How to Hook up a Washer and Dryer

published on July 13, 2020

Hey it's Jeff from home renovation DIYand today we are here to install awasher and dryer now I know it's notrocket science and for many of youyou're gonna be like wow what's there tolearn about washers and dryers theanswer is not a whole lot not much as

Changes in the world of applianceinstallation but I'm gonna run throughthis real quick because there's alwayspeople out there in the YouTube worldwho are new homeowners are new toappliances or new to taking care of

Their own house and so this is for youguys alright we're gonna go through thereal basics washer and dryer are reallysimple hookups it's a universalsituation so no matter where you areyour power supply and your exhaust is

Already gonna be in place all you got todo is connect them now your washingmachine is basically the first thing youhave to hook up because it has a drainit's gonna have a drain location youmight even have a box in the wall that

Has a little black pipe sticking out ofit that is where this thing goesnow these are all on little connectorson the back packing tape of course andyou really just stick that in the holethat simple right

The only other thing you've got here todeal with is you also have a powersupply and it's just a regular cord okayand there should be a plug in thevicinity to power that up and got tolove those new modern plugs you got to

Push equal amount of pressure in eachside or that doesn't let you in and ofcourse if you go out and you buy a hosekit they may or may not be color codedso it's very important to pay attentionto the back machine there's generally

Gonna be little blue and red plasticthings or there's gonna be words or apicture make sure you connect the hot tothe hot and the cold to the cold andthat is about all there is to know thewater supply hooks up like a garden hose

Make sure you have your black washers inplace if you don't have the washers runback to the store real quick go to theplumbing department they'll sell youhose washers which is what that's calledalright you just finger tighten it grab

Yourself a wrench and give it anotherusually quarter to half turn makepositive contact with the hose youtitin not really really over and overand over again all you're doing iscompressing the washer to the point

Where it's almost useless and youincrease the risk of having a foot sowe'll get the hot line on as well nowjust a trick when you're working withthese things instead of trying to justthread it on if you go backwards just

Really slow you'll feel it and pushyou'll feel it sit into place so as itgrabs the thread then you can tighten alot of the situation's here especiallyon the machine it's going to be plasticand if you cross thread it which is you

Go on an angle when you're tightening ityou're gonna bend all the threads overand you won't be able to go to good luckand your machine is going to needmaintenance before you even get startedall right so here we go so we just push

It up against the end and go outcounterclockwise while you're pushingwith your left hand and you should beable to hear thisright there that's where it seats inplace and then you can tighten it up now

You know your threads are all in lineand everything is gonna be just finesame thing extra quarter to a half ohthere we goall right here it is now if you're notholding it the right angle you won't get

That click won't sit in the right spotjust be patient with it you'll get iteventuallyhere's my half and now we can test itthat easy pressurize the lines you cansee we've got a bit of a drip here we'll

Add another halfthis is a perfect time if you develop alittle bit of a drip that means thewasher doesn't have enough compressionand the waters probably gonna seep outright here at this joint just give it a

Little bit of a tighten not gonna be anissue all right there we gothat's perfect so we have our dischargehose is there now are hot and are coldor power supply that unit is ready to beused

Oh really the only thing left to dobefore you turn it on is remove all ofthe packaging before you run yourmachine for the first time just makesure you take care to get all the extratape and sticky stuff and protectors off

And the reason for that is if you run ahot load first some of the times theseadhesives are really difficult to cleanoffwhen it comes to the dryer what you needis basically to connect the exhaust part

At the bottom telling maybe one up herewhen you're in the basement it's gonnabe coming out of the ceiling or goingthrough the wallin a lot of cases if it's on the mainfloor upstairs they'll install it right

Through the wall about four or fiveinches off the ground so you can go outand buy just an elbow this a four inchelbow and it has a adjustable parts soyou can make minor adjustments and youcan slide it right into the wall but in

Our situation we need an eight-footaccordion now the way you want to dothis for the installation is we have agear clamp here all right and we'regonna be compressing the metal rings onthe foil ducting around the pipe okay

Nice and simple it should just slip overwithout too much difficulty so it's abit of irony there used to be a piece ofpipe sitting here and they had some foiltape on it the foil tape wasinterrupting with my ability to slide

That over so then I cut all that backand now the cut pipe has just got a bitof a jagged line on it and I can't slidemy foil over so I'm using my crimperhere now just to change the diameter ofmy pipe and if you haven't seen this

Before these tool will save your baconit has three on the top and two on thebottom so every time you compress youtake a couple inches of pipe and yousqueeze it into a smaller diameter sonow this will slide over oh that's what

I'm talking about so much easier yeahnow that we got this up here we'll takeour deer clamp and we'll slide it up Ilike to make sure your crimp yourtighten out on but two rung soundsalright if you have them around take one

Of these little self tapping screws bumpup a bomb you buy them in the littlesection of the hardware store they haveall the duct work and run it justunderneath that gear clampand that will pinch it in place so that

It can't slide off or be tugged off overtime and you can be confident it'salways going to stay there all right nowthe dryer already has the crimp on ityou can see so this should be a littlebit easier going here should be we'll

See what happens again you want to getthe first couple of metal runs over thatokay okay so the last thing with atraditional dryer of course is a powersupply all right now it has a uniquepattern on the plug so you just have to

Match that up with the wall install giveit a good shot yeah you know what Idon't want to have that interruptingwhen I push it back now there's oneother thing you might want to know it'sa lot of dryers today are coming out

With a special feature where theyactually bring hot water to the dryerand they're adding a little bit ofmoisture slike a steaming function soyou have to hook up to the hot watersupply in that situation they'll supply

You with a kit in that kit they're gonnahave this little hose here whichconnects to the hot water and they'regonna have a splitter so you can havehot water to the washing machine andthen another hose that goes to the dryer

If that is your case they should supplythat in the dryer this is actually forthe another unit but I just wanted toshow you that in case you run into thatsituation well no that was quick andsimple all we got to do is push it back

In please take off all the protectivewrapping and I like to push with my kneedown the bottom you're gonna see you'regonna have to give yourself about 4 or 5inches of space here for the ductworkokay and just for aesthetics we'll pull

The machines to be flushthat's pretty so if you found thatinformation helpful at all then hit thethumbs up don't forget if you haven'tsubscribed to our channel yet please doso we have a lot of great content coming
