at the bag right there's a cutout behind the hinge there which is pretty clever so it's enough of an opening to be effective but it prevents it from just blasting hot air and who's ever involved behind your laptop so then we just work off the cover like that and this too little a couple little tabs there to locate it and here's our 80 watt our battery this is our Intel 95 60 AC Wi-Fi car which is Intel's top-of-the-line current card for this chipset you can see 2 m2 SSD slots we have a fast Samsung nvme Drive in

Here with the fastest SSDs currently available on the market you could do two you could do two in rain if you wanted party on so 2 ramp sauce right here one thing to note like I said is this has two RAM slots that means currently on the market with 16 gig modules being the largest 32 would be the max even though lenovo is listing 64 on their website that's a bit of a mystery there and here are two fans which are not particularly huge if this was a gaming laptop with the bigger chassis undoubtedly these would be bigger fins these are kind of like Ultrabook fans on

Steroids nonetheless they do a reasonably good job of cooling is we've talked about in terms of performance and here's our two heat pipes and the two heat sinks not terribly large tripod three screw design oh well I like to see four corner screws going on this but again the cooling does seem to be fairly effective speakers are right here they are down inside firing at the same time like I said and sound is pretty good on those so what does that all boil down to if you're buying this because you're a gamer this really is the ideal laptop if that's your primary use for the laptop

If you're looking for an ultrabook size business durable laptop with very good performance and great for professional apps Adobe CC you get the idea Photoshop Premiere compiling very large programs and code doing some moderate CAD that sort of stuff a little 3d rendering and blender maybe yes those are as perfect uses occasional I'm on the road and I've got to have my Battlefield one fixed you can see it playing battlefield one it can do that I wouldn't do it day in and day out because the thing gets toasty but then again sort of gaming laptops that are

Much larger it's it's just the stain of things these days isn't it so that's the thing pad x1 extreme from lenovo and if you're a thing kind of person and you need a bigger more powerful laptop you don't want to carry a lot of weight of course you're gonna be like we'll do these right if you think this whole black matte finish and the lenovo aesthetic or and well then you there are alternatives out there for you but for lenovo people this is pretty exciting I first saw the prototype of this a year ago Yokohama Japan at a Lenovo event and it was a long time to wait for this but

I would say it's worth the wait it's not perfect it's gonna get toasting like all these thins and lights the battery life is decent what a Lenovo claims but overall great keyboard very nice display on this and performance that's pretty good in terms of managing the balance between well thermals and high clock speeds I'm a super mobile tech review be sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more cool tech videos and thumbs up if you like this vid
