HP Omen 15 Review (2018)

by birtanpublished on May 21, 2021

This is Lisa from mobile tech review and this is the 2018 HP omen 15 there are actually two different designs for 2018 look confusing right they came out with a single long hinge design and on the two hinge design that brings the barely-there bezels and a smaller chassis pretty cool there by the way this video is sponsored by LastPass we'll have more on that later doctoral omen so this is Intel eighth generation coffee like Cisco six core CPU that you would expect to see in here core i7 you got a variety of GPUs what's interesting about this is usually manufacturers if they make a lower load mid-range gaming

Laptop and then they have a high end range that they switch a C's which means casings designs for those who don't speak marketing speak in this case HP goes with the same design and this thing can be had as low as around eight hundred and fifty dollars all the way up to almost $2,000 competing with a Lea where's interesting we're gonna look at it now so the Allman 15 has a host of reasonably premium features for a gaming laptop except for a fingerprint scanner something that you just don't find on gaming laptops unfortunately speaking of security looking up passwords getting

Locked out of accounts putting post-it notes everywhere with your passwords please tell me you don't do that anymore in keeping track of myriad passwords please tell me you are using myriad passwords is no fun by our sponsor last pest has the answer to this LastPass lets you use and keep track of strong passwords not your dog's name for every account or your spouse's name and if you need to you can even grant shared access you know just in case your spouse or whoever it is you trust that you think needs access to that important data it works on every platform there's browser

Extensions there's Mac OS there's windows there's even Linux and of course iOS and Android as well be sure to check out the link below to find out more about LastPass so you can put it all in autopilot for your brain to think about important things like what's the next laptop or smartphone you're gonna buy thanks again to our sponsor back to a review so in addition to those tiny barely-there bezels that are so trendy and I mean they do look good except for the bottom edge like most gaming laptops it's a big bottom bezel there we've got something else that's new but we've got

Four zone backlighting for the keyboard optional so the last design was dragon red as I call this we had red masking on the keys and red back lightning so now yeah we don't happen to have that option but there is an option for white key masking so it looks a little more chill when you go to work and for zones of backlighting which is really three zones plus the WASD Keys are programmable separately nice little touch for those who want to look a little more chill that said from the outside the laptop is what people call aggressive looking which might be a

Euphemism for gamer looking but in this case I think they have such a unique kind of out there in cool design that it's more like futuristic side file it looks like something out of Mass Effect on the upcoming game anthem more than just a gaming laptop that's black plastic with red accents and you've got the different surface textures on top which is cool too you've got that carbon fiber kind of thing you've got that brushed aluminum look I kind of like it actually and I don't think it's tasteless or anything like you couldn't take this to work sort of look that said

And this is a little bit of a gotcha for a laptop that runs the gamut from being budget introductory gamer with a GTX 1050 inside all the way up to a gtx 1070 max-q running in that price range the fact that the chassis is mostly plastics is perfectly fine if you're paying around thousand or even twelve hundred dollars for gaming laptop but when you're getting up to two thousand dollars I don't know I don't feel as awesome about that especially when they're going up against Alienware in that price range – and obviously MSI who's not the best at making classy

Looking laptops either but we're starting to see a whole lot of change right we've got the Razer Blade 15 even more expensive obviously its Lumina miuna body we're not gonna go that high in the price range but we've got things like the MS IGS 65 stealth in looking pretty classy these days 2 gigabyte arrow 15 X you get the idea so at the higher end probably this is gonna excite folks less but I think the sweet spot for this is something around $1200 where you get that core i7 dish 8750 h6 core cpu get in coffee like and you can get an NVIDIA GTX 1060 full 1060 graphics

Now be careful with HP they do something very weird if you look at their website a GTX 1060 usually comes with 6 gigabytes of gddr5 vram they have a cheaper version of it with only three gigs of VRAM I don't recommend that the price difference is like 50 or $70 and I think they're just doing this for people who don't know enough and aren't paying attention we have the old design as well as the new design on this one now the old design is a little bit bigger and footprint just a little bit heavier doesn't have the cool bezels and had

