Google Pixel 5 vs. Samsung Galaxy S20 FE Comparison! Which Is Better?

by birtanpublished on November 2, 2020

What's going on guys my name is wade with tech daily and in this video we're going to be comparing the new google pixel 5 to the samsung galaxy s20 fe now i think this is a really interesting comparison because while both of these phones come in at the same price point 699 google's pixel 5 is technically their flagship device this year while samsung's s20 fe is their i guess mid-range offering the sort of lowest end s-series phone so these devices definitely compete with

One another and if you're in the market for a new phone i'm sure you're considering one of them if not both so in this video i'm gonna go over some of the things that are the same all the things that are different and hopefully by the end this will help you decide if either device is right for you like i mentioned both of these phones come in at that 699 dollar price point and with the pixel 5 you have two color options to choose from

Just black or this sorta sage color which i actually really like and this year the pixel 5 has just the one size and the one configuration option with eight gigs of ram and 120 gigabytes of storage the s20 fe is actually available in like half a dozen colors this is their cloud mint and depending on where in the world you're located you might be able to get this device with either six or eight gigs of ram and either 128 or 256 gigabytes of storage i'll go a bit more in depth with the

Specs and performance in just a minute but if you're interested in doing some comparison shopping of your own i'll leave some links down below in the video description to where you can get these phones at their cheapest current prices so be sure to check down there so you don't miss out on any good deals physically it's pretty obvious that these two devices are very different and really i think they are going to appeal to different groups of people the new pixel 5 is a 6-inch device which is actually relatively small by

2020 standards the s20fe on the other hand comes in at six and a half inches making it one of the larger devices currently available overall with this difference i think the pixel 5 is going to appeal to folks who want a smaller more comfortable phone for one-handed use and that fits comfortably in a pocket or bag the s20 fe of course is definitely for people who want as big of a screen as possible for the money and while you have a ton of real

Estate to work with obviously it may not be as comfortable or convenient both phones do have a very modern design with minimal bezels all around and a hole punch camera cut out towards the top the bottom border is a little larger on the s20 fe i think and the selfie cameras are placed differently on both devices with the pixel 5 having maybe a larger front camera in comparison but both those slight differences i don't think are too important what is worth noting

Though is that across the front the pixel 5's display is covered in the newer stronger gorilla glass 6 while the s20 fe has gorilla glass 3 covering it so in theory the pixel 5 should be stronger and more durable in the event of a drop around back it may not be obvious at first but these two phones are made from different materials the pixel 5 rocks an all metal body and frame consisting of recycled aluminum and covered in a thin but noticeable textured coating

While the s20fe has a smooth matte plastic rear cover and polished metal frame i think what stands out most here is just the fact that the pixel 5 doesn't necessarily feel like it's made from metal due to that coating while the s20fe may look more premium with its polished sides and edges in the end it's just going to be a matter of personal preference most importantly no matter what phone you choose the material and build is basically irrelevant since both these devices offer the same set of

Additional features they each have wireless charging as well as a reverse wireless charging power share feature and they are both ip68 water and dust resistant taking a look around and everything else on the left side of the pixel 5 towards the bottom you'll find its sim card tray unfortunately you do not have expandable storage with this phone but up top on the s20 fe you do get the sim and sd card slot for expandable storage on the right there's the power button and volume buttons for both phones

And down below you'll find the usbc port for charging microphone and one of two speakers both phones offer a dual speaker setup with the additional one in the earpiece but you might be able to see that while the earpiece is an obvious sort of slit on the s20fe the earpiece and speaker on the pixel 5 are completely under the front glass because of this to me i think the stereo speaker setup on the s20fe does sound better and here's a comparison so you can get an idea

around back of course you'll see the camera setups on both phones and below that on the pixel 5 is where you'll find the fingerprint reader which has made its return to this device it's certainly easy to feel for and plenty fast of course with the s20 fe it has its fingerprint sensor under the front display and interestingly enough i actually found the unlocking speeds with the two different methods to be pretty comparable

I was mostly surprised by just how quick the fes in display reader was in comparison though from time to time it may not be as accurate or as easy to find versus the obvious physical sensor around back on the pixel and by the way the s20 fe does have face unlock too which i personally like a little better than the fingerprint sensor and this is something the pixel 5 actually does not offer up front while the displays of course are vastly different sizes like i

Mentioned there is one other difference i do want to point out first off both of these phones are 1080p screens the pixel 5 comes in at a resolution of 2340×1080 at about 442 pixels per inch while the s20 fe is a 2400 by 1080 screen at around 407 pixels per inch and the pixel 5 is also an oled panel while the fe is samsung's super amoled display now to me i think both displays do look great they offer excellent viewing experiences no matter

Which phone you go with and while the pixel 5 tends to appear a bit sharper due to its higher pixel density i think i like the default color profile of the s20fe just a bit more it looks a little richer and more colorful and i think it's able to present blacks and dark colors a little better as well maybe i'm being a little nitpicky with that though and like i said both displays do look great the other difference though actually

Has to do with their refresh rates the pixel 5 offers a high refresh rate 90 hertz setting while the s20 fe is actually a slightly better 120hz capable panel both phones do feel very snappy and very smooth they're extremely responsive with that high refresh rate enabled and i think having this option in general on either device at this price point is just a great addition but i have found the difference between 90 hertz and 120 hertz on these phones noticeable when it comes to tapping

