Lenovo ThinkBook 13s Review

This is Lisa from old tech review and now it's Lenovo's Terry why don't we know that well we just reviewed the HP Envy 13 last weekend the Dell Inspiron 13 7000 so this is lenovo's new offering is called the Fink book 13s there's also a 14s if you like a 14-inch better than a 13-inch up this is their answer to something that's fairly premium good build quality aluminum casing the latest Intel 8th generation quad-core CPUs relatively narrow bezels but a price tag that isn't going to make you just have a hemorrhage starts at seven hundred thirty five dollars the one that you want in terms of configuration really

Starts around eight hundred and thirty five dollars when you look at it now so this is a traditional 13.3 inch clamshell Ultrabook traditional means it doesn't yoga it doesn't do any of those fancy things it just works as a laptop though typical of Lenovo ThinkPad so this is a thing book it opens to 180 degrees flat on the table and is handy for presentations and all that sort of thing it has an aluminum casing on it plastic around the display frame only so a little different from your think pad line which usually uses fiberglass maybe a little carbon fiber magnesium alloy

You get the idea for the starting price on the build on this is pretty nice the materials are pretty nice aesthetically speaking I leave that up to you to me it sort of looks in its mineral gray finish which is the silver like a ThinkPad basically overall so this targets Soho and SMBs that means small businesses home owned businesses that sort of thing and not big corporations so things that big corporations care about like the smart card reader which most of us don't have a use for aren't an option here I think most folks are going to be fine with that really in the target segment

Again they're trying to attract some new buyers here so this has a slightly more mainstream look to it though it has ThinkPad esque features one thing that you think that people might miss is the track point the red erasers tick pointer that usually lives in the midst of the keyboard keys is an alternative to using the trackpad we do have a Microsoft precision trackpad here on board though happily for those of us who like conventional trackpads keyboard on this is not up to ThinkPad standards but is better than IdeaPad yoga's for tactile feel and key travel

Key traveling shorter than the ThinkPad but it does have a nice crisp feel to it and I actually at first thought I wouldn't like typing on this despite this short key travel it's pretty pleasant it is two-stage white backlighting some cushy no but unpleasant definitely not unpleasant inside you have the usual Intel Ultrabook internals you have quad core until late 8th generation whiskey Lake CPUs and get at the core i5 or Core i7 if you go with the core i5 eight gigs of RAM and a 256 gig nvme SSD that's gonna set you back about eight hundred

Thirty-five dollars and really it's not a bad laptop of that price especially cuz you get a pretty good full HD display so they call an anti-glare and this time it actually is sometimes the displays are kind of glossy when Lenovo calls them anti-glare but this one definitely has a matte Sheen to it this is not a touchscreen however full HD display on this is pretty good metric so as you can see on screen and I have no complaints about the quality of it which is nice because not too long ago Lenovo's under $1,000 sort of businessí laptops often hit screens yeah there's

No high resolution 4k option for this because I figure if you're going into that level of featuring up that you probably want to get a more expensive laptop ports on this are pretty decent you're certainly not consigned to life in dongle hell you have to USB a 3.1 ports you have one u.s. and BC Gen 2 port not Thunderbolt 3 but at this price range that's ok you can use USB see docks DisplayPort out that sort of thing you also have an HDMI 1.4 port onboard of course a headphone jack there's no Kensington lock slot on here another big business-oriented feature

That's missing but again for you small business owners or home users that's probably fine Lenovo's think shutters here and I think that's probably a welcome addition for many people it's really tiny but there's a little slider switch above the webcam that closes a physical shutter basically over the webcam so it disables it so nobody can spy on you through your camera there is a fingerprint scanner and that is integrated in the home button which is a perfectly logical a nice place to put it and that's on the keyboard deck above the keyboard has two Harman branded 2

Watt stereo speakers the sound isn't bad it's kind of average for a 13-inch Ultrabook nothing to write home about nothing to cringe about you small laptops small bass you get the idea but reasonable in the volume to fill a room if you're doing a presentation or something like that formance the good part is is that the cpu actually can go over water election performance short bursts of time that 15 watt cpu can run in 25 watts that's something we see a more premium ThinkPads and the Dell XPS 13 9380 for example so CPU performance is good Intel

UHD 620 graphics is your only option with this Intel based laptop and that's par for the course for a 13.3 inch Ultrabook that's fairly slim and reasonably liked now the bad news is a single channel Ram so that hurts performance particularly in integrated graphics performances the Geekbench graphics oriented test really we saw about half the score we normally would and that's because you have one Ram slot it's nice to have a Ram slot but there's only one and dual channel Ram requires two RAM slots or some Ram soldered on board to pair up with that Ram and a Ram

Slot there's no RAM soldered on board here so that does hurt it now particularly it's gonna hurt benchmarks in your real-world use if you're buying this and you're gonna do some graphically intensive things like some games older games generally speaking or more casual games since this is an ultra but you'll notice the performance isn't quite there for that kind of thing and also for a heavy-duty video export that sort of thing it's fine for Photoshop honestly but yeah those are the times when you will notice it as two fans inside which is nice and

Kind of on the beefy side for an ultra bokeh lenovo has been doing that lately with their ThinkPads and I like that the surface temperatures on this are perfectly fine not burning hot and the noise levels are well controlled typically ultrabooks don't get that noisy that the fan doesn't come on a lot nor doesn't get very loud unless you really are doing something crazy like playing bioshock infinite on it we have the core i5 model with eight gigs around the 256 gig SSD and the only display option that full HD display and battery life has been pretty good we have a 45

Watt hour battery on board and you get a 65 watt fast charger with that and that's been good for about 9 hours of battery life which is not bad at all and that's at 115 s of display brightness doing a mix of productivity works and web surfing editing of Photoshop streaming a little video not SuperDuper heavy lifting obviously if you're going to be compiling large software programs you're gonna have shorter runtimes to remove the bottom cover to access the internals you remove the Torx t5 screws now thinkpads typically used Phillips head screws this uses Torx screws and

Then you pry it off tenacious plastic clips you're best off crying from the front and working yourself around to the back given the way the clips are angled on it metal cover and here's our internals so here we have two fans with integrated graphics and a 15 watt Ultrabook CPU that's almost overkill no complaints though certainly more cooling is always better that's our socketed Wi-Fi card Intel 95/60 ac good card right there well what about RAM you say uh-huh underneath this little cover right here

Here's our single Ram slot no Ram is soldered on board you have one slot that also means you're doomed forever to have a single channel RAM you need two slots for dual channel Ram so that doesn't affect the performance alas interestingly here you see this is a long slot this will fit a standard M to 20 to 80 or full height SSD but lenovo happens to have sourced a not really well-known brand half-height SSD doesn't really matter which size they are folks that's nothing important part they're given the fact that this is a budget system you do get an nvme SSD but it's

Not gonna be a super-fast samsung Drive or something in here and our stereo done firing speakers angled towards the sides are right here and right here in a typical location for laptops this is the 45 watt hour battery so that's the lenovo think three Ness it's the lenovo that is sort of a thing pat but isn't quite and definitely isn't yoga at all so it looks like a big pad largely but it also has enough of that kind of silvery slim this good-looking this gets rid of some of the ThinkPad standard features that you might miss I actually like the track point pointer that it

Kind of conforms to the mass markets sort of fired that they're looking for maybe the people who haven't bought thing pads previously and they're hoping this is sexy enough it certainly is affordable enough and it is a good value the only thing that really I can dig in this on is the fact that it has single channel RAM and you cannot make a dual channel and that does hurts performance some at least for mobile tech review be sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more cool tech videos and thumbs up like this vid
