HOLY SH!T MAJOR Android problem (TERRIFYING)

by birtanpublished on November 22, 2020

Hey remember last week on this show where we talked about how iPhone users were secretly being spied on by their cameras and Android users were all like ah sucks to be you well what daily tech news in a way that doesn't suck of course you do that subscribe button and turn on notifications so you don't miss the next episode yo buddy's going on welcome back to front page tech of course shoulder gives you all the latest tech news from one geek that's me to another that is you happy Thursday hope for doing great it is so cold in here right now I'm

Actually I have the window open in the studio right now as I'm recording this and I'm not wearing pants see no pants don't have them on okay news all right so first up for the day's story numero uno just to recap here's what happened last week last week it was discovered that for iOS only not android iOS only there was a bug I told he wasn't a bug it was definitely happening on purpose but Facebook said it was a bug where while you were scrolling your Facebook feed in the Facebook app I it also just got access to your camera like actively

Recording while you were scrolling through the feed and of course I gave the opportunity for all the Android users to just point and laugh at all the iPhone users but now this week can't do that so according to a report released by cybersecurity firm check marks aha clever name haha there was a huge major Android security flaw that was giving attackers broad permissions to access a phone's camera without the consent from users the flaw itself was named Brian Keith would sunscreen did you forever thank you he got the flaws name was is C ve – 2 0 1 9

– 2 2 3 4 did you write that down kids oh good you got it perfect it allowed and gave app developers crazy access to your device's camera turning that little thing into a spy device but I da da da da da da da da da da da da da now you might be asking how did checkmarks figure all this out well they actually created their own app they made a fake weather and found all of these vulnerabilities through that app normally when your camera is working on your phone you can hear like the the fake little camera shutter that it makes well the attackers

Are whoever was using this flaw to spy on you they could silence that camera shutter to hide the fact that it was actually recording you through video or photos without your consent you had no idea and it's not like this can only happen if you have those malicious apps open this could happen if the app was closed to like even if the screen was turned off as long as this app was running in the background any of these apps said exploited this flaw if they're running in the background they could record you plain and simple that same flaw also gave access to the media

Stored on your phone as well as GPS data for like where your photos and videos were taken even worse again this is that same flaw also allowed those apps or the developers to listen in on both sides of the phone call a conversation record that audio oh but wait it gets worse it could also use the proximity sensor within your device to allow the attacker to know when you were holding your phone up to your ear obviously if your phone's up to your ear you're probably on a phone call or it could also be used for when your phone was laying face down to then open up the camera app and you

Wouldn't know when it was taking photos of video and sense through this flaw the apps were also given permission to access the devices storage they could also take the images and upload them the images and video from your phone and upload it to a server apparently checkmarks first discovered this whole thing during the summer they were apparently researching the Google camera app on the pixel 2xl pixel 3 and started to find this and then further investigated those vulnerabilities and yeah I found all this pretty bad now of course they contacted Google first they

Reached out and contacted Google first in July and then in August Samsung actually came forward and confirmed that they were also affected by these same vulnerabilities so it wasn't just like you know specifically the pixel devices in a statement Google said we appreciate checkmarks bringing this to our attention and working with Google and Android partners to coordinate disclosure the issue was addressed on impacted google devices via Play Store updates and the Google camera application in july 2019 a patch has also been made available to

All partners and this is why you should always keep your friend up to date obviously Google has I guess we can assume they've done their part here so if you have any updates available like Samsung came forward and made this obviously was also probably the official devices but as far as like other manufacturers that you may be using the Android devices through they haven't come forward comfortably with anything maybe haven't hit anything they have not come forward with anything so it's just best right now to update your shirt hopefully that mitigates this issue for

You the scary part though is like this stuff could happen and you wouldn't even know till months later and even then because it's Android and fragmented you may not have the latest updates to fix this stuff so like yes that's terrifying okay so speaking of updates next up let's talk about Apple I just I'm gonna try to keep my calm here you may have seen this maybe not Apple has pretty much been releasing updates almost every week for iOS as of yesterday brand-new beta for iOS 13.3 an

IPad OS 13.3 those betas they are out obviously Apple is always and continuously trying to smooth out bugs and fix it within the OS and it's just um it's a mess like I'm serious iOS is a frustrating mess and with every new update there's always always always new issues like there has been one issue I want to keep just keep in mind here this is a nearly trillion dollar company okay nearly trillion dollar company there are just simple bugs that just stick around that just never get frakking fixed stuff that should just work there's no reason for it not to work but because it's

Apple because it's iOS now no matter how many updates just doesn't work like I live with a bug right now I've lived with this for months now just months where like I'll take a screenshot right I'll crop it maybe I'll like draw on the screenshot or something whatever and then I go to send the screenshot and I send it and I look and it just none of my changes were made it wasn't cropped no the drawings I made none of my circles I put there nothing it just sent the whole frakking screenshot and I don't find out until after I sent it it just doesn't save anything like no one

Should just have to accept at a feature like this just as or it for your phone and I've had people reach out to me since I mentioned this the first time and say hey this update fixed the bug and I get excited I install the update and never it literally always just exists I just live like this now this is my life I don't understand how such a major company can't fix crap like this like it's there's no excuse for this like I can put up with bugs right I get it like it just happens that's how things work and you get an update and fixes in you don't complain whatever but

When you keep and stuff the updates and none of the stuff that you have a problem with every single day is getting fixed it is maddening Oh but John just get Android then if you don't like God shut up shut up I had an troy'd four years I just got an iPhone like I just went back to iPhone maybe like a year and a half ago maybe actually probably not even that I was frustrated with Android stuff that's why I left Andrew because I was too frustrated with androids problems so don't tell me just cuz I promised with

The iPhone and iOS that all my problems we fixed if I just go back to more problems with Android that's not how Bracken works let me complain just let me complain about what I have okay all right God we live in the future little pox talking space satellites and bring it we're fully connected to the Internet have access to any information we want I can still complain okay like why doesn't it crop the thing why does the magical device crop the screenshot that I just then that did sent did what rank and last up something maybe you don't know about me I schedule a lot of

My tweets like a lot of the time when you see a tweet from me on my Twitter by the way follow me on Twitter go do that a lot of the times when you see tweet for me it was scheduled at some point I like the app buffer it's not a sponsor or anything like that I just use buffer to manage a lot of my social media to schedule my tweets that sort of thing well now it seems that Twitter wants to do away with apps like that as of yesterday Twitter actually started to test the scheduling of tweets within their web clients like for real natively there's an experiment right now in

Twitter's web app where some of you can go ahead and schedule tweets we have no idea how many people are included in this test or how Twitter picked the people to include in this test but if you have it you have it if you don't you don't safe to assume though that if this is successful and it works out or to roll out to everybody and that sucks that really sucks for those third-party apps I mean gotta be honest I would do it if I was Twitter I mean if you have these third-party apps accessing your API giving users features that you don't

Have natively just take the pictures take the features what I would do and that is the show hopefully you like to you learn something if you did hit that like a button I've hate my stupid face that's fine that dislike works too if new here subscribe and I will see you guys to make me