Touching and scrolling your way through the devices and up close you might be able to tell that the s20 fe does look to be a little more fluid and responsive with every touch is that a huge deal no not really either way you go i think it's going to be a better experience than a 60 hertz device anyway but i did want to at least showcase that difference and also point out that the 120 hertz you do get with the s20 fe is a flagship feature while the 90 hertz

Refresh rate on the pixel 5 is maybe a half step down in comparison when it comes to the internal specs i think this is where you'll find the biggest difference at least on paper the pixel 5 is powered by the snapdragon 765 g chipset and 8 gigs of ram like i mentioned paired with ufs 2.1 storage while the s20 fe packs the snapdragon 865 processor six or eight gigs of ram and ufs 3.1 storage with the phones i have here my s20 fe

Is the one with six gigabytes of ram so less than the pixel 5 in comparison but of course the processors are still different with the s20 fe seemingly having the edge and in practice i think you might be able to tell that there are instances where the s20 fe is faster in launching and loading certain apps but there's a few things to note here first off obviously we're dealing with different software experiences the pixel ships with android 11 and google's own pixel related tweaks and add-ons while the s20 fe

Still runs android 10 with samsung's own one ui 2.5 update and i think you'll just have to decide which sort of software experience you like more for me i've always been a fan of how well optimized the pixels are but samsung has done an amazing job this year with their latest one ui offerings in addition to that consideration i think you'll sort of have to decide if the difference in processors is really that important to you too you can sort of see that while the s20 fe is

Often faster in loading up certain apps the difference seems to be just a matter of a second or two if that the pixel 5 is just not that much slower even as we start to load up more and more things so in day to day use i'm not sure you'd really notice a difference but at the same time with the prices equal the s20 fe is the better processor however you may notice that with ram management the s20 with just six gigs does fall short compared to the pixel's

8 gigs this is something that surprised me actually and i'm not sure if it strictly has to do with the less ram or maybe the pixel 5 and android 11 offering better app management but more often than not the pixel 5 is able to launch apps that have stayed running in the background while the fe tends to need to reload some previously launched apps to me that is important and i'd rather have the apps stay current and pre-loaded

Versus gaining a second in launch times and unfortunately i don't have an 8 gig model of the fe to test so maybe it evens out a bit but this is something i at least wanted to explain either way you go though i don't necessarily think performance is as big of a deciding factor as people made it out to be both phones are plenty capable but objectively of course the s20 fe does have a better processor for the same price as the pixel when it comes to battery capacity and longevity there is

Also a difference here too the pixel 5 packs of 4080 milliamp battery while the fe has a 4500 milliamp battery but i actually haven't found that difference to be too drastic because the fe is running at 120 hertz it's gonna be more of a battery hog versus the 90 hertz mode on the pixel and the fe also has the bigger display of course which will require more power furthermore the s20 fe for whatever reason ships with samsung's smaller older power brick even though this phone supports up to 25

Watt fast charging the pixel 5 ships with an 18 watt brick but doesn't support anything faster than that with charging so i guess with all of that stuff being considered it's sort of a draw but plenty worth thinking about there finally when it comes to the cameras we're really dealing with a bunch of differences here too first off with the hardware the pixel 5 offers a dual camera setup with a 12.2 megapixel main lens which we've seen on previous pixel devices along with a new 16 megapixel ultrawide

Lens on the s20 fe around back its triple lens setup consists of a 12 megapixel main shooter 8 megapixel telephoto lens and a 12 megapixel ultrawide and up front the pixel 5's selfie camera is the same 8 megapixel lens we've had for a while while the s20 fes is a 32 megapixel shooter now specs are not everything of course megapixels don't really tell the whole story and

When it comes to capabilities and shooting modes there are some more important differences worth mentioning first off the telephoto lens on the s20 fe obviously allows this phone to offer up to three times optical zoom and up to 30 times digital zoom neither of which the pixel 5 even comes close to since it lacks the telephoto lens entirely and with a wide angle technically the pixel 5 maxes out at about 107 degrees of view while the fe goes a bit wider at about 123 degrees

Now both phones can do all the important stuff like shoot 4k video at up to 60 frames per second they obviously offer night mode with all the different camera lenses including the selfie lens and there are plenty of additional features and functions and shooting modes with each phone individually offering its own unique set of features but i think the s20 fe does offer a bit more though whether you get much use out of some of those filters and shooting modes is really going to be up to you to

Decide the important thing to think about though is that in practice i personally still found that the pixel 5 is the better all-around shooter both with the rear lens setup and especially with selfies to me the pixel retains a lot more detail and offers a more natural realistic looking shot while samsung continues to boost up the color and saturation to give a more pleasing but less honest view of the scene and i will have a dedicated camera

Comparison video up here shortly with these phones to really see the differences but i still think that if camera capabilities are really important to you there's no doubt that the pixel still reigns supreme so all in all i actually do think this is a really competitive comparison with both phones offering some really unique things the s20 fe is easily one of the best all-around value smartphones right now and in a way it's essentially a flagship s20 with very few compromises however

The pixel 5 still offers a lot with google's own software experience and the best camera setup overall though that processor still does fall short but what do you guys think which phone would you prefer let me know in the comments down below i'd love to know your thoughts of course hopefully you guys did enjoy this video though be sure to follow tech daily on twitter and subscribe to the tech daily youtube channel if you haven't already and i'll see you guys later
