Lenovo Legion Y530 Review – No Bling Gaming Laptop

by birtanpublished on May 24, 2021

This is Lisa from mobile tech review and this is affordable gaming laptop by Lenovo this is a Lenovo légion y5 30 and it's got certainly a distinctive design and part of what's distinctive about it unlike most budget gaming laptops that are black and red or black and orange and bling bling bling bling this one is pretty chill looking in fact the design is very interesting and angular it kind of reminds me of the gigabyte Aero 15 X in plastic in a budget way we're gonna look at it now so besides the relatively adult coloration which is to say it's black black and more black with a white backlit keyboard no blingy colors there

The design is interesting because we have most of the ports along the back edge if that's kind of buggy right now you should know that the only of USB ports basically on the sides everything else and there's a plenty of ports on this are on the back edge like HP's to do with the omen years ago back when the omen was an expensive all-metal kind of design speaking of the HP omen 15 like the omen 15 this one has very thin bezels those barely bared that bezels that are very trendy at the bottom there's a fairly large bezel because the size of the display overall has to match

The bottom section of the laptop that what can you do it they need a certain amount of space to put the components inside speaking of the components you can see the specs on screen right now but it's just what you would expect Intel eighth generation coffee like 45 watt CPUs the CPUs that are used in gaming laptops and mobile workstations you can get a Core i5 or a core i7 you have two RAM slots in here and ddr4 of course 26 66 megahertz so a little bit on the faster side for ram 32 gigs would be the max you can get it with 8 or with 16 direct from lenovo you can upgrade it

Yourself it has both an m2 SSD used for the boot drive and there's a hard drive bay as well most configurations have a one terabyte 5400 rpm hard drive and Sun as you would expect you have a in this price range I kind of mediocre 720p webcam and a full HD display it's matte its IPs again pretty much par for the course for mini gaming laptops $1500 and under in fact and you know again this is where they're going to cut cost with budget gaming laptops the color gamut on this not so much we'll get into that a little bit in detail but overall if you look at it it's a pleasant enough

Display to look at like the brightness is kind of lacking it's really very light 5.1 pounds which is 2.3 kilograms and just under an inch thick or thin depending on how you look at it which is twenty four point two millimeters it's really portable it's noticeably feels lighter and a little bit easier to carry around then even the Dell g7 gaming laptop that we reviewed so that sets it apart where all these try to be relatively thin and light this is one of the most portable so the lid has a really neat and interesting texture if you're klutz you need tend to

Lose grip of your laptop this will help you hold on to it it's pretty subtle and it's one of those like nail files sort of things it's a way component here that when I run my nails on it it's different it's kind of neat looking none it's a contrasting glossy Legion logo that Lenovo put on the lid the interior has a nice soft touch finished to here on the wrist rest area the only drawback is it does show fingerprint Iles eventually ports on this it's a good story pretty much in this price range you get a USBC gen one you're not gonna get Thunderbolt 3 at this price you have three USB type

A ports three point why do you have Ethernet Gigabit Ethernet and you have hdmi 2.0 DisplayPort 1.4 so the latest standards for those display outputs as well there's no SD card slot though but oh well and at least it though most of the ports are towards the back you do have your USBs on each side so you don't have to keep reaching to the back quite so often it does get annoying though sure it's tidy if you're kind of docking in at your desk but otherwise it gets annoying pretty quickly the keyboard and trackpad on this the keyboards not bad is reasonably decent travel on it and it

Has some spring back so it doesn't feel quite mushy I like it it's pretty decent keyboard as they go the trackpad is man it's okay it's not horrible it's not like the msi track pads of old which we're just disasters but it doesn't feel very precise when mousing around it's just a generic Microsoft driver on this no branding on the trackpad it does have discreet clicker buttons though which I generally like because you tend to stay on target with your pointing finger without the distortion of pushing the entire trackpad down they're kind of noisy though people were here you're

Going to click click click click click it's a gaming laptop you know budget lower end one which means that we have a core i5 dish 8300 H in hours even with the core i7 though that's so budget anymore that's kind of nice but it's the graphics cards generally they take the hit here so we have the lower in nvidia gtx 1050 and 1050 TI options with 40 games of VRAM we have the 1050 TI better option in ours and it's good enough to play today's most demanding game say like far cry 5 I'm not older games you know that kind of thing at medium settings at Full HD

Resolution matching the panel's resolution and you know get close to 60 frames per second sometimes it'll drop to the mid 40s but it's still pretty playable and games are a little bit less hard like battlefield 1 will do better battlefield 5 they you might have to go for low settings usually the newer the game the harder it gets but we'll find out when it comes to that anyway that's par for the course it's fair it keeps up with the competition not much difference in performance between this and the Acer nitro 5r the Dell g7 with similar internal components now the heat and the

Noise we all the good news is is that this thing does not get very loud I would actually like to have some more manual fan control in fact to ramp the fans up higher and harder because it does get hot in terms of CPU core temperatures if you touch it especially because it is plastic and plastic doesn't get as hot if it's not burning hot the space but that would sit between your legs would be had on your lap is the place that we get hot towards the rear you're not going to touch of it the casing temperatures aren't an issue but the core temperature is very quickly go

