GoPro Hero 8 Black VS GoPro Hero 7 Black! Is it Time to Upgrade?

by birtanpublished on March 7, 2021

It's always the saddest when we've got to take sides in a family squabble and no matter what it seems like once a year the old GoPro family I mean the youngest always wants to go out of its way to prove itself to be the best with the best features and to be the best value for money I mean this conflict is good for all of us and now it's time to compare the old school versus the new school the hero 7 black versus the hero 8 black is it worth spending the money to get the newest and the most cutting-edge let's find out what's up everyone I'm the everyday dad and if I can figure it out

You can figure it out when the GoPro Hero 7 black came out I was blown away this was and probably still is the most shocking camera I've ever gotten ahold of in my entire life I mean sure previous to this I like to GoPros as cameras generally but the 5 didn't really Wow me and I had a lot of technical problems with the 6 but the 7 easily blew I mean it just blew everything else I'd ever used I mean it just put it all the shame put it all to shame I mean it had mind-boggling electronic image stabilization awesome audio and a fantastic looking image I

Was so true story I was so surprised at how good this was that while I was at CES 2019 I had the opportunity GoPro invited me to a press event and when I was asked what I thought like I had no idea I was like where are you guys gonna go for here now the CEO did say that they'd have to find a way to keep surprising me and well congratulations GoPro you did you absolutely surprised me but I'm not sure that it's actually the way that I would have prefered that's enough preamble let's get into the comparisons we all know by now that

There are five things that I judge all action cameras against mean it's carved in the strictest of strict stones strict stones are serious business and those stones build the foundation of this YouTube channel and we call those my temporary neighbors are really starting to hate this part first up decent not perfect image quality if you're new to the channel welcome thank you click that subscribe button smash the like button I don't judge the technical image quality out of action cameras too harshly mean there's only so much that you can get out of cameras that are built basically

In the worst possible way to maximize image quality I mean where does the heat go and when it comes to technical image quality these cameras are pretty darn similar but there are some big differences both can record up to 4k 60 frames per second 2.7 can up to 120 frames per second and 1080p and up to 240 frames per second but yes the resolution sounds similar but don't let the similarity of the resolutions and framerates fool you into thinking that the image looks the same if you only record in 1080p well then disregard all that don't

Ignore all that because yes they basically have the exact same capabilities but at the high end 2.7 K and 4k on the GoPro Hero 8 black you had the option of choosing a beefier 100 megabits per second codec as opposed to the standard GoPro 7 and below 70 ish megabits per second you can choose on the hero a black basically what this gives you is a little more information in each frame to hopefully to keep artifacts out of fast-moving option but also give you a little more leeway if you want to grade in post afterwards not I do mean a little bit so I think

There's some showmanship going on here when the choice from low to high I wouldn't actually say is the correct label this doesn't unlock the high bit rate does not unlock an all i compression or even ten bit personally I think this should be called low and standard because in the camera world 4k 100 megabits per second is the standard ish I mean it's still kind of on the low end of the standard and does it really help so let's see here are two of the exact same clips of me wandering about in the woods from each of the hero 7 and the hero 8 both were recorded in the

Flat color with the native white bounce I mean everything in this is the exact same except the hero 8 is in the high bitrate I put just a quick like auto grade on it from DaVinci Resolve so can you tell the difference I mean honestly that's not really fair as the YouTube compression malls all sorts of videos but if you upload your content here that's the point is it worth the extra money for that little bit extra of bit you're gonna have to decide that on your own another small but important difference and a feature that I've been

Clamoring for since the hero 5 black you can now do linear mode the mode that crops in a little bit to remove the deficient or ssin in 4k on the hero 8 black the 7 can only do that up to 2.7 K which that's not an earth-shattering difference but it is nice that GoPro is listening to its audience and will add features requested on iterative cameras we've been asking for it they did do that I've got to give them credit for their plus a big thing when it comes to image quality is the quality of the stabilization but as that's a whole pillar we'll talk about that later I

Just want to mention that both are absolutely great bringing it listen let's step back out of the camera nerd dungeon I do think the image quality on both cameras is excellent both the sharp both have great colors and heck if you really want to have it both have a flat image profile that you can grade if you really really want to I I never do I normally don't want to I don't like grading that's why I did the auto grade next up in the pillar is my personal darling this is this is where I make my money and what I prefer ease of use much like when we talked about the Osmo

