GoPro Hero 8 Black VS DJI Osmo Action! What’s the BEST Action Camera?!

by birtanpublished on March 12, 2021

The DJI Osmo action versus the GoPro Hero 8 black 2 flagship cameras that are on the top end of the action world now both of these cameras can record up to 4k 60 frames per second they both have fantastic electronic image stabilization and heck both are even waterproof down to over 30 feet when you put it like that it really begs the question is the newer version of the original action camera worth forking out almost $100 more let's find out I have their action cameras they can take it what's up everyone I'm the read a dead if I can figure it out you can figure it out action cameras right I love them you

Love them I definitely I don't know about you but I definitely cannot get enough and any day that a new one comes out it's like it's like Christmas you know because I'm an adult and I can buy whatever I you know I'm gonna talk I can buy whatever I want action cameras action cameras are like Christmas so either way GoPro very recently like last week came out with the hero 8 black which promises to kick it up a notch over my previous top pick their hero 7 black now I've been using this basically non-stop for the past three days and the most requested comparison that you all

Have asked for was to compare this against this I guess they're actually cameras you could kind of smash them together except for problems we'll talk about later first up if you've seen my more traditional camera videos I like to break those comparisons down into three parts well those three parts were born from my action camera videos and I put more on the action cameras because I don't know I just liked them better and they've got the word action in them action means more comparison categories and they've got five aspects of comparison that they get compared to and

We call those here it comes the pillars first up decent video quality now I'm not one to judge image quality too harshly when it comes to action cameras there is after all only so much quality that you can fit into such a tiny camera with a tiny sensor and you've got to get all of that pack into a waterproof body that doesn't dissipate heat you've got to have some expectation management there because it's like the worst all situation to build an overall camera package so I let them get by with lower image quality however both of these cameras do actually have pretty good

Images when you think about like what all has to go and to make them fit into these bodies they both can recording up to 4k 60 frames per second antenna Depina up to 240 frames per second they both have HDR modes and though we'll talk more about this in its own section later they both have pretty darn good electronic image stabilization one thing that can cause a big difference in overall image quality is the maximum bitrate that video can be recorded in or in a more basic sense how much information can you pack into each frame the Osmo action has a maximum bitrate of

100 megabits a second when recording and it's top-end which now matches up with the GoPro Hero 8 black GoPro before now would top out at around 70 megabits a second but the hero 8 has an option for a higher and file giving you that hundred megabits option another benefit of this new generation of action cameras is to have several selectable fields of view it used to be that you just got a big fish ID lens that went out of style the same time insynctive but now now you don't have to worry about all that warping you can pick between several and I'm gonna give the

Field of view win to the GoPro it has the ability to go from crazy wide-angle super view all the way down to a more natural-looking linear mode now this gives a very nice versatility in function you could use the super view mode while mountain bike or motorcycle riding or paragliding or whatever other kind of action that you get into and then when you're done you can pop it into linear if you want to do some vlogging the Osmo action doesn't really have selectable fields of view but in essence you can't kind of do the same thing by turning the d warping option on

And off that'll go from a wide angle to a less wide angle linear type of mode it's not specifically labeled as field of view but it gives you roughly the same thing when it comes to overall image quality like the actual image you're getting they're both pretty darn close now I do find the GoPro footage to be slightly more detailed and maybe a little sharper then the Osmo action video but it's close enough that I don't think there's much of a difference especially after spent uploaded to an online platform I don't even know what – this goes on youtube if you're really

Going to be able to see that different when it comes to the colors I also find myself liking the GoPro colors over the DJI colors but it has to be in good light in good light or in bright sunlight the GoPro looks better however it's been overcast a lot over the last few days out here mean it's raining right now and during that time the GoPro looks kind of waxy for skin where the ozma looks a little less bad I mean not neither looks great in compromise light but the Osmo eases it out just a little bit the next pillar we're gonna check out is actually something that matters

Way more to me than image quality and that's ease of use ease of use both the Osmo action and the GoPro have pretty large usable touch screens on the back both also have pretty similar physical button layouts you've got a physical record button on top you've got a power button that's that's pretty much it I mean neither really has a physical button advantage over the other when it comes to software and user interface though that's where we're really going to see some design changes that start to come into contrast GoPro redesigned their user interface for the new eight

