How To Repair a Drywall Patch

published on July 9, 2020

First step is to open the hole let thedrywall dry out this may take two orthree days if you have a small fan to bebeneficial next step is you just take abit of blocking and we're gonna slidethis in here in this case I've got to

Get it underneath the water supply lineswhen I'm doing a hole less than 12 by 12inches I'd use a California patch whichis just piece of drywall with wings Ialways like to add blocking wheneverpossible just to give it a little extra

Strength but the trick here is onlytaking a piece of drywall and cutting itdown to size that's usable so we aregoing to just eyeball thiscut that in half when you're cuttingyour drywall you're not really cutting

Right through it you're just scoring itthat's all you have to do so make mymark just got to cut the paper break itin halfgot the paper again now we have thepiece that we want if you want your

Piece to be about two inches larger oneach side than the actual hole you'recovering you just hold it up to the holework just inside where the hole is andthen follow that line acrosssame for the other direction

Put it up mark the hole just insidescore the paperthen this is gonna seem ridiculous butthen you just break it on that line andthen using your fingers you put pressureon the drywall and peel it off the paper

From your backsidethis will be my paper tape it's thinnerthan traditional drywall tape it'salready attached to the patch so reducesthe amount of time that it's gonna taketo repair this now this obviously was a

Little bit bigger than me to be able tostrip that extra so now we go up and wejust confirm that it fits inside thehole and it does so for this particularsituation we're working in a finishedkitchen doing drywall work is missing so

We're going to use the cgc dust controlmud it's a pretty good product itdoesn't finish quite as smooth andpretty as traditional mud but becausewhen you sand everything falls straightdown it's a lot easier to control the

Mess that you're gonna make when youfinish up after you prime you can do alittle bit of a touch-up generally it'snecessary you get little pinholes so youwant a good finish you have to do sometouch-up after the prime but this is

Perfect for what we're doing todayit comes pre-mixed we'll just throw acouple of dollops see here on our Hawkthese hoardin work the mud before youapply it you want to just kind of workit up a little bit it loosens up if you

Like you can also add just a littletouch of water in there that'll helpmake it a little bit wetter make surethat it's gonna get a good bond withthat paper that way you don't get airbubbles that you'll have to repair later

So the trick here is to apply the mud tothe ceilingaround the patch it also add the crackfill that side so it has something tobond to so just before you put it up puta little bit of muddle on the outside

Perimeter of your patch that will justmake sure that you get a really goodbond and won't cracknow because we have blocking in the wallonce I put this up I'm also going toattach it with a screw

Okay now we're gonna take our knifewe're gonna gently place the paper inthe mud now I'm gonna stretch it out nowI have more tape than I need here so I'mjust gonna cut a little bit of this offbit away from that light fixture

When you're doing drywall mud patch lessis moreokay so it's not gonna look pretty afterthe first coat but you don't wanna puttoo much mud on there you'll causethings to lift and separate you'll also

Have big bumps so they don't have toanymore but as we did it then we letthat dry so because this is really quitesimple let's assume this is dry reallyall you have to do then after that let'sjust fill the inside gap okay

Just nice and quick like that let thatdry usually overnight is what it takescome back the day after that and you'lljust go like this over the entire patchand then you'll smooth it out they havea nice finish obviously this is all

Still soaking wet so it's hard to showyou but if you look that good even whilethat's soaking wet when it's allfinished use just a light sand and paintin your finish if you're enjoying thesevideos subscribe to the channel hit the
