Fox’s Sports NFL Game-Day Super Bowl Production | An Inside Look

by birtanpublished on February 10, 2021

Folks it is game day how's the cliche go everything everybody's been doing for the last couple of weeks has been leading right up to this here's what it's like to produce a Super Bowl the players are here the fans are definitely here and Fox Sports has moved their entire operation from South Beach to the stadium so they're here to make sure that anybody else who can't actually be here feels like they're here for Super Bowl 50 for the fans are in the live fan Center right now where the pregame show is going to be going on for the next hour or an hour and a half and I got to tell you the vibe here is super electric

Basically controlled chaos whereas before was pretty calm we're seeing a lot of activity from the crews here pumping up the crowd making sure that they're gonna get every single shot meanwhile back at the broadcast trucks are making sure that all of it gets delivered in beautiful 4k HDR all across the nation what's really interesting amid all this energy the on-air talent is super loose they are having a ton of fun with the crowd here and I anticipate that's just going to keep on happening welcome to Hard Rock Stadium through the magic of television we have moved inside

As has the Fox sports broadcast crew we're about an hour and a half away from the kickoff and the energy continues to intensify here in the stadium I got to tell you the sports talent on the stage right now has very little time to get in here they ripped right in here they jumped on the stage got their makeup and clothes fixed up and they're about to hit it for another hour and a half of pregame action meanwhile 1,500 other Fox Sports employees are moving around in a highly coordinated symfony effort to bring this amazing game to you DJ Khaled is pumping

The fans up and it's only gonna get more exciting from here with the game well underway we've made our way up to Fox's broadcast booth and I gotta tell you what we've seen before a lot of fun a lot of action in here it's more like business behind me here is actually the video wall that you see behind Joe Buck and Troy Aikman who are calling the game and providing color

Analysis respectively and flanking those two gentlemen is a whole host of folks feeding them stats in real time it's a real whirlwind and very much a critical portion of this broadcast the game is signed and we are now at half time and while most folks are at home watching the halftime show that Fox Sports has popped back up there's an absolutely massive team that is assembling the halftime show stage and audio system I boss counted something like 50 stuff Wofford clusters all the savings coming out we just saw the drums roll onto the field and what's interesting about this

Is that a completely different crew is handling the halftime show that includes the audio and the video production as well I was told that this halftime crew is working with us so they're going to be able to teach Fox to the signal and they're going to manage it in 4k HDR as they send it out to all their broadcast and streaming partners so even though that crew is not shooting anything in HDR it is going to be converted HDR for delivery outs and it should look and sound amazing yep that's about enough of that you're gonna have to watch the broadcast show

To see the halftime show but now we're back into the game and behind me right now everybody's gotten real busy inside the broadcast truck getting this show put back together meanwhile in other parts of the compound they're already getting ready for the postgame show until then their backup in case something goes wrong but nothing is going to go wrong because these guys have this whole thing dialed in Pro the reason that we're here to tell this story behind the scenes with Fox is to take a look at what they are doing to produce the Super Bowl in 1080p HD are

Up scaled to 4k for deployment this year it's a big big step for such a huge production but we're also here to take a look at what the future of broadcast technology might be and that's why I was excited to see Sony was here showing off their 8k television of course it's much more than just the 8k TV so fans of our TV reviews know that this is the z9g that was introduced earlier last year it's an 8k TV we have the 85 inch size right here that we've taken a look all year but what we're seeing on the TV screen is what is really remarkable sony has developed a new 8k camera it's a

Three chip CMOS sensor that offers remarkable depth of field and it can capture an immense amount of the stadium all at once but what's really special about this camera delivering in the native 8k signal to this TV is that you can zoom in this is on the third floor now what you're seeing right here you can zoom in to the finest blade of grass on the field as you can see here and to me that is just absolutely remarkable that you can get that level of detail now this is a camera that Fox is using on a trial but what sony is trying to do here

Is first provide the display so that you can see what their production equipment can do and then bring the production equipment into the equation to show what Fox could be doing in the future and ultimately what's going to be coming into our homes the other thing about this camera that's remarkable is that it has a really special Canon lens on it that's capturing a gorgeous color so it can it can deliver great SDR pictures if it wanted to but the idea here is that can deliver amazing HDR super wide color gamut all in a que this is what the future of sports could look like to the

End the confetti has flown but it wasn't without a bit of a battle tech featured heavily in this game mostly because several of the 100-plus cameras in this stadium came together in order to review certain plays and of course this is not the end for Fox Sports they've gotta keep on truckin with the postgame show but if you take a look at how things went I think it went pretty well foxsports managed to deliver a very smooth 4k HDR production I didn't hear from a few different folks that there were some trouble with some absolute dropouts but that's on the back end of

The chain at the end this is not reflective technology but everything I thought looked really excellent very smooth my technical team the crew the production crew they get all the credit it's a it's a huge team effort of well well over a thousand people and it's everybody's Super Bowl and they all came together and everybody did their job we had a great day
