Hot Take: Surface Duo – The Microsoft Phone we weren’t expecting
Today Microsoft held its surface event where it announced a bunch of new surface products the surface pro 7 the surface earbuds the surface pro X and even its own chipset developed by Qualcomm with instant on power all-day battery life and LTE but for us here at
GSM arena the biggest news is that Microsoft is re-entering the smartphone industry and it may have even created a whole new category for itself I'm Ricky and this is my hot take on the Microsoft Surface duo phone along with
Updated surface pro hardware Microsoft announced its first piece of hardware with dual displays the surface neo it has dual 9 inch screens and a flip-up versatile keyboard with Microsoft's potentially more useful version of
Apple's touch bar but then Microsoft announced something that nobody was expecting the surface duo it's a dual screen surface device with support for the surface pen and integration with Microsoft apps but the screens are
Smaller 5.6 inches each and that device runs Android because it's a phone Microsoft's keynote presenter panelist was kind of brushing it off like yeah yeah it's a phone it communicates it makes calls it does all that nicely but
Make no mistake this product is a surface then after bringing the duo device out on stage and presenting it to the press he also said this is industry pushing technology and its technology pushing possibilities now think about
That for a second instead of pushing innovation for the sake of innovation Microsoft wants to push technology for the sake of possibilities and with the serpent's duo Microsoft may have very well created its own category of
Smartphones the phone closes like a clamshell and it opens like book you can set it up to watch videos and you can use one of the displays as a gamepad or a keyboard now we've seen dual display phones before from the
Likes of LG with the dual screen accessory and we've even seen some phones come out with two displays a perfect example is the ZTE axon M now the question is why haven't these dual display phones really taken off they're
Chunky they're expensive they have a hard-line crease going between the two displays all of those things are true but it boils down to one thing the benefits don't outweigh the compromises so companies went ahead and
Spent billions of dollars to develop foldable phones and for what it looks cool it's the bleeding edge technology maybe you want a phone that's also a tablet and the Samsung Galaxy fold innovation for the sake of innovation
This makes me think about how we use our phones and what more were missing from our phones like for example the Samsung Galaxy Note when it first launched it was marketed as productivity and the s-pen and you can doodle and write notes
And drag and drop but the latest note 10 didn't have me doing that had me doing this thing I feel like this is gonna change the way we think about productivity on our phones especially if you're someone who uses Microsoft apps
All the time the device does run Android and that's a very important aspect of this phone because Windows Phone is done it's gone it we don't need it windows already has an excellent product on both the desktop and the two and one tablet
Form factor but Microsoft had been planning to make this phone reality for years we've seen the leaks we've seen the patents and we've seen even some renders but Microsoft finally realized that now was the perfect time to
Announce such a phone Android is already being optimized to use on foldable phones Android is learning how to predict what you're trying to do with these screens and the way that you're manipulating them
That makes sense but the phone is not gonna be available until holiday season 2020 and that's fine Microsoft has plenty of time for it to figure out how to get more app developers on board to develop
Applications for the surface duo unfortunately no other specifications or technical details have been made available about the surface duo but considering it's running Android we might anticipate that it's going to be
Running a Snapdragon processor we'll have to wait till next year to see I am really genuinely excited for the surface duo and I play with a lot of different phones throughout the year and I have not been this excited for a new phone or
Form factor in a while so that's it thank you guys for watching I hope you enjoyed this hot take from me and joining me on my opinions and my thoughts on this new surface phone and also I want to hear from you guys the
Viewers what you think of the surface duo do you agree with my points do you disagree if you disagree go off in the comments I want to have a conversation let's talk about it with that I'm Ricky signing off for GSM Reena and I'll see
You guys later you
