Is the Sony A7SII Worth Buying in 2019?! The Low Light MONSTER!

by birtanpublished on April 17, 2021

The sony a7s 2 has been the undisputed king of low-light video since it was released all those years ago but something you've got to ask yourself is it still worth buying in 2019 let's find out what's up everyone i'm the everyday dead and if i can figure it out you can figure it out look I was just as disappointed as everyone else when we were all looking forward to Sony releasing their long-awaited and at this point probably hyped so much it's sure to be never as good as we want the a7 s3 and I was just disappointed when we got the a7 are for it like it got me right here if you are watching this in the

Future and this doesn't make any sense to you because you've had the amazing a7 s3 for a long time now I'm both incredibly happy for you and insanely jealous of you at the same time but back to the a7 s – now when this sucker was released way back in the dark ages of 2015 it very quickly got a name for itself as practically being able to see in the dark thanks to its revolutionary sensor time however hasn't Stood Still and we've got other great full-frame mirrorless cameras out there right now like the Sony a7 3 the nikon z6 and though I know I'm gonna catch flack for

Mentioning it the canon eos are it's great it's recording us right now so let's find out if this bad boy is still worth it's pretty darn steep price tag but before we get too far into the video however I would like to thank my friends over at B&H Photo for loaning me this a7s2 for the last couple of weeks to make these few videos about it now if you'd like to get your very own camera that can see in the dark it's pretty crazy how well it works there will be links in the description below and since you and I probably have not looked at the recording specs of the a7 s 2 and

And recent memory let's cover those really quickly so we all know what we're talking about now the Sony a7 s2 has a 12 megapixel full-frame CMOS sensor it can record it up to 4k 30 frames per second internally which was a first for the a7 S line the a7 s1 could record 4k you needed an external quarter for that though you can't also record up to 1080p 120 frames per second with this now the first big negative we're going to mention is the a7s2 unlike the a7 r2 and the a7 3 is it's lacking Sony's face detection autofocus this is racking the older 169 point

Contrast based autofocus system so we need to be paying close attention to the focusing capabilities of this camera as we go along today and now that we've got that out of the way let's throw this up on the sticks so it can be the B cam for the rest of the video old-school Zoe goodness so like I said earlier even though this is still currently one of the most popular full-frame cameras due to that low-light capabilities I mean that doesn't let it off the hook because honestly I don't think low-light performance is as important for the online content creator

But let's get serious and start by breaking the a7s2 down by the three most important aspects of a camera that's what we do here first up video quality now this camera even for having a four year old sensor still produces an awesome image we've been using in 4k 30 frames per second with the Tam around 20 to 75 and it does have a little additional crop in 4k 30 frames per second but what really impresses me with the image I'm getting out of the s2 is while Sony cameras these days actually they take 4k from their higher sensor so they have a the a7 s3 actually has a 6k

Sensor that down samples to 4k giving it a very awesome and beautiful 4k image the a7s2 though has a 4k sensor that records in 4k without any pixel binning I mean it really looks great now no image quality test of the s2 could be complete without doing some low-light tests and even in my rudimentary shooting with this thing yeah it lives up to the hype like legitimately I'm able to push this thing into iso's that I never even have dreamed or like would dare to use I mean generally I try to keep all of my footage at around 400 to 800 ISO because I can light all of this

I candlelight all of my videos in my scenes so again for me low-light isn't that important but I am so darn impressed without like what I can do with camera I mean heck I bet I could just use my cellphones light to record the rest of this video with this beast like it like 5000 ISO is nothing to be a7s2 now one negative in image quality and I mean it's not necessarily an overall negative it's more of a personal preference thing for me is I really like the new Sony colorscience that they've gotten in the a 6400 and the a7 3 I mean

I think it's some of their best work the s2 has the older colors that I don't think are as bad as the forum fighters make it out to be but they're definitely not as good as Sony is rocking today and another negative is this can only do 8-bit even if you're recording external there is no 10 bit unfortunately an awesome thing though is this camera has 5 axis in body image stabilization so we'll see this in action in a second but basically what this does is it moves the sensor around inside of a camera so it will take a little bit of the shake out of it if you're used to Panasonic's

Embody image stabilization it doesn't really reach that level so if you're gonna use this as a vlogging camera it's not a reason to leave the gimbal at home now it might sound counterintuitive but technical IQ or image quality for us fancy folk actually isn't the most important aspect that a cameras can do if you are trying to make it on an online platform audio is so I type that with 12 O's for emphasis in the script it's so much more important and like the current generation of cameras the a7s2 does give you both an audio in Jack and a headphone out for

Equipping a microphone and monitoring the audio in use and something else this awesome is you can use that Sony XLR adapter here to get pro level audio I love those things you also get the ability to manually control the internal gain on the camera to let your microphone do the heavy lifting and yeah I think the preamps on this thing and other Sony cameras are they're just they work very well there's only two brands that I trust to do the heavy lifting for audio for me Sony's one of them but let's throw all of this theory together and put it to the test in a video slash