Some different configuration options like they had a GTX 1060 max Q which is what we have in ours now that's not an option with the new design it gets very confusing I don't know why HP is doing this they continued to sell both designs again we're gonna focus more on the newer design though so full GTX 1064 around 1200 pretty nice you can go up to that gtx 1070 max q that we have that adds like $450 to the base price tag though so it's a big spend on this laptop I might go at the ten sixty because I'm not sure it's worth the price difference here unless you're

Going to a fold gtx 1070 there's that typical gaming laptop you have to Ram slots ddr4 26 66 megahertz Ram so versatile enough you can go up to 32 gigs of ram if you want those 16 gigs is pretty much the sweet spot for gaming laptops what is nice for the price though even if you go with one of the lower-priced SKUs but not the very base that has no SSD at all if you do get an SSDs an m2 PCIe nvme SSD is pretty fast SSD and there's a one terabyte 7200 rpm hard drive in the lower price ranges you usually see a 5400 rpm drives so that's nice if they're at least giving you a

Faster hard drive and some of you watching these gaming laptop reviews ask why there's even a hard drive well that's because games take up 50 60 gigs of space you need affordable abundant storage that's why it exists another nice thing about the HP is usually when you still get a hard drive bay in a gaming laptop and they want to keep it kind of thin and light which this one is about 26 no Nader's about an inch thick and under six pounds they cut the battery to make more space and to make it lighter well in this case you have a 70 watt hour battery which is

Pretty decent it's not as big as the maximum Alienware a battery that you can get but it's as big as a smaller anywhere 15 battery and certainly a lot better than a lot of the other budget thin and lights that have something in the 50s in terms of watt hour for battery this one has a chance to actually last longer another cool thing is that there's a full HD matte yes display okay that's pretty normal for these gaming laptops the base is sixty Hertz refresh rate but we have the hundred and forty four Hertz option they've added with the new chassis

Redesigned so as you know especially if you are going with a more powerful GPU you if you've got frame rates going above sixty frames per second well you can actually enjoy it when you have a faster refresh the spike response times are pretty good on them too and ours is an LG pounds the same one that's used in the gigabyte Aero 15 X which is a more premium laptop so they've done a good job here and that display which is about seventy bucks more than the base I would recommend it just because it has really good color gamut for most gaming laptops in the budget range you see pretty sad

Color gamut like 65% of srgb and 50% of Adobe RGB well this one is what you would expect to see in a thousand dollar premium Ultrabook which is to say 95% of it s RGB and 75% of Adobe RGB it's a good panel so for those of you who are thinking about content creation it's usable for that too they also do have a 4k option again this goes with the fact that they're running a gamut of price ranges here in one single chassis it's kind of unusual in this to see that but for those who are looking for 4k and that should be a pretty nice panel to now it's gonna cost you even more of

Those it's gonna be about a 170 dollar up charge ports are abundant on this as you'd expect for a gaming laptop right so you have Gigabit Ethernet you have hdmi 2.0 a you have USB C and some of the higher-end configurations like ours it's Thunderbolt 3 and you have a mini DisplayPort so for those who are multi monitor madness people you can have up to three external displays going on this there's an SD card slot for content creators plenty of USB a port so you get the idea so for those who have in need all around sort of desktop replacement in a not really huge package this would

Be in so you know there's two different backlighting keyboard options for this to hinge newer design another thing is is 26 key rollover so it's got a good response in other words when you're gaming you're not gonna worry about hitting multiple keys at once I like the feel of it travel is good it feels pretty crisp and pretty firm just as something that you probably are buying because you also need to need to type on it it feels good for that the synaptics trackpad is also quite good it's better than the average gaming laptop say in the $1200 segment where they tend

