iPhone 7 vs iPhone 8 – which should you buy? (2020 Comparison)

by birtanpublished on February 6, 2021

The iPhone 7 and 7 plus were released in 2016 whereas the iPhone 8 and 8 plus were released in 2017 the phones might look similar rent they are in a lot of ways but there are some key differences that make the 8 a decent upgrade hey how's it going I'm Josh from 91 tech and today we're talking about the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 8 how do they hold up and how do they compare straight off the bat I recommend buying the iPhone 8 or 8 plus over the 7 it's not that the 7 isn't good anymore it's just that I think the AIDS is enough of an upgrade to orange picking it up over

The 7 plus Apple isn't actually selling the 7 or 7 plus anymore on their website at least a brand new so if you want to get one you'll probably have to buy it used or from a carrier if they still have them in stock but regardless of that my overall recommendation is still the iPhone 8 or A+ it sets you up better in terms of longevity and more importantly in my opinion the base model has 64 gigabytes instead of 32 gigabytes on the iPhone 7 double the storage and it makes a big difference especially if you're someone who takes a lot of photos or video

You're gonna really appreciate those 64 gigabytes so for that reason alone I'd say the iPhone 8 is the better Buy but regardless let's delve into this a little bit deeper and talk about some of the key differences between the two phones the iPhone 7 and 7 plus both came out the year before the 8 and 2016 and were the first iPhones to get rid of the headphone jack they brought a much cleaner design as opposed to the iPhone 6 and 6s as well as a better camera a different but better home button and two stereo speakers the iPhone 8 and 8 plus came

Out right before the iPhone 10 and were essentially these same phones but with the older iPhone 6 type design they added a glass back which enabled wireless charging and they all said faster speeds a better camera and were capable of fast charging although fast chargers needed to be bought separately plus again the base model was boosted to 64 gigabytes from 32 these phones have most qualities in common especially on an external level for example if you take a case from an iPhone 8 or 8 plus it'll fit on the 7 or 7 plus and vice versa

Both phones have size options of either 4.7 inches or 5.5 inches there are some benefits to the plus model and so generally I'd say that's the phone to get but honestly if the smaller one is more comfortable in your hands and I mean it's cheaper so that one's definitely a good buy as well both the 7 and 8 plus have a second camera lenses that allow for two times zoom and portrait mode shots although it's worth mentioning that the 8 plus is portrait mode is better and gives a few more options another big benefit of plus size phones is that they're really good with

Battery life I switched from an iPhone 10 to a plus last year for about a month and the difference in battery life was amazing the A+ did a really good job Ivey 11pro max now so luckily my pottery is really good again but I couldn't believe how well the A+ performed even compared to my 10s it was a lot better the only other significant difference between the smaller and bigger phones is that the bigger ones have an extra gigabyte of RAM honestly you'll probably never notice it and in day-to-day use you'd be hard-pressed to find much

Differences they have the same chipset and iOS is really well optimized so they both perform really well overall if you're torn on whether or not you should get a smaller iPhone or bigger one as in say 8 versus 8 plus I'd say you should go for the one that fits it better in your hand yes the A+ is the better phone and the battery life is a big big improvement but they're more expensive so if the smaller one fits better in your hand and you like it get that one and of course there's a question of whether or not you want the iPhone 7 or 8 or the iPhone 10 R which is cheaper

This year or the 11 which is cheaper than the 10 R was last year I'd say if you're looking at an A+ brand new the 10 R is probably the better deal considering on Apple's website it's only $50 more expensive but this video is about the iPhone 7 versus the aid so let's continue with that and let's go over the cameras really briefly the cameras are gonna offer really similar performance both having 12 megapixels in their rear main sensors the iPhone 7 can film in 4k at 30 frames per second while the 8 can do up to 4k at 60 frames per second this is a big improvement if

You're really into video creation but if you're not much for taking video and dart a youtuber or someone who needs great video I would not worry about it honestly for most people I'd recommend shooting in 1080p anyways because it takes less storage and it's good enough they also have better slow-mo on the iPhone 8 with 1080p at up to 240 frames per second as opposed to 120 frames per second on the 7 again I wouldn't really worry about that it's not a huge jump and the quality is pretty similar across the two phones and photos will look pretty much the same to both with the

Back sensor and selfie camera these phones came out only a year apart and so as you'd expect camera improvements are incremental and won't make much of a difference in day-to-day picture taking this goes for selfies too with both selfie cameras being 7 megapixels moving to performance we have the a10 chipset in the iPhone 7 and the a 11 in the iPhone 8 as per usual the a 11 is a pretty decent upgrade for the 8:10 although not a massive one regardless though both phones are super fast when I was 13 and you'll likely very very rarely experience slowdowns

Right now there's hardly a difference between the two phones when you use them like if you use them side-by-side they perform very similarly but this won't always be the case the iPhone 8 probably will be supported for longer by at least a year and it will likely be faster for longer as well I think the iPhone 8 has a good chance of getting at least an extra year over the iPhone 7 in part because the iPhone 10 came out the same year and has the same specs so it would make sense that it got supported just for a little longer I would say the 7 should get software

Updates until 2021 at least although I could very well see it going to 2022 and the 8 will probably get one year past that if longevity is important to you the iPhone 8 is definitely the better buy I'd say overall the iPhone 8 is kind of like the perfected design of 2014's iPhone 6 and while it doesn't offer that much over the iPhone 7 I do think it's a better experience and therefore is a better buy plus it has double the storage on the base model and I mean it's hard to argue with not again Apple no longer sells the iPhone 7 whereas the iPhone 8 is four hundred and fifty

Dollars brand new that's not a terrible price although I'd recommend getting a deal on contract or maybe buying one used of course again the iPhone 7 might be available from your carrier and if you get a steal of a deal on that then I would not blame you for jumping on it if you are looking at the used market the iPhone 8 usually goes for around $300 on ebay.com whereas the 7 goes for around $200 keep in mind I'm talking about the smaller models here and that the plus will be more expensive on both the 7 and 8 and so while the 7 looks like a better deal at 200 versus 300 for the iPhone 8

Got to keep in mind the iPhone 8 not only has all its improvements but again it doubles that storage so that really is a big thing for me if you're looking to buy a phone for maybe your brand parents or your parents or something to that extent having that extra storage for them especially it's gonna be really helpful because you can take a lot more photos and same goes if you're buying it for yourself so for a bit more money not only are you getting the better phone but double the storage that right there is the reason you should get the iPhone 8 over the iPhone 7 the 7 is still a

Good phone by the way and I don't think you'll regret buying it I just think the iPhone 8 is better value a link individual reviews I've done to both phones in the description below alternatively again you could go for the iPhone 10 R or 11 I would really recommend looking at the 10 R if you're considering the 8 plus both of those phones I think right now are the best of value iPhones I mean the 10 are for 600 bucks is really good especially when you look at the 8 plus at 550 but with that I'm pretty much done here so conclusion the iPhone 8 is the better buy it isn't

That much better of a phone but I do think it's better value and the 7 is still a great phone and so if you pick it up but I'm sure you will like it if you found this video helpful or interesting maybe hit that like button and consider subscribing for more content just like this you can follow me over on twitter and instagram at 91 underscore tech if you'd like to prove some reason and with that all being said thank you so much for watching i'm josh from ninety one tech and i will see you all next time