Up to the low 90s centigrade 100 is the max allowable before the CPU is going to insist on throttling lenovo has it the set to throttle pretty much you're in the low 90s oh because you can see from our temperature graphic that some of those are temperature captured that some of them actually are some of the cords aren't throttling so this is the story with Intel eighth generation coffee-like CPUs it's not just lenovo and particularly with these thinner lighter ones it just seems to be the story even though ours is a core i5 with 4 cores not six so you can't just blame it on

Having more cores than we used to have with seventh generation they just kind of run hot if you buy this in here the tinkering type you might want to consider me pasting it with a better thermal paste and see where you can go with that use a laptop cooler or using utility like Intel XT you may be to undervolt it a little bit and that should drop the temperatures as well again it's not just lenovo's issue here so back to the display again the good news is it has good contrast and that's okay news is lenovo only claims 215 is a

Brightness we measured 238 this is a relatively dim panel which again is typical for budget gaming laptops this is a 60 Hertz refresh display which is pretty much your normal despite they mentioned that they have 144 Hertz refresh the spike coming too and that one would be 300 Nizza it's still not up on lenovo's website to buy though so I can't tell you what the pricing is we haven't tested it but anyway yeah the contrast is good the color gamut mm-hmm again it's typical of all the competition in this price range no matter which brand that you pick you

Don't have much color coverage 60s for srgb when we like to see close to 100 is not really the greatest stuff if you're gonna buy this for serious photo and video editing not a good idea if you're just gonna play games on it it looks pretty nice experiencial colors don't really pop off the screen you know like a more expensive laptop but it's not a more expensive laptop sound on this however it is pretty good these are Harman stereo speakers with the usual Dolby audio that lenovo has been using lately for the consumer laptops and it's pretty loud full and rich it does beat

Much of the competition particularly a soos at msi whose laptops in this price range have fairly anemic sounding audio i say there's battery life and as you've already guessed probably because I mentioned the battery wasn't that big on this 50 2.5 watt hours that's about the same size you'd see in a 13-inch ultrabook with much lower power 15 watts CPU and integrated graphics the stuff does have a MIDI Optimus so it can switch between intelligent and graphics and the dedicated GPU to save you some battery power but still this is about a 4 to 5 hour in general would moderate

Use kind of runtime laptops so you taking the class for example you'll get through a couple of classes with it but then you're gonna have to plug it in it has a hundred thirty-five watt charger and it's not huge at least that's one thing and budget gaming laptops don't need the super giant power bricks on it so it's relatively speaking portable but there's no Ultrabook power brick either to open this up the most annoying thing is actually just prying off the really tightly sealed edges here using a guitar pick or something piece of plastic pry tool around the edges and then the back

Kind of does a wraparound on him Phillips head screws secure that's all the ones in the back are the longer screws so keep track of them you remove them so you put the right ones back in the right places the shorties are in the shorter bevel area here so how do you do pry it off you can see what I mean this is a kind of wrap around over here wraps around the back of the ports but in the front not as much there's our interior with our spray-on shielding material plastic bottom and there's our interior to fans as you would expect two heat sinks for

The CPU and GPU tripod three screws rather than the four I would like to see the core temperatures are not super uneven at least there's our Wi-Fi card should you wish to remove it at some point unlikely it's a pretty decent card and here's our hard drive two and a half inch hard drive bay right there are relatively small 50 2.5 watt our battery right there one nice thing the heat sink extends to cover a lot of components the PCH and stuff like that so this under this is some thermal buoys tape is the m-dot to SSD it's a half-height I just haven't seen that done in a long long

Time now this is just a space retaining piece over here so if you wish to upgrade this SSD later you can get a normal full height 2280 SSD and two form factor don't worry about that you just unscrew and remove this as well and you can put a longer drive in and to get to the rambling Lenovo loves these little pry off metal covers here they're real fiddly to get back on again to line them up with the little latches but you just wrap your fingernails underneath curse it a little and then pop it up so in fact very carefully watch out for the PCB and don't touch any metal traces I

Gave up and I use a little screwdriver to pry that up at the very slim slot head so then we take this off finally here's our two RAM slots so 16 gig ddr4 26 66 megahertz Ram you could go times 2 and you can get up to 32 gigs if you wanted or you can get it from the factory with 1/8 at another 8 and then you'd have dual channels 16 gigs which is pretty much a sweet spot for most gamers so that's the lenovo legion y 530 15.6 inch so-called budget gaming laptop anything that's around $1000 is considered budget for gaming laptops still in terms of the specs the

Competition is all over it having pretty much the same stuff so based on that well that's not going to help you in picking a top but this one stands out because of the very adult design Java you said this is so you could take the work or any place in people aren't gonna be going to the game room yeah yeah you know it's pretty chill looking and the specs for the price on it are also very good like most of these budget gamers in this play could be better you know but that's where they're cutting back on it and a la 2017 the battery is the thing that

Gets chopped to make this as thin and light as it is while leaving room for all the components on these different mobile tech review be sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more cool gaming laptop videos regular laptop videos tablets smartphones you get the idea and thumbs up you like this vid