Have you know trackpads very reliable tracks well no complaints whatsoever about that trackpad stereo speakers by Bang & Olufsen here and it supports DTS headphone X audio output again better than the class average they're pretty loud and they're pretty full which is nice they certainly beat MSI who's thin and light laptop speakers tend to be pretty darn anemic and lacking in bass so what about heat and noise gaming laptops with Intel coffee like eighth generation CPUs tends to not do so well here and this is no exception you know when running benchmarks like

The fire strike 3dmark benchmark it actually is a little cooler than average by playing games it will reach thermal maximum from the CPU core temperatures no problem in more demanding games or the most demanding great games that are available to tell you like far cry 5 I've been talking about 97 to 99° centigrade on those courts this is endemic for Intel eighth generation slim gaming laptops it isn't just HP oddly while we had it there was a BIOS update to f05 the latest version that was supposed to improve thermals what it did is actually made it run a

Bit hotter but keep the clock speeds even higher so they gave you more performance at the expense of heat if you do get the max Q model you can at least run in whisper mode that limits you to 60 frames per second but it will run cooler if you're running all your games are less demanding games it won't be as hot if you're getting something with a GTX 1050 or 1050 T I'm those GPUs make a lot less heat so you won't see as much thermal issue here the fans are pretty darn honorable if you are gaming and that's not unusual for gaming laptop these days so I can't say that it's much

Worse than average they're not annoying whiny screechy or anything like that but you certainly hear them on there two beefy fans inside when it comes to battery life usually that's not the first thing people worry about with a gaming laptop but with these more portable laptops and the fact that this one has a bigger than average battery versus the competition the story is pretty good we have Nvidia Optimus and ours and switchable graphics and better than average sized battery means that for productivity and light use and streaming video this one can go about

Five-and-a-half hours on battery power that's pretty darn decent and it beats a lot of the competition that can only manage four to four and five and that's 115 it brightness setting which is what we use for all of our battery metrics for what it's worth with the new style omen design you also get an updated charger that's well prettier looking it looks like the HP Spectre charger taking a look at the underside nice ventilation over here this is pretty much cosmetic so to open it up your mood Philips head screws that are visible the two over here are gonna be

The longer screws and then you have to pry and it is not easy to pry this off I use the iFixit pry tool the one that looks or like a clam knife and I ignored HP service manual that had such weird instructions as pressing on the trackpad and shaking the unit to loosen the cover it yeah well anyway don't do that just pry carefully now get the lid off so the underside looks like and here our internals with to very large fans pretty pretty impressive there I like that then our two heat pipes running over here see for the CPU and the GPU there's the battery that big thing is always our

Hard drive bay alright Wi-Fi cards socketed right over here our m2 PCIe nvme SSD by the way if you give this with a hard drive only base configuration it does support Intel octane memory and here underneath the shield are our two RAM slots and ddr4 26 66 megahertz of your maximum would be 32 gigs and under here we have much to say just some heat pipe action notice with this redesign that HP moved a bunch of the ports to the back you still just have USBA on this side and your headphone and microphone jacks but most of the other ports are going to be on

The rear which is like the original omen from years and years ago and a lot like the Lenovo y5 and pretty typical this sort of design we have our down inside firing stereo speakers right here Bang & Olufsen branded one thing to note as you saw from the the cover well the fans are gonna suck in from the bottom through here and they're going to exhaust out the rear so the good news is like most gaming laptops it's gonna shoot the air out the back away from you but don't put this on the blankets on covers you get the idea don't stifle the air intakes on

This laptop so that's the HP omen 15 for 2018 again the second design that they've offered this year and I know there's a sea of these mid-range gaming laptops and it can be very confusing because the specs are nearly identical so what sets this one apart is number one the design if you love it you love it and if it is pretty cool-looking but beyond that it's one of the few that has really skinny bezels also nice and Lenovo y50 on that does that but this one also has a larger than average battery inside and that 144 hoards despite option and Thunderbolt 3

So they're depending on how much you wanted to spend in which configuration you buy then this one is pretty darn good for the price at least for mobile tech review be sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more cool tech videos and thumbs up if you like this bin
