HomePod mini leaks suggest VERY simple Design

by birtanpublished on April 18, 2021

In June of 2017 Apple unveiled the home pod and you know what people didn't like it very much and here we are three years later not much has changed to be honest though yeah I get it some people like the home pod but we all know the repetitive request if they just made something cheaper that was a bit more reasonable for people it could probably sell a lot better well we have some more details on that home pod Mini that sounds like it might be called exactly that or the basic concept of making a smaller home pod may be way more basic than we've actually anticipated so let's begin

So recently 9 to 5 Mac discovered that within the more recent updates to home pod software they changed the fundamental framework of the home pod from iOS to TV OS so in case some of you didn't know the home pod technically ran a very very heavily modified version of iOS and you know it's modified because you know there's barely a display on that thing so yeah there's no home screen or anything like that but they changed it to TV OS because there are Apple TVs that are still rocking a8 chips which is what the home pod is rocking and iOS framework is built a

Little bit more on you know power saving options and it's used to being on devices that have batteries and stuff like that whereas TV OS is used to always having you know unlimited power supply from the wall so it doesn't really make a whole lot of sense to have a redesigned iOS on the home pod so moving it to TV OS makes sense scraps that gives us some indication that iOS 14 will not be coming to things like the iPad air 2 or the iPad Mini 4 both of which had the a8 chip but they did get iOS 13 mainly because they had two gigs of RAM so in case you were wondering why

The iPhone 6 had an a8 chip and it didn't get iOS 13 it just had Ram limitations so what does that have to do with the home pod mini it means that there's likely a chance that they plan on keeping at least the a8 chip around for a little bit longer as they build future versions of home pod updates they can still work with that framework and I know that a 8 chip is very very old but it's a home pod okay it has to basically run Siri in place of music it's very very simple so you don't need a heavily powered CPU or GPU to run anything like the home pod in fact most of you

Probably don't know what type of CPU the Google home Mini or Amazon echo dot have do you but anyway the report we're getting from Blumberg who has a decent track record about the smaller sized home pod is that it will retain the same design that we currently have with our already existing home pod so maybe we're overthinking it wind we try to design concepts it looked like the echo dot or look like the Google home mini I think that it's very possible Apple is making another smart speaker follow-up that is literally as bloomberg is reporting about half the

Size of the original home pod but keeping the same design so that really really basic concept we got all those years back if just they're making a version of the home pod that's half the size it literally could be that it might look just the same but smaller in my hope personally is that that comes with half the price so obviously retail price of the home pod is $300 right now but you know you can get it for certified refurbished or you can get it from Best Buy which has sales for them all the time I've seen them go below $200 when they're on sale so keep that in mind for

The home pod mini but I think if they made one that still sounded good but it was about half the size it would make a whole lot of sense to price it at around one hundred and fifty dollars which may still seem high for a smart speaker and I agree because there are plenty of little smart speakers out there that would still undercut that but I think Apple knows they're not going to win the knowledge game with digital assistance you know Siri clearly is not the smartest digital assistant we know that so they still have to prioritize sound performance a little bit and I also

Think there's plenty of people out there that would much rather have two home pod minis instead of just one regular home pod so that they compare them in a stereo mode and put them on either end of their desk or their TV stand or you know just giving people options out there and this rumor is suggesting that the home pod mini is coming later this year it's possible they would unveil it at WWDC but it's also possible they might want to wait till the end of this year to actually unveil it but I don't know why it takes so dang long it's a smart speaker you already make it one

Just make a smaller one in fact the same source bloomberg reported last year that they were working on a smaller cheaper version of the home pod that would include a two tweeter array instead of the seven that is on the current home pod so yeah definitely don't expect it to be as loud or as powering as the current home pods we have but you know what I've used my home pods a lot they sound great audio quality is excellent and everything but there's very rare times I take it like above 60 to 70% volume because that thing gets really really loud to the point that you'd only

Really play it that high when you're having like a dance party which I do have from time to time but still not that often so for the sake of it being a practical smart speaker and the fact that a lot of people want to have a digital assistant to kind of reach out and talk to but not in places where they need you know incredible bass in really really loud noise because it's not just something you put in your living room or in the kitchen it's also something some people want to put in the bathroom so they can listen to music while they shower or put it in their

Bedroom where they want to be occasionally listen to music in the background it's not gonna be super loud but hey it's something to listen to and it sounds better than your typical you know iPad speakers or iPhone speakers so that's why I think home pod mini has tremendous success even if you think 150 dollars is steep I mean consider the fact that air pods are tremendous success in their 160 dollars so for audio improvements in people's lives that seems to be a reasonable price point I'm sure there's a huge demographic of people that are willing

To pay that Apple tax to have a smart speaker that's quite a bit better than a Google home Mini or an echo dot but yes quite a bit more expensive and before you all freak out and start commenting this already yes I know I don't care about the home pod until they let you use Spotify on it by default or Siri gets way better I'm not anticipating that I still believe the home pod is meant to be a love letter to people in the Apple ecosystem if you're expecting it to use Spotify by default or let you change it to some digital assistant or let it support Bluetooth connectivity

Yeah I highly doubt it to be honest because apples had years and years now for them to enable those features on the home pod and they still haven't so if they're not doing it yet they're probably not going to do it later but Apple is betting a lot more heavily on services in more recent history so making the home pod mini you know intended to be like Apple music accessory kind of keeps people attached to Apple music so maybe they'll do some kind of program where it's like if you buy the home pod mini you get Apple music free for six months or you know

Longer than the average free trial because that will get people into recurring payments so it may be more focused on the services model of revenue and not so much making money off of the product itself but that's where I'll end my speculation and pass the question back onto you guys what do you think the home pod Mini is going to do what do you think it's going to be feel free to hit me up over on Twitter join my discord we can talk more about it there this is rap soup here and I'm so sorry I'm the xxx youtuber in your descriptions that forgot to upload a

Video on the 1+8 in case you didn't know it came out today and it has wireless charging and IP water-resistance okay have a good one bye