Action versus the GoPro Hero a black both of these are pretty darn similar I mean well this is even more similar than the DJI offering two GoPros look it says it right there GoPro GoPro two GoPros physically and by physically I mean the physical inputs of the camera both of the exact same they both have power on buttons and they both have record buttons that's it physically that's all you're gonna get but they also both have a relatively large bright touchscreen on the back with a pretty similar user interface and you might think that GoPros as GoPros

Would basically be copy and pasted settings of each other that's what I would do if I was making a camera but in actuality each year GoPro sometimes drastically changes the user interface they change it like every year when I originally turned on the hero a black I fell on the side of Y fixed what isn't broken and I didn't really like how they laid the new system out you can see in the unboxing video where I'm like cool however I've got to say that I really like the new changes and I would say that the hero 8 black is much easier

To use especially like while in action while using like wall out doing stuff then the hero 7 and I'd go so far as to say that it's drastically easier to use now you probably only have a few settings that you routinely rely on mine are I do a 4k 30 wide 2.7 K linear and 1080p at 240 frames per second wide those are my go-to s when I make a running video or I use one of these cameras for running or any of the action that's hiking stuff like that those are the three that I use and since I know that I can preload those into the camera and while running around about I can

Easily switch between the three boom done boom done boom done it's really easy on the hero 7 I would have to change each setting I would have to change the resolution I would have to change the frame rate and that doesn't sound like a lot but each of those little changes introduces a chance to screw something up and as somebody that screw stuff up a lot it's just that makes it a frustrating experience to use so since we've got the image quality and ease of use topics out of the way and I know people are trying to use these as vlogging cameras let's hop outside and

Put these to the test for vlogging as these are turning into monster outdoor performers see out there cool ok and welcome to the vlogging test of the GoPro Hero 8 black versus the GoPro Hero 7 black and we are once again out here hiking I've kind of like rekindled my love of going outside and hiking doing these tests so both cameras are set up the exact same way they're both recording in 4k 30 frames per second they both have their hyper smooth on now I have hyper smooth 2.0 in high setting on the hero 8 black and just the regular hyper smooth on the 7

Black I don't have the boost turned on because I don't think the boost is working that well unless you're in like blazing blazing sunlight which as you can see it's overcast today so we're not in blazing blazing sunlight but yeah this is the image quality coming out of both they're both set to 4k 30 wide because the hero 7 does not have linear in 4k yeah this is the image quality look climbing down some rocks that's not actual climbing yeah this is the image quality this is the vlogging capabilities I do think both cameras look pretty good I've been the more I

Use the hero 8 the more and more impressed I am with its image capabilities its audios really great because it's got that gigantic microphone in the front it's just fun it's just fun to use I've been using this camera a whole bunch I do think the hero 7 might be the better action camera because of its replaceable trees trees going around the trees because of its replaceable lens cover um but yeah this is the image quality this is the vlogging capabilities of both cameras let me know which one you guys like best in the links below we've got where we go

In here hold on where we going this one I want the Jammu Co Jammu Koh trail and you know what after this video and after you've watched several maybe you should go out and go for a hike get outside have some fun today all right you guys go back to the studio and we're back now we've been so far we've been pretty sunshine and rainbows about the hero 8 black you might think as this far that it's just the best ever now we're gonna start hitting some road blocks and this next pillar is the worst for the hero a black and it might be the deal breaking pillar when it comes to here a black and

That's durability so why does durability why is that one of the pillars and why is it probably the most important pillar I mean heck who cares about how durable a camera is well I think durability is the single most important aspect for action cameras if it's not durable then I might as well use my cell phone I mean seriously why else buy an action camera if you're not gonna use it in an action setting without durability an action camera isn't an action camera and yes both cameras are waterproof to similar ratings and they both have very similar body construction they look like

GoPros but the GoPro Hero 7 black has a removable lens cover so if you scratch this no big deal just go out and buy another one not a big deal in any way shape or form plus it comes with a case so if the feet break just gone buy another case go to Walmart go to Best Buy buy another case these are simple maintenance kind of things that absolutely might have and have happened and it's not a big deal because you can easily fix him you can go out to a big-box store get the pieces you need to fix it and it's not any things break things scratch

