How Long Should You Keep Your Phone? The answer SHOCKED me!

by birtanpublished on November 25, 2020

So a couple of days ago I was talking to my friendly Ron and we were talking about some different ideas for videos and one of the things he came up with as we were talking to each other was asking people when they upgrade their phones thought it'd be pretty cool so I made a community tab questionnaire for you guys a poll that you guys could vote on and some of you voted on which is kind of crazy because I actually expected about a thousand people or so to give their responses well three thousand of you showed up and gave me your feedback and interestingly as I was making the post you're only allowed to do four different

Options for different questions in the poll like what your answers will be and when I started with what every one year every two year three year it might last one I just kind of threw out there I actually wanted to go year by year but once I got to the fourth one I just kind of threw one out there but I didn't think you would vote it and it was the second most popular answer we got to break that down because that's an interesting one I want to tell you what that answer was and why it's so interesting right after this what players welcome back and for all you new

People welcome my name is Travis and I do tech videos every single week and have a blast doing or that sounds like fun to you sit back relax and enjoy the video anything I talk about will be in the description below but for now let's just get into the video so yeah I asked you guys and gals when you upgraded your phone how often and why and I got so much feedback on this that I thought it would make a great video idea now here's the thing a lot of you said that you would like to upgrade more often than you actually do especially if money wasn't a problem and then I asked

Another survey later which I'll probably do a separate video on asking you how much your phone costs and there were some interesting things that came out of that as well and when that video comes out I'll definitely put it in the endcard of this video but having said that we're talking about how often people will upgrade now I think I should split this video up into a couple of sections including once versus needs like how often should you upgrade your phone now by and large this will actually change for each person like it's a personal thing but there are some

Things you should keep in mind when considering to upgrade and there is a cadence that makes sense as a matter of fact that cadence kind of follows what most of you said is the number one answer for how often you upgrade and the number one answer was two years now that cadence is actually a holdover from back when you had to buy phones on a contract and not a contract like you might see today which isn't really a contract with the company it's more of a pay off plan but a contract with the actual phone carrier it didn't matter if you paid the

Phone off because you were locked in you were locked into that carrier and that's what John Legere came and completely changed the entire industry of mobile he went to t-mobile became the CEO and got rid of that got rid of all the contracts and then instead of making it like a two-year contract in the industry it was a two-year pay off of your phone which ends up being the same thing but if you buy your own phone gumming there you don't have to sign a contract and a lot of people might not remember that they might not remember that you actually had contracts on carriers so here's the

Thing a lot of people are still doing that every two years because they're used to that and they're paying off their phones in two years that is until more recently when the really expensive phones take three years to pay off but in the meantime it's it's like third number two is way different but before I get to number two let's talk about why on Android that's probably more significant than iOS and here we come with needs in my mind in my estimation you should absolutely upgrade once security patches stop now I'm not talking about operating system upgrades

And on Android that tends to be every two years for operating systems and most manufacturers will do you know carrier upgrades for security patches for a year or two after that but not all of them do so in my mind as soon as the security patches stop coming you should upgrade there are some really crazy exploits on phones that you need to patch up immediately so how do you know when that time is to come now you might need to do some research on YouTube or on Google and search hey it does my phone get any more updates and sometimes depending on the manufacturer of your phone you may

Not be able to figure it out but for Android it's a safe bet two years at least security updates for another year or two after that ish depending on the manufacturer Samsung has been pretty good about that but anyone else just consider it two years I've alone the other hand has been good for five to six years I mean iOS 14s coming out in a couple of weeks at least the beta and one of the things we found out about that at least from the leaks is that it's going to support the iPhone 6s which that phone is like five years old so as far as the need you actually don't

Need to upgrade that phone unless the one thing happens that more than 20% of you said which is the real reason that you do upgrade the number two answer for why most people upgrade out of the 3000 people that voted is when their phone stops working that's right has nothing to do with time but when their phone stops working now I came up with this answer just off top of my head I'd even really consider it to be a real answer but it turns out it's actually more accurate than I thought I've recently started working with a company named ting to save you money on