Series and it's different than past options I'm not yet on the it's better than or worse than previous option strain but it does work in an attempted streamlined way when you want to change resolutions and frame rates you get a quick menu type of system where you can have pre-selected and designed like kits that you can quickly switch between which is great and it's an easy way to switch between preferred settings but if you want to make a quick change like you maybe want to change your white balance you maybe want to change your field of view it's a little more fiddly to make

That because you've got to tap a very small little button next to that kit now the problem that I found while I'm out running it's kind of difficult to use like really frustrating to use because you're running like you're bouncing it's hard to tap then when you got to tap that little thing it's a little more fiddly I appreciate what they're trying to do but I don't know that I like it yet DJI though has really created my favorite user interface in all of action camera dumb it doesn't have the quick selects but it has more of a swipe

Notation selector than a tap selector and while this might feel a little bit slower it's far more deliberate and maybe it is a tad slower but it feels better because there's a smaller chance of error when using this system I just find it so much better to use plus I find it the rear screen even though it's like physically smaller it has like the screen itself is bigger and nicer to use than the GoPro no but I mean that's all subjective user interfaces come and go and they're up to everybody's own like individual like what do you like what do you not like

Some would like the GoPro someone like DJI the big and I mean the huge difference in usability between the action and the hero comes down to these front screens the front screen on the Osmo action is not just it doesn't just show you recording modes this can be set to be a usable front screen that will let you frame and see your exposure from in front of the camera check this out it takes like a second boom it switches it's now a front-facing screen it's not perfect by any stretch of the imagination but it's built-in and it's incredibly simple and easy to use this

Screen makes this so so much better if you want to use this as a vlogging camera it's infinitely easier to get the image you want if you actually know what the camera is doing and what will talk more about this in a second because GoPro is planning on offering accessories to do this but it's built in for no additional charge in the Osmo action again ease of use is just so much more important to me instance we got both cameras in hand we've covered image Claudie we've covered ease of use let's put all of that to the test quickly with a vlogging test because people are

Starting to use these as their overall primary vlogging camera okay now it's time for the vlogging test of the DJI Osmo action and the brand new GoPro Hero 8 black now like I mentioned in the beginning both of these can record up to 4k 60 frames per second both of these have electronic image stabilization that you can see right now and both actually on one of the big things that I really like about the GoPro and I'm we've already mentioned during the image quality but it has a linear mode for 4k 30 which is new for GoPro which it's something that I really never thought

We'd see and I'm really glad because one of the problems with GoPro is if you get that why do you eat that fisheye distortion and it just looks gross and while yes that's one of the problems with action cameras that it's not something that you necess early one from a vlogging camera the Osmo action does not have a wide or a super view mode but it has that D warp mode which we're using right now which gives everything it's nice straight lines and as you can see we decided to go hiking today to do the vlogging test because world's better can you figure

Out how to vlog then when you're by yourself in the woods and yeah right but I do think both of these could work perfectly fine as a vlogging camera one of the big benefits that you're gonna find in the Osmo action that you probably already saw is it's got that front-facing screen that just comes with it like there's no two ways about it it has a front-facing screen that you can use if you want to frame yourself up if you wanna make sure your exposure is correct let me know which one you guys like better I do think the audio is pretty comparable on both the GoPro now

Has a gigantic microphone in the front okay I'm gonna keep going on my hike you guys catch me back in the studio and we're back thank the rain stopped for just a little bit thank goodness the next pillar is compatibility with GoPro style mounts and accessories this one's pretty weird this is a weird one because normally when it comes to go pro style Mouse and accessories the GoPro is the one that wins that GoPro mounts GoPro camera however the GoPro Hero 8 black is a new body design it's thinner and taller than the older models and while it might end up working with the GoPro

Specific accessories designed for it you might end up having some problems fitting it into older gimbals or cases and accessories designed for this style of body this 5 6 and 7 style body yes eventually all of those will be updated but being an early adopter you're probably gonna have problems and that what makes this weird as the Osmo action is much closer in shape to the older designs and will continue to work with the older versions of accessories I I don't get it when it comes to first party accessories the GoPro Hero 8 will have some pretty neat additions like an

Accessory screen that we talked about earlier it'll have a light and a production mod that's great I do look that is great and it should give you some more functionality out of this camera dot dot dot because the screen again is already built into the Osmo action you don't have to get nickel and dimed well I guess after looking at prices it's more like $50 and $70 into making the camera match that functionality I mean yes having a light school but seriously fourthly and most decisively as far as action cameras go anyway is