Who cares it's not a big deal like I get flat tires on stuff all the time I fix it because I can go get those parts the hero eight black however is missing the removable lens cover GoPro in all fairness GoPro does say this is the strongest glass ever but nothing especially nothing that goes out on the trail or sky or underwater is 100% durable ever if this scratches well that's it you've personally you've permanently degraded your image quality yes you can buy a screen protector like on your phone but that places the risk and what I mean

Risk I mean like risk involves money right and that places the cost of that risk onto you and it adds to the expense of an already expensive system another point of failure which I actually love from a convenience perspective but I'm not as sold on from a durability one are the little feet here I mean look at this these are built into the camera that's awesome it makes it really easy to use without needing that case but if one of these breaks you have to replace it which again is much harder to do than to just swap out a case again I can't go to Walmart I can't go to Best Buy to buy

These feet if this breaks I have to order from GoPro it's gonna take longer and if I'm in the field you're just out of luck I like what they're doing they are trying to move it forward but I think they're moving it forward in the wrong way for an action camera and not to keep kicking the egg while it's down but let's quickly keep doing that again not as severe though in the fourth pillar compatibility with GoPro style mounts and accessories and yes again they're both shaped like GoPros look at what and then I dropped him they're both shaped like GoPros but they are slightly

Different now as time goes on this will be less and less of a concern but right now as of today all accessories gimbals everything action is built for cameras shaped like the hero 7 black this design has been the same since the 5 so for almost three years now that's a supply chain and a design chain that's locked in the hero 8 is changed just enough by being thinner and taller to not really work with said gimble's or accessories fairness where fairness is due this will Changez third-parties ketchup but it's gonna be something to keep in mind if you want to be an early adopter like the

Everyday dad you could be like me I guess plus the hero 7 has an HDMI port built into the camera if you want to use this like as a webcam or you want to record externally for some reason I don't know why you'd want to do that but you can do that there's an hdmi port on this the hero 8 black doesn't have an HDMI connection unless you buy the additional media mod 4 wait how much $80 well thankfully that gives you the audio input too but dang ok okay time to talk about the last but pretty darn useful pillar stabilization both of these GoPros use hyper smooth technology the

Seven uses 1.0 and the eight uses 2.0 what that actually means though there I don't think there's that much of a difference I'm sorry the hero 8 does have access to more stabilization options like a normal high end of boost mode but I find the boost mode to have a weird warp to it and I think that's because you need so much direct sunlight to have the proper shutter speed to make the calculations and I'm not an engineer this is a guess because it's been overcast here almost every day since I got the Hero 8 and the boost has had that warp the almost the entire time the

Hyper smooth 2.0 and other modes works perfectly fine with the high setting being my personal favorite however hyper smooth 1.0 still works amazingly well in very low light you'll get the same warp as the hero eights boost but even in myth lighting it will still give you almost gimble like performance honestly since the hero 7 came out I think action camera gimble's are dead you may have noticed we don't talk about them anymore here because as a device while they might be slightly better it's not worth the extra cost complexity or weight to carry around as opposed to this new

Generation of action camera which basically does it all by itself almost 2,000 words later is it worth spending the extra money to get the top of the line or if you have a is it worth upgrading to the aid this is tough this is tough because for all my complaints I actually I really really like the hero a black it's got some of the best image quality I've ever seen on an action camera and I like the new interface and I do even though I complained about it for durability I like this mount like this is so much easier and more convenient to use but

It's not just a regular camera it's an action camera and as far as action goes I would easily take the hero 7 over the hero 8 they're not discontinuing the 7 so this is the better option because the removable lens cover is almost required in a camera that is going to be used at anything faster than a gentle walk you're running you're biking you're skiing you're doing all that action stuff any piece of debris could scratch this for vlogging though there probably isn't that much of a difference image quality wise to upgrade if you've already got the 7

However there is a specific niche that I think the hero 8 is perfect for and that's runners the stabilization is good enough to not need a gimbal the preload settings are super easy to change while running it works in the rain it's small enough to carry around that when you're like you don't want to carry it because it's heavy this might actually be the perfect running camera but for all other purposes for almost everything else I'd still recommend the Hero 7 over the hero aid the older sometimes the old person the family is still better now if you like this video you will definitely like

The one where I talk about the hero 7 black one year after its release and why I go a little more in-depth on why this is still a fantastic option click here thanks for watching
