Goodbye, Jailbreaking
hey guys what is going on my name is jen and in this video i'm going to be talking about why i stopped jailbreaking my iphone now if you're a long time subscriber here on the channel you know that i used to do a lot of jailbreaking content and basically what jailbreaking is is removing a piece of your iphone's software so that it allows you to install your own software essentially allowing you to customize your phone in however many ways you want if you've ever seen an android phone you
Would know that there's a lot more customization there than there is on an iphone sounds pretty cool right yes but i'm also no longer doing that anymore and i never really explained why so if you're thinking about jailbreaking your iphone or if you have a jailbroken device you may be a little concerned why i'm no longer making jailbreak tutorials or um tweak guides see as a youtuber or as an influencer i'm not really a huge fan of that term but as somebody who has influence
Over what you do on your device i also have the responsibility of what happens to your device if you follow like a tutorial or a guide or something like that it is never my intention to mislead you or install stuff on your phone that's potentially hazardous or it could break it or compromise your information see when i first started jailbreaking i had the ipod touch fourth generation i believe and back then i think the current ios
Version was ios 5 or ios 6. for reference we're coming up on ios 14 right now wow i kind of feel old see those were the days where most iphone users yes the iphone offered a very awesome value just because it was a new smartphone at the time but it was also not offering some of what the competition was at the time with android and the level of customizability that you get so like if you wanted to turn wi-fi off on your phone you had to
Scroll through your home screen and find the settings and then and then dig through there and click on the wi-fi and then click off you know you didn't have a quick way to do it siri sucked back then what am i talking about sorry still sucks and when people would jailbreak their phones you get this application called cydia on your home screen cydia is basically like a like a third-party app store where instead of downloading apps you're downloading the modifications to install
Onto your device now jailbreaking can be split up into three primary eras is one the beginning of jailbreaking this is like back when um the iphone 3gs was the flagship model um and then they first discovered that you can jailbreak that phone forever that was like that was like the intro to jailbreaking that's where it got really popular and everybody wanted to do it then the second area would be the golden age of jailbreaking and this would be
Like the ios 6 the ios 9 era kind of like that iphone 5s to iphone 6s era where jailbreaking was really easy it was not complicated and there were very little risks involved and then we have the current era or the third like segment of jailbreaking and that's what we're living in right now we're jailbreaking it's still possible you can still do it but it's no longer the one-click solution that it used to be now there was a there was a breaking
Point here on the channel you guys might have noticed that was during the ios 10 jailbreak season it was also at this time where some primary jailbreak developers just kind of dropped off the map we never heard of them again like taiji is gone pangu is gone um but those were all prominent jailbreak developers back in the day and the ios 10 jailbreak cycle now when i say jailbreak cycle it just means that every year we get a new ios come out like the upcoming ios 14 or last year's
Ios 13. every year when we get that new major like number upgrade for iphone software there's like a whole different thing when it comes to jailbreaking because some years you might not even get a good jailbreak other years you get a really good one and that's just what i call the yearly jailbreak cycle and when the ios 10 or iphone 7 jailbreak cycle rolled around it was kind of really strange because it was very unconventional it was made by a developer we never heard of at that
Point you might remember him his name is luca tedesco i believe and he did something very unconventional in the world of jailbreaking you see normally if you jailbreak your phone once it's jailbroken you can't really go back the only way to remove a jailbreak would be to plug your device into your computer and restore it which means it erases everything unless you have some sort of backup that has your information on it luca de desco built in this back door into the jailbreak where in case of emergency
You can tell the device to unjailbreak itself you still need a computer to do it but you can do it without losing your information you didn't have to restore your phone you didn't have to completely wipe it and building that function into the jailbreak itself was never done before which is actually kind of funny because the ios 10 jailbreak while it was great it started falling apart like most jailbreaks do they fall apart after a few months of using it if you jailbreak your device and you