Vlogging test see out there and welcome to the vlogging test of the sony a7s tube now we're actually doing this vlogging test at a different time of the day than we normally do it as we've meant and this is the low-light King so we are currently recording after sunset so it is about I have never done a vlogging test this dark before so I'm very excited to see how the footage looks because the other lowlife footage I've been getting out of the a7s2 it's mind-blowing I mean this thing is called the low-light King it definitely

Deserves that name like it is amazing but as a vlogging test there's a few things that you need to look for to see if this is a camera that you'd like to use for a handheld run-and-gun stuff one listen to the audio I currently have a rode videomic pro plus put on top of this thing I'm not as concerned because Sony cameras just they have really good internal preamps I never have a problem getting good audio out of a Sony number to check out the stabilization this lens is the Tamron 2275 so it does not have stabilization built into it but the a7s2

Does have in body image stabilization so is the stabilization good enough for you and three I mean you can't see it but there is no flip screen it's a Sony full-frame camera unfortunately I wish there was a flip screen there's not and another not even like fuji like fuji has the tally light so you can at least tell if you're actually recording i have no idea for recording or not i could just be out here talking myself in the backyard which i mean my neighbors think i do all the time anyway but i'm gonna be an okay vlogging camera okay back to the video and we're back and yes we did

That vlogging test at night just to put a little more strain on the sensor and man I'm just I'm so impressed I did that after like the Sun had gone down there was very little light and it just crushed it so good I mean so you can get pretty good image quality but what matters most to me is how easy is it to get that image quality now this generation of Sony cameras is a little more fiddly to use than the current ones it does have that older user interface I mean it's not as clearly broken down by functionality you can learn anything yes I've mentioned that here before but it

Is a little bit tougher to use it's a little more confusing if this is your first time using a Sony camera plus the a7s2 is lacking any sort of touchscreen interface meaning you do need to use all of the physical buttons and dials to get anything actually changed or your settings established but there is a big plus d7 s2 is kind of like a full-frame a 60 500 if you've ever used that camera in that it does have a couple of very clutch customizable buttons that make it so much easier to use I just like being able to set the buttons to do I like

Being able to customize cameras for me I don't like the companies making it the camera bead how they want it to be it also has standard physical buttons to assist with camera functionality like it's not that bad if you want physical buttons and dials it's no Fuji but it's pretty good now it does have a couple of really big negatives for ease-of-use one obviously it's a Sony full-frame camera it doesn't have any kind of flippable screen for monitoring so if you were trying to record yourself you just kind of have to hope that everything works out or you hook it up to a big TV so you

Can see what's going on as you're recording and – and really this is the biggest negative in my opinion this is the camera before Sony started using these z-type battery so the a7s2 uses the NP 50 battery which is okay for small aps-c cameras but that little battery I mean I can watch that battery die in real time on my aged 6400 and it's even worse when you try powering a huge full-frame camera with those little tiny batteries I mean they're just there's no power there that might not sound like a big problem and just bring more batteries right bring more

Batteries and you're good well if you're like me you forget to charge stuff all the time so if you forgot to charge them you're you're you're tough right or you have to set up multiple batteries for charging so that you've got it like it just makes a big hassle when you've got to bring like three or four batteries all the time it's not insurmountable but it is a bit of a hassle now after you hit record I break ease-of-use down into two parts the same problems poke their head around again and straight up the a7s2 kind of fails my fiddle enos test just like we saw in the vlogging test

There is no flip screen the stabilization is okay but again keep your gimbal and the autofocus does alright but it's not as reliable as Sony is known for today which is unfortunate so let's say you end up deciding to buy this camera because you are dying to record stuff in a cave or on the moon or you just spend all your money on this camera body and you can't actually afford lights now you've got this camera so what does the ecosystem slash upgrade path look like straight up this is something that Sony really did right in setting themself up for success

For the future now there is a lot of online hate about the longevity or viability of the e-mount next to canon and nikon is bigger more advanced mounts but if you buy a sony e-mount lens chances are that investment will be able to pay off for a long time to come with all of their new bodies that are coming out plus most of the excellent third-party development appears to be happening for the e-mount I mean the Tamron 17 to 28 and the 28 to 75 that we're using right now are key examples of third-party lenses how crazy is this third-party lenses that could make a

Body purchasing decision nuts right there are also cages battery grips and other accessories that can and do turn this camera into an absolute monster that's been used professionally since its release like it it is used today but at the end of the day so what right is the sony a7s – worth buying in 2019 for the online content creators only if you really need that obscene low-light recording capability I mean this is still a $2,000 body and it's missing some of the newer features from something like the a 6400 that we're going to be comparing it against later

This week or the a7 3 specifically against the a7 3 it's missing the newer bigger and wonderful z-type battery the great autofocus and the much better color science now that's not to say that the a7 2 is a bad camera it's not a bad camera by any stretch of the imagination and could and does get used today to make very great video but the thing is there are just so many other good options out there that I would not necessarily go into this unless you can get a screaming deal on it thanks for watching
