Dell Latitude 7220 Rugged Extreme Tablet Review

by birtanpublished on November 22, 2020

This is Lisa from mobile tech review and now for something a little bit different this is a Dell Latitude but not just any Dell Latitude this is the Dell Latitude 72 20 rugged extreme tablets so take a look at this you might think that only companies like Panasonic Toughbook our symbol make these kind of things but they'll actually does too clearly this is not a thin and light tablet for consumers but for some of you this is gonna be fun educational different and for those who do work in various vertical markets oil and gas industry the military any number of things it could actually be interesting look at it

Now so clearly this thing is very beefy it's 11.6 inch tablets I'll call it 12 inches it's got a quad core CPU inside unless you go with the core i3 which is a dual core these are ultrabook CPUs you've got two removable batteries on the back swap them out in the field that's pretty darn nice a thousand in that's what Intel claims display we'll talk about how well it actually does there so it's meant for outdoor use you can still see it it's matte and even has a polarizer so yeah that's pretty interesting stuff of course you might want a keyboard so enter this incredibly

Rugged look at this thing you can actually probably hurt somebody with this if you have to do self-defense yourself well this here is the 350 dollar rugged keyboard accessory and it mounts magnetically just like it would with a surface tablet or any of Dell's more consumer-oriented tablets this thing is pretty darn heavy the tablet itself weighs about three pounds believe me this one weighs about another two or so they don't have the speck on it but I can tell you it's pretty heavy you put it together it's not the lightest thing but the idea is that it is milspec rated

For a variety of things including drops from four feet for dust humidity shock vibration is its ip65 rated for water and for dust so that means splashing water that sort of thing is fine now it's submerging it in water and going swimming and besides that there's an even more expensive model it starts about 3500 that's the 72 20x model and now one is even more rugged it's supposed to have armored casing on it and it's explosion-proof so if you're an explosive environment you can use it safely which is a rating we've seen on these

Even some ThinkPads because folks do sometimes work in the oil and gas industry where that's an issue this runs Windows 10 on Intel eighth generation youth series processors with V Pro that's why we're still an eighth trend because we don't have V Pro for tenth gen yet Core i3 Core i5 core i7 or available we have the core i7 in our model and you can get with eight or 16 gigs of ddr3 low-power RAM and it has an m2 nvme SSD anywhere from 128 gigs all the way up to a terabyte depending on what you want to spend money for it has Intel Wi-Fi 6 onboard a X 200 so that's

A bit more modern than you might have guessed from the cpu chipset onboard performance is just fine though you know honestly the jump between 8th and 10th gen ice-like isn't so super huge it's a little bit more about power savings here but this has plenty of battery capacity not so much of an issue and the swap old batteries as well the display is full HD resolution and an 11 point 6 inches that's perfectly fine this is not for photoshop jockeys obviously this is a very specialized counter product it has an anti-glare surface it looks kind of grainy I think part of that is probably

The waterproofing they've done to it more than just the anti glare now they say a thousand nits of brightness we've measured 887 this which is still really darn crazy bright and again it has a polarizer on the screen anti glare all this sort of stuff in terms of color gamut and the whole rest is pretty much your full srgb color spectrum coverage on there contrast is pretty good it has the weirdest white balance Kelvin number I've ever seen but again it's not an infographic artist this so that's fine and the color accuracy graph is off the charts bad but when you look at it it

Actually doesn't look that way I think it's a function of the display being driven as such high brightness so the display on this supports touch it is a tablet after all and also a pen now Dell included their so-called rugged pen which doesn't look much different from the usual pen and this is an intrigue active digitizer so for those who even need to fill out forms on the road do diagramming all that sort of thing that's what that's for again not a fine art product obviously like a lot of business products in vertical market products yes

4G LTE is available as a Snapdragon X 20 modem for those in who need connectivity anywhere that you are the keyboard by the way has very bright white backlighting and the key travel is very good this feels like a regular laptop keyboard not like you're making any compromises with some flimsy tablet II kind of keyboard the one drawback is the trackpad it's not Microsoft precision but I don't think this is the reason why I think it's the ruggedized kind of waterproofing nature of it is that Denis indeed you really have to press hard with your finger if

You use a usual kind of light touch that you might use on a track that it's often fails to register consistently you have to press hard kind of annoying the ports on this are on the side and they are covered to prevent water intrusion you can get a charger that's either barrel pin or USB see that's your choice 45 watt optionally if you want a 90 watt charger Dell doesn't charge more for that if you're in hurry to get a charge quickly you have USB C on here and you have USB 8 3.1 you've got a micro SD card slot and an rs-232 port yes I know a lot of you will laugh at that but

Again think of this the industry this is meant for where they actually plug into the devices that they have to maintain and they communicate over rs-232 serial cameras are a little bit more important when you're using this in the field in a vertical market situation you have an 8 megapixel rear camera which isn't bad and a 5 megapixel front facing camera as well and there's a little privacy slider switch for that as well so have a battery life which is a little bit less of a concern when you can swap new batteries in and out it has two 34 watt power modules you can just put one and

If you want you can put both in that's a lot of battery power for something that's essentially in ultrabooks so as you might imagine in full HD resolution power consumption is not too high uh-huh it depends on how high you drive that brightness though and you have something that goes to 887 it's according to our colorimeters measurements you can impact battery life pretty strongly so if you're using an outdoor is bringing a couple of spare batteries by using it indoors I have to say that this thing has been going for like 14 hours straight and you've got almost 70 watt

Hours of power here so that certainly makes sense and just because there's a rugged tablet doesn't mean you can't accessorize beyond the keyboard so on the back there's actually a screw on stand right here if you want to have a stand to prop the thing up there's a rugged dock that's available there's a handle so you can carry it by handle that attaches to the top so there are a variety of things that you can actually add on to this and yes because it is meant for businesses to purchase and again industries where things have to be serviced in the field you can

Actually open this up to service it and you've got the m2 which is a socketed SSD if you wish to do upgrades on it it makes it for mobile tech review be sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel for more cool tech videos and hit that notification bell