Install a bunch of customizations over time that code is going to degrade without constant software updates and because of the nature of jailbreaking apps and programs just don't tend to reset like they normally would at least in my experience when i jailbreak a device no matter how stable the jailbreak is or no matter how few tweaks i installed after a couple of months it always tends to act up it always requires me to restore my phone and re-jailbreak if i want the same level of stability
I don't know what that is but it's just it was not that great see during that jailbreak cycle there were a ton of issues with how the jailbreak was conducted this could be anything from cydia crashing or tweaks causing safe mode respringing randomly you're stuck in a non-jailbroken state and the yanghu app isn't working and this video that i made solving solving those issues were just temporary fixes because those are temporary problems
They will always come back after a while and as i was looking on my channel for videos that were doing well or things that i should keep doing evaluating kind of the videos out i was making at the time i was seeing that the the tutorial to fix your jailbreak got more attention than the jailbreak itself which was which was kind of mind-boggling that was the turning point where i realized making videos about this stuff
Really wasn't that helpful and that just added on top of the issues i was having with my jailbreak off screen i mean it was it was enough to make me say no to future jailbreaks so if you're one of those who are wondering where my jailbreak content is where did it go did it just disappear that is for a reason because it is not helpful your phone is worse off in the long run even though you're trading off those features plus it's not like apple
Has been completely deaf to jailbreakers requests they added in the control center remember that was the sb settings tweak way back in the day full screen siri that's also another one wow there's a lot actually dark mode widgets notification center on the home screen power mode battery management tap to weight raised to weight customizable control center that was a big one for a while i'm running out of fingers here switch camera settings in the camera app although
It's only on the iphone 11 at this point but 3d touch on non-supported devices and a bunch of other stuff that a lot of users have been asking for like fast charging and wireless charging and all on all the stuff all the technical stuff they've slowly been adding it to their iphones where honestly i can hardly complain about my phone anymore i can't say it doesn't do what i wanted to do because that's what the jailbreak was supposed to help me do
Back in the day and it did there were things you can do with the jailbreak that you simply could not with the iphone and today that is still true but is no longer such a monumental gap between these two things it used to be your iphone was a certain way and you can change it with a jailbreak and have a lot of gain in the middle you can do a lot of things you normally wouldn't be able to but as apple has slowly pushed that boundary closer and closer to jailbreaking there's less and less of a need to do so
And i'm not saying jailbreaking is bad or that you shouldn't do it but i can't justify me doing it if you know what i mean and another reason would just be that i see the top youtubers who focus on jailbreaking or at least used to focus on jailbreaking no longer focus on jailbreaking or have ended up at a place where their channel is boring their channel is stagnant and it's the same topic over and over and over and over and as i mentioned in my channel update video
That is exactly the kind of thing that made me like burn out on youtube it just i couldn't keep making the same thing over and over again and you got to realize if you jailbreak your phone you're giving up a lot of security for those features there's there's a trade-off so if you manage emails on your phone or your your bank accounts or credit cards whatever kind of it kind of leaves the doors open for something bad to happen generally they don't
Generally they're safe but not always there's a reason why banking apps will shut down if you jailbreak your device ever heard of open ssh yeah that stuff is scary i hope that made sense i hope i didn't confuse you too much i know this was a bit of a different video but hey you know what i like talking to you guys you guys are great i really should do these more oh and also i think i might want to start vlogging again on the channel just because um it's very interesting and fun for me
To make and we can talk about like a whole bunch of different topics that i normally wouldn't be able to do in here just on this table so if you guys would like to see that or if you have some questions for me um leave them in the comments i'll be happy to answer those some comments from the last video what is the oldest ipad to have the ios 13 i think that's the ipad air 2 or the ipad mini 4 they're kind of around the same era but those are really old ipads now and they still support the latest
Software which is mind-boggling to me proud owner of the ipad air 3 and logitech crayon dude that is a killer combo i mean saturn that it doesn't do pressure sensitivity but i can work with what i can until i can invest in the apple pencil and that ladies and gentlemen is what this is all about just doing what you can with what you got again let me know what topics or questions i can answer for you um that would be great and i will see you in the next one oh wait new title screen
