Is Android BORING in 2020?

by birtanpublished on August 17, 2020

These days smartphones themselves are capable of all kinds of amazing things but has the android os that powers billions of these devices become just a bit boring the idea that android updates are over or that the os has matured to the point

Where new versions don't really matter is not a new argument but it's become more prominent since google dropped the sweet treat nicknames with android 10 and sure getting rid of the fun dessert names and characters in favor of a cold

Harsh number is certainly a part of why people seem to care less about new android versions recently but that's not all there is to it this is actually something that's been

Brewing for quite some time to get a feel for how much things have changed let's go back to the early days of android almost a decade ago when early htc droid and samsung galaxy s phones were the new hotness

When a major new version of android launched back then you could expect big meaningful user-facing changes every single time take personal hotspot in android 2.2 froyo or the complete visual redesign

That we saw in 4.0 ice cream sandwich or the war on software lag that brought a huge performance jump in 4.1 jelly bean new android versions tended to be built around these major tentpole features

And the rapid development of android that brought this annual torrent of new features went hand in hand with the stratospheric rise of the smartphone in general as the number of people buying

Smartphones grew these devices became many people's primary computer and sometimes primary camera and primary media consumption device as well as such android needed to grow just as fast into an all-singing all-dancing

Operating system to accommodate this rapid change if you compare the way you used any major smartphone feature like browsing messaging and notifications or your phone's camera right now

To say 2010 or 2011 it's not surprising to see that the os on the phone you use today handles all those things very differently now a decade is a long time but compared to other industries like

The pc industry that's lightspeed change of course just because big sexy user-facing changes are less common in android today doesn't mean new platform versions aren't important there have been

Countless significant changes under the hood in the past two versions like the changes to storage access in android 11 to clamp down on unscrupulous apps or in android 10 the overhaul to

Android's permission system to make it easier to see and control what various apps are doing and let's not forget google's project treble in android 8 and project main line in android 10 that made it easier

For filmmakers to update the os without rebuilding their own interface from scratch if i had to point to an android version that signaled the end of these big user facing changes

I'd probably land somewhere around oreo in 2016. that was right around the time google introduced android's monthly security updates decoupling security from the os version

Number so you could still be up to date with the latest patches even on an older platform version at the same time google play services google service layer that could be updated independently of the os

Allowed newer features to come to older phones without a firmware update plus most of google's apps and even some component parts of android have been broken out and could be updated separately by the play store

Compare that to the situation back in 2011 where an update to many of the built-in apps required that rarest of things in android firmware updates the year that followed the launch of android oreo would also see the

Divergence of the google pixel's look and feel from bone stock android and a drift towards the more subtle material-themed design language with a more subdued aesthetic that didn't encroach too much on what

Manufacturers might want to build for their own ui layer compare that to the very opinionated very different look and feel of gingerbread and ice cream sandwich these were updates that drastically

Changed the way your phone and its apps looked and worked you really couldn't not notice the difference when you upgraded for most android owners the changes that followed android 9 pi and then android

10 were much more about refining what was already there than overhauling the ui the performance or the fundamental way android worked although like i said there were still big important changes under the hood

In fact the idea of big deal android updates has been a double-edged sword for google over the years a big splashy announcement of the new version with a cutesy name and accompanying bug droid statue is

Appealing especially to smartphone nerds like us but for google illuminating a new version of android also sean unwelcome lights on the platform's fragmentation issue

Google's official line on getting rid of the sweet treat names pointed to android being a global brand and english dessert names not necessarily making sense to a large chunk of those android users

In fact even if you were an english speaker it wasn't exactly intuitive that android pie for example is a more up-to-date release than android oreo so google probably doesn't mind that you're less fixated now on the next

Android update or on the features that you don't have from the current update if it's not on your device yet but in fact android updates are far more common now than they used to be

While there certainly are some stragglers out there big brands like samsung have trimmed months off the development time for major os updates and even smaller players are keeping on top of those android security patches

Update anxiety is just less of a thing in 2020 so do our android versions seem less important and more boring in 2020 than they were in 2010 absolutely that's partly because you're less likely to be waiting so long to get

Them thanks to project treble and other efforts it's also partly because of the move away from the cutesy names that embodied earlier android versions but mainly it's down to android's maturity and the

Maturity of the modern smartphone in general where past the period of stratospheric growth and change in phones which inevitably means settling into a different kind of upgrade cycle

Plus during that period of rapid change google has put in place other software like play services and android security patches that by design make that android version number much less important

So what do you think has android become more boring do you still care about being on the latest android version hit the comments and let us know and subscribe so you don't miss future videos

Thanks for watching and i'll see you next time