Mobile I'll leave a link to description below if you use most of your phone calls and text on Wi-Fi like if he's Wi-Fi calling and stuff you actually save a lot of money and I'll save me another $25 have you is the link in description below traversing calm this isn't sponsored by them but I am an affiliate so if you click the link I'll get some kickback but here's the important part they actually also did a serving I didn't know this before I did my survey and their results came up to be pretty much like mine they came up with a my phone wasn't working as well

As before and my phone was broken damaged or lost those were actually the number one and number two answers in their poll which you could almost argue was my answer to i said it stops working or it's broken which is kind of the same thing now the one thing that is different is when people say that it doesn't work as well as before that used to be a thing on android especially with samsung phones not so much anymore i've noticed that samsung phones are doing a pretty good job of staying fast and snappy over the last two years or so now we do have to

Pay attention to the type of people who would answer the different polls so for my channel i have i do videos on basically flagships and budget phones whereas ting is a budget carrier so of course their answer is going to be more in line with lasting staying with their phones longer so let's just dig into the actual comments on my poll to see why people are upgrading Kenny says whenever it breaks I'm still rocking the s8 plus they all do what I need to do and also I have a note 8 with a busted screen and since it has Dex I connected to a TV is my primary media center every once a

While someone is just crazy and upgrades all the time like the highest every six months to a here I get my yes 10 March 2019 then I get to note 10 in October and I plan to get the fold – well you ballin and I love this answer way too often Cory says finally had to stop using my note for good googly goo WA Note 4 and got a note 9 I needed a headphone jack and the price was right and I actually did a video on the galaxy note 9 and renewed on Amazon here on this channel you might want to check that out I'll leave a link in the description below

Rodney says when it breaks usually about three to five years after purchasing the phone so there's a when it breaks kind of option now three to five years your phone breaks in three years well that isn't even the crazy one Mary Ann says when it breaks and it's not functioning him anymore or stolen about every two years Mary Ann now here live in the hard life losing their getting her phone stolen every two years and it breaks every two years Mary Ann that life is hard Kyra says whenever I really need to like if my screen is smashed the phone is

Locked or my phone is just not working so around two to three years so what we're finding is that while a lot of people are actually upgrading every two to three years even those people are waiting until the phone either doesn't work or is broken or doesn't function right so the number one answer which is every two years might actually be the number four answer which is in second place which is when it's broken that puts it more in line with ting survey this is actually kind of mind-bending I'm actually amazed at this being the

Real reason now as a tech reviewer obviously I get as many phones as I can but even before this I would get a new phone every year because I'm one of them on one of those jump plans with t-mobile where you you get a new phone every year whatever by upgrading I just like to be on the cutting edge but not everyone sees these as some type of like a fashion accessory or something they see them as a tool and that's really what it comes down to when should you upgrade your phone well realistically when it stops working for you whether that be it literally stops working or it doesn't do

The things you need it to do pretty much any phone nowadays and especially all the budget phones I've even covered this year can do everything you need it to do we can take pictures they can go on social media they can do videos it can you can do everything like everything even a two hundred dollar phone I reviewed a $250 phone which is absolutely amazing the TCL 10l you might want to check that video out to the point is this upgrade when you need to not just because and it seems like less and less people are upgrading because it's a cool

Thing to do and really just waiting Italy absolutely positively me to leave me a comment below when do you upgrade how often do you upgrade and why matter of fact tell me a story when's the last time you upgrade it and why did you upgrade was it because maybe an iPhone had an extra camera or was it because your phone was smashed and look like trash like I said earlier I have another survey going on right now that asks how much the phone is that you currently have and based on the early results of

That it seems like most of you are getting expensive phone so it makes sense to hold on to them longer especially if it breaks or something but the question is should you buy the insurance for your phone have you have you ever done that maybe through Geek Squad or your your mobile carrier or whatever if you have let me know in the description below and here's a video here that you're definitely not gonna want to miss I'll see you again next time peace and love
