Can YOU Use the Cheapest Dell XPS 15 9500 (2020) for Premiere Pro Video Editing?!

by birtanpublished on November 26, 2020

The Dell XPS is a fantastic machine that we've already been talking about for the last week or so but what I'd like to do today is can this be your only premier Pro video editing platform let's find out what's up everyone on everyday dad and if I can figure it out you can figure it out so this video is an absolute like update to the last video we did about the XPS 15 for a video editing rig now in that video we used a program called DaVinci Resolve which is a video editor that's in two parts so the first part is a free version that is what we used and then there's a paid version that you can use if you're doing

Like real pro level stuff well DaVinci Resolve is a very GPU intensive editing system whereas since this is the base model it doesn't have a GPU so while I stand by that video because resolve is free and so a lot of people will gravitate towards it I also want to put this through Premiere Pro as a task because that's a more CPU intensive editor and this has a pretty good CPU inside of it now you might be saying to yourself every day dad will you upgraded it to 64 gigabytes of RAM and like a lightning fast SSD so of course it's going to be better right for this video

I took that stuff out just to make this is the base model the cheapest one you can get to prove that here's the m2 drive and here is the 64 gigabytes of RAM and I will keep those right here so that the magic of editing doesn't like trick them into this computer so let's get into it and again I've started this isn't a surprise any more I'm starting to be like a responsible youtuber and I'm getting everything prepared and prepped ahead of time so we will crack this device open wow it's really that was really loud so something else we're going to do to make this more fair as I

Will be recording the screen externally cue an atom as a ninja 5 so we don't have to take a processing power recording on here so let's record as a Final Cut Pro user premiere works a little bit different but I've been trying to teach myself this for the last week or so so hopefully we will not be embarrassing ourselves too bad today on camera in front of all of you wonderful people import media now there are some things about premiere that just make a whole lot more sense compared to da Vinci or compared to Final Cut Pro X oh yeah those things are not there anymore

Right right right right okay so we'll do a quick like will edit the intro for the unboxing of the XPS 15 and we'll see how that goes so importing files like you can see that worked really quickly um let's see here so let's check out the scrubbing so we'll move this over to the just you just you buddy okay let's expand this a little bit and see that's what I'm talking about like this is scrubbing so much better than here can you hear the playbacks a little rough we've got it set to one quarter I think we can go down to one eighth and that's one of the benefits of premiere /

Resolve is you can set the preview of either full playback like so this is a 4k clip we could view it in 4k but this is not powerful enough of a machine to see that half or an eighth so let's set it down to a two see how the playback works okay looks pretty good again we're seeing the scrubbing I'm not seeing any issues with the scrubbing let's see that playback we're in 1/8 but it's really doable as premiere is a more CPU intensive editing program I would expect so here's something that I really like about premiere and I kinda wish in Final Cut

Also but check this out this is the best part case we're gonna highlight all these and we're going to synchronize based on the audio so what's that what that's going to do is instead of how like having to manually place everything in all three clips all three tracks are now synchronized that's awesome that's one of my that's probably my favorite feature about premiere and another thing I like is just the customization like you can really customize your workspace here you can customize your workspace however you

Want it you can customize like every key functionality cuz I have this setup right now to very closely mirror what my keyboard setup and all that is for Final Cut Pro so it's really is really nice so let's we bring you guys down a little bit I don't need this I don't need to see the playback as much as I kind of need to see what's going on with these clips as we're going on because this is going to be I do I like having multicam aspect to these videos so there we go so let's turn these off Dell has the dell XPS line and so I'm not seeing

Really any stutters this is this is acting much more smoothly than resolve did the Dell XPS line has been refreshed with their new 15-inch model it has and we've been talking about it for a while now what comes in the box and is it any good let's find out so we will cut that we'll do a so yeah we'll just do this intro we'll do a couple minutes and then we'll see how the render works because there's two parts of video editing there's the cutting that we're doing right now and then there's the rendering like how long does it take the integrated graphics how long does it

Take the CPU to actually turn this into a video that you could upload or that you could share to somebody that's it you know that's a pretty important part let's go over here effects scale there's a keyframe for another keyframe so that should be done accident is it any good let's find out then it's always funnier to cut like when you're in the middle of saying something cut this out ripple delete we will add a effect video transitions slide push right about there we will expand this a little bit and something I want you to notice is just like how well this is working I'm not

Seeing really any slowdowns I'm not seeing any studies we're having really good playback because we are at 1/8 but you have that option to get this kind of functionality okay so we've got yes look we just proved it you can use this to be your video editing computer let's go over to 5 minutes so we'll take this as what we'll do two minutes so let's go over to two minutes cut so this is three layers a 4k video will activate these two so this is this is a pretty intensive like if you're making YouTube videos they're shooting in 4k this is pretty

Representative of what you would get so we've got a two-minute clip let's export this and see how long it takes we will use the preset of YouTube's 4k because I prefer uploading to YouTube in 4k so that means it set everything else up for me so it's I haven't set to hardware encoding we don't have an NVIDIA GPU inside of it to take advantage of the new int vank encoding system so it's not I have it set there but I don't know that it's gonna help us too much so let's okay let's get our timer ready to go so come over here you can't see

But it says export export start ten minutes nine minutes four minutes okay let's bring that over here it says it's gonna be three minutes and 30 seconds so that's a little bit that's what like so we're kind of like four minutes right so this one like two times real time which is about the performance that I get out of a MacBook Pro 13 so this is pretty this seems pretty reasonable for a base-model device however through the magic of video editing that I'm doing later you don't have to sit through all this I'll sit through all this so you don't have to okay we are at four

Seconds three two when it says 100 so it took us three minutes and 24 seconds to render that two-minute clip I am very impressed and I think Premiere Pro is the better option when you do a computer like this that does not have as beefy of a GPU and you can see we still have the 64 gigabytes of RAM and the superfast solid-state drive outside of this thing so those times would be way faster if we did use those so to answer the question yes you can use the base model Dell XPS 15 9500 as your only premier Pro editing machine I'm super impressed I mean I knew this was going to work because I've

Been using this to edit these videos on the channel for the last week and I again I'm very impressed normally if you're like a youtuber like me you do between 10 12 maybe 15 minute videos so it would take what between 20 and 30 minutes to render and that's not a terrible time like that is a totally doable time especially in a machine like this and heck you know what if you like this video I bet you'd like the video where I talk about my impressions after one week of solid use a few videos under the belt some serious use out of this machine and you can find that video by