Durability huh again something that GoPro just normally sweeps the floor with the one thing the one thing that GoPro in previous years used to have over everything else was durability like I said in the intro both these cameras are waterproof down to over 30 feet and they both have pretty robust bodies but it's a big one it is a big one GoPro in their infinite wisdom designed to make their lens covering integrated into the body itself that I know that doesn't sound like a lot and reading this later I know what doesn't I know it sounds like a crazy thing to complain about but

Of all the decisions on the hero 8 this is the worst one and this is the one that I straight-up don't get the hero 7 has a removable cover in case this breaks or scratches you can just pop it off pop another one back on like done you can buy a screen protector for this glass but that I don't like having to preemptively buy that because that puts the cost of the risk back on us and not on GoPro like if I break this I can go buy another one it's at the store waiting for me but I have to then go out and buy a $20 screen to protect this instead of waiting to see it to happen

And that might sound like a small thing but that's GoPro putting that risk on us plus if the impact is enough to shatter the screen protector it'll probably just break this lens anyway and then you're just straight up out of luck now the cynical side of my brain this side I don't know the left side feels like this might be a way to push you into their subscription insurance model and that just kind of feels slimy to me it just feels slimy like why would you they'll think that I've been praising GoPro on for almost two years now is this removable lens coverage

Something that they had that nobody else had and now they don't have it I'm sorry I wish they did because the Osmo action certainly does it has removable lens cover which is really this one is really tough to get off the first time like the first time you the first time you take this thing off it's a pain in the butt but after that it just works and again much like the hero 7 this is a neat way to get ND filters on and off it just having a removable lens cover is so important when it comes to action cameras because action cameras they're not just a regular camera

They're not your cell phone you buy one of these because you need a level of durability and one of these is less durable than the other because its lens the part of the camera that is most important is compromised in my opinion and last but certainly not least because this is becoming a defining factor of action cameras stabilization both these cameras like I can't tell you any fibs both of these have insane electronic image stabilization that I think is pretty evenly matched in certain ways now neither of these cameras work great in low light you need a decently fast

Shutter speed for the algorithmic calculations but in good weather and location these are pretty darn magical cameras like I cannot believe what you'll get the hero 8 will give you several layers that are kind of confusing when you think about it but we're gonna walk through them real quick because you've got hyper smooth 2.0 you've got that in standard high and boost and each one of those corresponds to a little bit of a crop in the overall field of view with boost being the most severe but the potentially most stable however I actually found when you've got

It in boost mode if you use the camera in a pretty unstable environment like running you get this weird like this weird wobble yes the overall footage itself is more stable but I think the overall footage it's pretty rough to look at I uploaded this to Twitter as like an experiment and then I couldn't see the wobble too much afterwards so I don't know if you'll be able to see this through the YouTube compression but when you're looking like my monitor or you lookyou record it then you look on like your own devices it's pretty striking I think the hyper smooth 2.0 in the high

Setting is the best overall setting to use now the footage may sway a little bit from like the natural movement of the camera but the big shakes and the jerkiness is pretty much taken out for the most part and but you also don't get that weird wobble so hyper smooth 2.0 in the high setting that's what I recommend the Osmo action works pretty similarly with its Rocksteady and it also just works fantastically well I find that if you're using this in like a mountain bike you're using this and like a chest harness it'll get that same wobble so if

You're gonna use these just be aware of that so at the end of the day and 2,000 words later so what right which of these action cameras should you get it feels like an eternity ago in internet time when I compared the Osmo action to the hero 7 my answer was Osmo action for vlogging GoPro Hero 7 for action but that's not really the case this time I just do not like the compromises the design choices and the durability risks of the hero right black shirt the image quality is great but GoPro isn't the only option in town anymore I just don't know how you could make such an awesome

Hero 7 to make the poor decisions here so I absolutely recommend the Osmo action over the hero 8 it's 90 dollars cheaper plus you don't have to buy a bunch of extra junk to get the same level of functionality that breaks my heart I love go I won't go pro to succeed as a company if you remember back in the hero 5 hero 6 time I always recommended them because they had durability and it hurts that we're kind of taking a step back here if you don't innovate somebody else will if you like this video I bet you'd like the one where I compared the hero 7

Black to the Osmo action and you can find that by clicking here it might be more relevant than you think thanks for watching
