Child Emu With a Damaged Leg | The Unimaginable Dr. Pol

published on July 2, 2020

BARBARA HEENEY: Her name is
Martha, and she's an emu

JAN POL: Oh, shoot

She means the world to me

It's OK

JAN POL: This one got broke

It definitely was a broken leg

And this tendon is not out

BARBARA HEENEY: She can't
get around like that

She's not going to
be able to live

I'm going to see what
we can do I've never

done this on an emu before

And I hope it works

This is one of my things

If you've never
tried, you'd never

know if it's going to work

MAN: There you go

BARBARA HEENEY:
You're the only person

I knew that could do this

JAN POL: You have to
immobilize the joint

above and below a fracture

I want her over on that side

[emu screeching]

Yeah, hear that?

MAN: I heard something pop

JAN POL: When the fracture
is lined up properly,

pull the leg, lift
it up a little bit,

tape it to the body, and
then give it time to heal up

MAN: One more time

In seconds, he fixed her

JAN POL: OK

BARBARA HEENEY:
She stopped crying

There's no more, like, pain

JAN POL: Put her back in
because she can't walk

Martha has to be in a cage where
she can more or less sit and be

as quiet as possible
so that, you know,

the leg has a chance to heal

See what happens in a few days

If she starts
walking on it, fine

If it is going back again,
tape it up for another week

OK
BARBARA HEENEY: Thank you

Oh, you're very welcome

Watch my blood

The best, really the best

MAN: It's going to
take some time–

JAN POL: OK, we'll see you

MAN: –to see if Martha
regains full use of her leg

[music playing]
