How to get custom themes on Android 8.0 Oreo with Substratum’s Andromeda and no root

by birtanpublished on September 7, 2020

If you ever wanted to theme your Android operating system without obtaining root or flashing a custom ROM then you're in luck the team behind the popular substratum themed engine have come up with a way for custom themes that you can download from the Play Store to work

On unrooted android oreo devices even though almost every phone besides google's or oneplus don't have this update just yet it is nice to know that stock Android now supports custom deeming so in the future you will have

More control on how you would like your UI to look for starters I was able to theme everything on my Google pixel besides the boot animation and system-wide font aside from per app font emoji changing

As these two items require root access I was able to change the overall look of the settings quick settings tiles notifications lockscreen navigation bar recent menu and more I was even able to a theme on a per hour basis so for

Example when I enable a theme called outline I was able to change the look of the Play Store calculator YouTube backdrops Gmail messages and more so now the possibilities for customizing on Android are wider than ever making this

Work is also not that hard you just download two apps substrata theme engine which is basically library for all of your overlays and andromeda which is an add-on package to allow you to enable these custom themes without a rooted

Device it is $2.49 but it's worth every penny especially since the developers have put so much time and effort into this amazing project lastly make sure to download the Andromeda a desktop client for your Windows Linux or Mac and

Extract the dot zip file if you're on a PC next enable USB debugging on your smartphone by going into the settings system about phone and tapping the build number seven times go back and look for developer options and enable USB

Debugging then open the Andromeda app on your phone and connect your phone to your desktop over on your PC open the Andromeda client folder and run starts underscore and dromeda dot bat file after you press any key you'll see a

Bunch of adb commands and the substratum application will automatically open up on your phone that's it you can now manage and enable themes without Roo and without needing to be tethered to your computer if you want to verify that the

Script work just open the Andromeda app once again and connection status should now be green and say connected to install a custom theme just go to the Showcase menu in the substratum application or search substrata

Themes in the Playstore find the one you like download install it but make sure you don't install the ones that mention legacy you or rro as these themes won't work on your unrooted device then select the theme you just installed within the

Substratum app and toggle the overlays the overlays in ten of system UI qsr style icons and system UI status bar icons are still broken so for now leave those disabled but from there tap the paint roller floating button and build

An enable after a short time your UI we'll look drastically different and beautiful hopefully in case it looks weird or you just want to restore your stock theme then just open up the sidebar menu in

The substratum app recovery restore theme and uninstall all installed overlays lastly just do the same steps discussed previously to enable a different theme the last thing I want to let you know is that if you reboot your

Phone the andromeda service will be killed your current set theme won't be affected at all but if you want to switch to a different theme or recover your stock UI after a reboot you just have to plug your phone into your

Computer and run the script all over again this shouldn't take more than a couple seconds either way I hope you guys enjoy theming your unrooted Android Oreo device let me know in the comments what subscribe team you enjoy using and
